Yahoo IMAP server - Rejected Password

Why do i keep getting the following on my imac 27" when it does not happen on my ipad or macbook air?

"The Yahoo! IMAP server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user "

Getting very frustrated with it. I have tried removing the account and repacing and also changing the password. It is not the password entry that is the problem. Any solutions? All software up to date.

Hi,

I have been having the same problem i.e. rerjected password from Yahoo.mail. Went through Apple Care (Very Helpful) but ended up delaing with my ISP BTYahoo. They said that it is a Yahoo problem and has been caused by a migration issue that yahoo are currently working on. They suggested that until it is fixed that I use web mail instead of Mac mail. Estimated time for the fix a couple of days. Dont forget to close Mac Mail.

Hope this helps.

Ken.

Hi, I am new to this thread but not the problem! I have been getting the 'asking for the password' problem on my phone for a while and started to get it on my PB. I read the discussion about trashing the old account and making a new one and I can't get the new one to get my mail either.

I have tried POP and IMAP and I have tried pop.att.yahoo.com, postoffice.pacbell.net etc and I just can't get Apple Mail to get my mail. I don't get asked for a PW now, I just get the little cursor of death spinning until it gives up.

Please help!

ok this was happening to me so I found this thread... and tried everything except deleting the account and adding it back again that would have been a last ditch option as I have over 3000 emails! yet I think I have managed to fix this;

Basically I upgraded from Yahoo Classic (albeit begrudgingly) to the horrible new PURPLE interface (at least I have adblock so no annoying ads!) then went into the KEYCHAIN ACCESS app and deleted BOTH the IMAP and the STMP keychains for Yahoo (not the web-based one) - then when the window came up again, I put in my password and clicked the "save in my keychain" box and now it hasnt come back..... (yet).

Good luck everyone.

I had success with user spacecruiser's suggestion earlier in the thread:

This imap password loop with yahoo and Apple Mail on my Macbook Pro just started for me in July, about a week ago. It is the only device from which I regularly download my sbcglobal.net mail.

I just got off the phone with 2nd level ATT support and he reconfigured my account in Apple Mail (and did not charge me). My mac was defaulting to imap.mail.yahoo.com because of something it found at att when it checked servers, based on my sbcglobal domain. The tech support person said "We don't support imap." Later he said only in special cases. It took 3 account creation attempts before Apple Mail put up an option for POP.

Below I included what he used for POP and everything is working. (I don't need imap, fortunately. Maybe AT&T has been in a process of slowly prohibiting imap for everything, unless you have "Plus Yahoo", geared toward phones. My guess is that my account just came under that umbrella, as I have been successfully seeing my Yahoo spam folder in Apple Mail for some time now. I'll miss that, but at least I won't be driven crazy by password rejects.)

POP account:

inbound.att.net (used to be imap.mail.yahoo.com) Default port 995.

outbound.att.net (used to be smtp.mail.yahoo.com)

Again, you might need to re-create the account multiple times before your Mac stops defaulting to imap. (Changing it to pop from imap after the fact does not work.)

I hope this helps other "victims" of AT&T's disorganization. As many of us know, that company has deep-rooted, severe problems. Tier 1 tech support said tier 2 would charge me to deal with Apple Mail, thus my search in the communities for a solution before calling again.

I changed the offending account from IMAP to POP protocol - and it's working well since then.

I too have been having an awful time with endless "password is incorrect" messages. Tried most everything on this thread and elsewhere. Then I tried something on my own.

I logged into yahoo mail on the web. I switched from the "All-New Mail" back to Yahoo's "old email" and it did the trick! Haven't been able to get any email and now I've got email on my desktop again with NO password problems. At least for the last ten minutes and counting! 🙂

Change your password to 7 characters or less. That worked for me after spending nearly 14 hours working on it, including 3 hours on chat with ATT's "$20 a month for a year" service.

ATT changed their servers and the mail went out for a day or two. Then it wouldn 't log on.

What a pain in the ***.

Lucky someone posted that they had tried changing the password to the minimum number of characters and it worked instantly.

I started having the problem of not being able to access my Yahoo account on my MacBook not long after I let Yahoo update my online mail - but it didn't happen immediately.

Here's what worked for me. Go to your online yahoo mail account. Choose the little gear in the upper right corner and choose Mail Options. Scroll down to the bottom where you'll find Turn On SSL. That box was unchecked so I ticked it. Exited Yahoo Mail then went back into it just to make sure it still worked online. Good. Went back to Mac Mail on my MacBook and all was good in the world again. Didn't even get the annoying password request popup.

I can confirm that this works. After hours of wrestling with Yahoo through the online mail version as well as iOS and Mac OS applications I logged into the webmail version of Yahoo and selected "Turn on SSL." Once done I returned to OS Mail and recreated the account. It works (for now). I should also note here that the length of the password or capital letters in it apear to be a red herring - the one I'm using has upper/lowercase and is lengthy but works fine.

That all said, on a personal note I will say that Yahoo is assuredly the worst amongst all of the online mail providers in terms of their technology and integration with the Mac's OS. Dealing with GMail or any standard IMAP account in Mail is a cakewalk compared to slugging it out with Yahoo. I've already cancelled my account with them (too much spam and hacking) and am encouraging my spouse to do the same.

In short - Yahoo su*cks.

Just to add to the general overall confusion of OS X Mail (6.6) versus Yahoo! (either IMAP or POP) - I just spent yet another couple in a long line of hours spent on my iMac banging my head against configuring Mail in some way so as to receive Yahoo! mail. I decided to shorten the password to 18 bytes. After restarting the iMac to clear out whatever unehelpful statefulness might have been lurking, it now works with IMAP. Holy Crap! It worked the first time - IMAP and all.

The irony is now that it is working on this machine, why would I want to download the reams of crap which my 15+ year old Yahoo! account accumulates daily?

Dec 27, 2013 12:47 AM in response to Renesisdriver

It's a sign in verification issue with apps that don't support Yahoo!'s multi authentication system

  1. Log into Yahoo's website.
  2. Click on the gear thing in the top right.
  3. Choose "Account Info"
  4. Sign in (again)
  5. In the section titled "Sign-In and Security" click on "Manage your app passwords"
  6. Give it a name like "MacBook Air Laptop Mail" and then let it generate a unique app password.
