Yahoo IMAP server - Rejected Password

Why do i keep getting the following on my imac 27" when it does not happen on my ipad or macbook air?

"The Yahoo! IMAP server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user "

Getting very frustrated with it. I have tried removing the account and repacing and also changing the password. It is not the password entry that is the problem. Any solutions? All software up to date.

I didn't have to pay anything. Yahoo didn't provide any information indicating there would be any cost, and gmail certainly doesn't charge one. However, I did the whole procedure myself online and I don't know if there would be a charge for formal assistance?! I agree, I am pretty annoyed with Yahoo, and with Rogers for teaming up with a service provider that doesn't provide! But the alternative where I live is Bell, and they don't offer the bandwith/speed of internet access. It's pretty frustrating all round.

Well, I just bit the bullet and changed my e-mail service provider to liquidweb for everything relating to my business. This problem with Yahoo! has been ongoing for weeks and enough is enough! I have notified all of my 400+ contacts, and I will change my business letterhead and captions for all documents filed with the court and served on opposing counsel. I am going to be using iCloud for contacts, tasks and events to run the business. In terms of my personal account information for a plethora of different companies, well I'll have to change them one at a time as the need arises.

I've tried contacting Yahoo who are great at telling me what the possible solutions could be or causes of the problem but not realy providing a solutions even though I am a paying customer. As result I am using Zimbra mails free client to download all my mail from my Yahoo account and then I will be shutting the yahoo mail account down after telling them how bad the service they have provided.

If you can't read your mail on multiple devices without your account being locked then its useless for me,

Yahoo! has lots of computers. I'm sure there are many Yahoo! servers without problems. Unfortunately, my e-mail account was on one of the Yahoo! servers with problems -- this password rejection issue is not on the user end, but on the Yahoo! server side. The user settings have nothing to do with this problem. I have several Mac computers and iOS devices, and my settings are just fine.

This is a reply to everybody who is having problems with Yahoo imap mail rejecting their password continually.

I am not saying that this solution will work for you but it has workrd for me completely!!! I have not had to sign in again since I did it! when before I had to sign out and back in every 5 mins to get my emails!

Go into keychain access in utilities on your Mac and delete every thing that has yahoo in it. In my case there were many entries!!

I then had to sign in one more time and never again since!!! Try it! you have nothing to loose!

I have 3 Yahoo mail accounts all as sbcglobal.net from the early days before AT&T assumed SBC. The main account that is the first one I set up when I subscribed to DSL with SBC and that is the only account that has the password issue. I have tried many of the suggestions to keep from having password problems but the only thing that has worked for me is to remove the primary account from the mail.app on my iOS devices and then make a bookmark menu item in safari on iOS devices and only access my primary sbcglobal (yahoo) account with webmail. My other Yahoo accounts work flawlessly on the iOS devices. On my iMac and PC computers I can use the mail.app and windows live mail as pop or IMAP clients for all my Yahoo accounts without a problem. This solution will not sit well with those who need to hear the tone on their iOS device every time a new email arrives however it resolved the password problem for the past 9 months and it only affects 1 account.

I wish I had never used the Yahoo accounts for my main identity for many reasons. First and foremost is the ease of hacking a yahoo account. Next is the amount of spam I receive in these accounts make me believe Yahoo is giving my address to the spammers. If I do searches on yahoo for lobsters in a few days I start getting spam offering good deals on lobsters and I have not given the sources my email address. I sometimes get 30 to 40 spam a day on yahoo accounts and many from the same source although their address changes the format remains the same. For instance I have been getting 3 or more spam daily with 1938 as the send date for the past year. Although they all end up in my spam folder they need to be looked at and deleted. I also have 3 gmail and 2 live.com address that do not regularly get spam. I go for months without ever getting spam on my gmail accounts.

I have tired every angle possible and I still have an issue. I am starting to think it's a time out issue with the yahoo server and Mac Mail not waking it up when you sign in to check your mail. The reason I think this is because:-

1 - after coming down in the morning I get the none stop questioning for a password.

