Yahoo IMAP server - Rejected Password

Why do i keep getting the following on my imac 27" when it does not happen on my ipad or macbook air?

"The Yahoo! IMAP server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user "

Getting very frustrated with it. I have tried removing the account and repacing and also changing the password. It is not the password entry that is the problem. Any solutions? All software up to date.

Not to get to far off topic but when one makes statements of facts that are completely false - Radbasa's "troll-scent" and "You can't be serious" - statements are only reinforced.

Pages and Numbers are watered down versions of Word and Excel.

Pages is a Page Layout program

Word is a word processing program

Two completely different things.

Pages is a simplistic version of Quark - but then Quark is $850 so one would not ever consider comparing the two on equal ground.

the ipad will be deemed obsolete after Windows 8 is released. There will be no tablet market anymore.

Interesting that the maker of Windows 8 is only just coming to market with yet another market attempt at a new tablet in late 2012 or 2013 then - yet this very thing - W8 - will dissolve the entire tablet market for all eternity? 😁

People will just have tablet computers and not need two products.

Maybe this actually meant to say that desktop computers will be obsolete then? A 12 core tablet with a 30" screen would be a bit heavy - and the batteries - oh my!

BACK ON TOPIC

It's Yahoo's problem, and for a company that's already behind in the market - the last thing they need to do is lose their customer base. But sadly, after 15 years of Yahoo email I've started gradually moving my primary mail web based email account to Gmail instead. And Google also adds a ton of value in the free Google Docs - where one can get (watered down) cloud versions of Word, Excel (and more) that do all the basics most people need - for absolutely FREE!

@igirl1 -

If Pages and Word were considered so different, the there wouldn't be so many comparisions between the two. Furthermore, if you go to Apple's own description of Pages, they call it a "streamlined word processor and an easy-to-use page layout tool." Apple converts between the two for a reason. In fact, it's rather obvious that Apple basically copied many of the functions straight from Word. I don't think that you have an agrugement there. Pages is just an inferior product.

As far as W8 and the tablet discussion, it's not about Surface at all, it's about the fact that if you look at the next step in the evolution of computing, you see that a hybrid market is about to be created. That's why Microsoft created Windows 8 the way that they did (as a touch screen interface). That's why basically every manufacturer is about to make all their ultabooks touchscreens and convertible. What's the need for a "tablet" when you have a computer that is about the same size with far more power with no compromise? It's what tablet people have been trying to do for the last two years, but are not able to because of the limited power of tablets. That's why nobody owns "only" a tablet. I believe that this is about to change with the next generation of touchscreen ultrabooks. Who will need a tablet with limited function when you can just flip around your ultrabook and use it as a tablet when you feel like it?

As far as the two computer comment, I was talking about laptops and tablets, not desktops and tablets.

Yeah, I was having this same problem with Outlook for Windows and Mac. It seems that two devices can't be signed in at once, so the problem has been gone for a week after I turned off push for Yahoo! Mail on my iPhone and iPad. Yahoo! was just trying to make their server more secure, they had good intentions and you can't really blame them, but this not Apple's fault at all. End of discussion. The solution is to turn off push and use pull, which Apple calls fetch, on your Yahoo! mail account on all your devices. Keep in mind that we aren't even technically allowed to use their IMAP mail on desktop clients, they aren't trying to accommodate us.

I have a vista, iMac and iPad all with access to my yahoo mail and all are on most of the time. The only time I have a problem is when I have my iPad connected to an unsecured network and try to use the Mail program on the iPad and try to do anything but get mail. If I send or delete mail while connected to an unsecured network the iPad starts trying to do something it can't complete and the defaults to saying Yahoo requires my password and the beat goes on. So now when I connect to an unsecured network I only use Yahoo webmail and have not had the problem in 6 weeks.

I tried a shortened password - down to 6 characters - and it immediately failed, with the same problem.

My phone, MacBook and iPad had not even had the new password changed as of yet and not used or tried to access Yahoo email - it didn't matter - the shorter password made no difference on my iMac (Lion).

Another solution (short of switching to Thunderbird) is to delete the Yahoo email account from Apple Mail - and then install Yahoo Messenger to run/login on startup. This is how I used to get Yahoo emails for years. No consolidated email box - but it works and the relentless annoyance is gone.

This imap password loop with yahoo and Apple Mail on my Macbook Pro just started for me in July, about a week ago. It is the only device from which I regularly download my sbcglobal.net mail.

I just got off the phone with 2nd level ATT support and he reconfigured my account in Apple Mail (and did not charge me). My mac was defaulting to imap.mail.yahoo.com because of something it found at att when it checked servers, based on my sbcglobal domain. The tech support person said "We don't support imap." Later he said only in special cases. It took 3 account creation attempts before Apple Mail put up an option for POP.

Below I included what he used for POP and everything is working. (I don't need imap, fortunately. Maybe AT&T has been in a process of slowly prohibiting imap for everything, unless you have "Plus Yahoo", geared toward phones. My guess is that my account just came under that umbrella, as I have been successfully seeing my Yahoo spam folder in Apple Mail for some time now. I'll miss that, but at least I won't be driven crazy by password rejects.)

POP account:

inbound.att.net (used to be imap.mail.yahoo.com) Default port 995.

outbound.att.net (used to be smtp.mail.yahoo.com)

Again, you might need to re-create the account multiple times before your Mac stops defaulting to imap. (Changing it to pop from imap after the fact does not work.)

I hope this helps other "victims" of AT&T's disorganization. As many of us know, that company has deep-rooted, severe problems. Tier 1 tech support said tier 2 would charge me to deal with Apple Mail, thus my search in the communities for a solution before calling again.

Hi there.

I had the same rejected password issue for a couple off weeks now. I call AT&T techsupport (my email address @att.net, but serviced by yahoo). I called Yahoo tech support yesterday, and off course I got a rep in India, who try to tell me that my mac was hacked and that it has the infamous KOOBFACE worm, and that is why I got the password rejected message, not only that, but the also proceeded to tell me that they could fixed the problem for just $330. How about that?. I decline the Yahoo's tech support generous offer and drove to the nearest apple store, where they checked on my mac, and it jsut happen to be worm free, and not wahcked. Needless to say I am still having the password rejected issue.

Before I called Yahoo, I called AT&T email support and were useless to say the least, and also wanted to charge money to see if they coild fix the problem.