2 - I delete all yahoo passwords in keychain and start fresh only to find after closing down mac and restarting it I get the same issue

3 - I came across a quick solution by logging firstly into my yahoo account online, then went back into mac mail, all is fine. Well until I shut down my computer and have to do it again.

So this seems to be the solution I have come across. I will keep trying all suggestions possible but I think Yahoo need a serious bit of jiggery pokery on their servers.

It took me time to update here, but this is how long it took me to get yahoo to fix it. After at least 20 email exchanges with Yahoo, one of the tech support was usefull. He was the only one that did not send me a useless link to the Yahoo IMAP settings so that I verify my configuration, He aknowlegde that the problem was on their side the call it a sinchronisation problem between your account and the IMAP authentification server... whatever it means, the tech support agents informed me that he had fixed the problem, and that my account would work in 24hours.

The good news: Well yes after 24 hours, my account was not working, but after about 3 days, I could log back into the IMAP server.

The bad news: It lasted a couple of days and the problem started again,

The terrible news: Yahoo does not keep a log of problems, because I am starting to receive more of the useless link to the Yahoo IMAP settings by there tech team.

I am giving up, going to Gmail...

Good luck to anybody with the same problem.

I am now 100% sure the problem is on yahoo side and sent this email to them.

I will update with their reply when I get it.

I am a Mail premium customer, it has been 3 days now that I cannot log on the IMAP server on any device: I have tried Outlook 2010 on a windows 7 computer, OSX Mail app, Iphone, Ipad ...

My credentials are correct, because I CAN log with those same credentials on the POP server and of course the webmail.

Now another proof that the problem is on your side: on all mail clients: Outlook, OSX Mail app, Iphone, Ipad, if I use my wife's yahoo mail credential (she has also premium mail) with all other settings equal for the IMAP sever, (SSL, 993, imap.mail.yahoo.com) I can log in, and as soon as I change back to my user name and password I am rejected. -----> Remember with my credentials I can log on to the pop server and the webmail.

So for sure something is blocked on your side for my account on the IMAP sever,

Please fix it.

Thank you

For BT users I think I have a workaround (that may work for all clients). Not my ideas but a combination of suggestions given by other users.

A combination of the following seems to have worked for me.

  1. Go to "Spotlight" on your Mac, top right corner. Type "keychain access". When the pop up screen appears, make sure in the left column you have both the following tabs selected. "Login" & "passwords". From there look through the list in the columns you have and delete EVERY mention of "yahoo" i.e. "smpt.mail.yahoo.com". Basically, if you see a line with Yahoo in it, then get rid of it.
  2. Go to your Yahoo email account on your browser, before you login deselect the tick box that asks you if you want to stay signed in. After logging in, log out.
  3. Go to "Mail" on your Mac and open up the prefernce pane. Go to accounts and channge the servers for your BT Yahoo email accounts to the following.

Use:
Incoming Server - apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Server - apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com

4. Restart "Mail". On some of my yahoo email accounts this worked instantaneously for me. On others it took around 5 minutes for the account to start working again. 12 hours in and the problem seems to be gone.

Good Luck to all.

I'm facing same issue with my yahoo account since last Friday.

apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com doesn’t support (null) authentication

On Saturday I had issues with accessing my attachment via webmail.

I tried to find help on yahoo website but nothing useful there.

I tried on all my devices nexus 4, my PC using Outlook and Thunderbolt email client same issue IMAP server is rejecting my password.

Since no solution now I’m the process of migrating to Gmail.

I'm not replying to anyone in particular and I haven't trawled through this whole thread as I'm not with Yahoo so I don't know if this has been covered already (apologies if it has), but I did spot this thread recently where someone found a solution that appeared to work for them. Near the end of page 2, Gtj56 found that eliminating any capital letters from the password solved it for him. Hopefully the fix lasted:
