Yahoo IMAP server - Rejected Password

Why do i keep getting the following on my imac 27" when it does not happen on my ipad or macbook air?

"The Yahoo! IMAP server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user "

Getting very frustrated with it. I have tried removing the account and repacing and also changing the password. It is not the password entry that is the problem. Any solutions? All software up to date.

I'm glad to hear that people are contacting Yahoo! directly. I sent them an e-mail in feedback, but I think their computers simply group feedback into a general report (perhaps some type of graph / chart) that doesn't really make a difference in the grand scheme of things -- e.g., 5 % are inquiring about interface issues. In the meantime, I have been experimenting retrieving and sending e-mail through the company that hosts my website to see if that might suit my business needs. I feel like I shoudn't have to pay Yahoo! a yearly fee to upgrade to PLUS to fix this problem because they benefit by me seeing their advertisements.

I have had this problem for sporadically for months on my MacBook Pro on Mai, though it always resolved itself within a few hours. The past several days, though, it has been working and not working very frequently. I installed Thunderbird and Postbox and had the same problem. I checked many forums and tried all the suggestions. In desperation, I Googled the error message again and found a link to the ATT forum: www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB412563#fbid=VS9GHwXGIzX where it said:

Your email account is locked and/or your email password suddenly stops working

The most common reason an email account is locked or password not accepted any longer is due to suspected compromise of security.

I think this is a relatively new posting, since I don't recall it from my past visit there.

I changed my password at AT &T and in my email clients and my email is now working again -- at least for now.

If ATT really did lockout my password, it did so without notice and caused me -- and obviously others -- great angst and frustration.

Yahoo! and its servers are to blame! This has nothing to do with resetting passwords, however, users might experience some temporary relief by resetting the account password and so forth. Mine has been acting up today, and it just frustrates the heck out of me -- I'm one step away from discontinuing using Yahoo altogether for business.

Here's what I believe is happening. The problem is with Yahoo. Sorry if I don't use the right tech lingo, but Yahoo stopped supporting Outlook some time last year. The same issue started happening there. You could not retrieve mail and you kept on getting a request for your password but everyt ime you entered it the same request came back. Looking around on the web you get the impression that Yahoo will not allow mail retrieval from free services. GMail seems to work fine, though. The other thing to think about is that the IMAP address used for Yahoo mail is old. The new server addresses are inbound.att.net and outbound.att.net. Don't try using them, though. It won't work. So I think what is happening is that Yahoo cut off Outlook and is now doing the same for Mail on the Mac. That seems obvious as you GOOGLE the problem. It's like the problem for everyone started at about the same time. I began to notice a problem last week. I cannot for the life of me figure out why Yahoo (actually it would be AT&T) is doing this. Further, I cannot understand why they just don't tell their customers what they are doing instead of just doing it and driving us batty trying to figure out what is happening.

I clicked Yahoo feedback and gave them the link to this thread. Perahps if more users contacted Yahoo directly (by phone, or otherwise), they would try to prevent this issue from occurring. Yahoo needs free users so that people will click on their advertisements -- so it is unlikely they really want to scare away the free users, becasue their revenue from advertisements would suffer.

I am so glad I found this forum. I have a new iMac and a new iPhone and I struggled with this problem for days. The phone worked fine, but the iMac would not retain or recognize my password. I do believe it's a Yahoo problem, but they are of no help whatosoever. I finally set up a gmail account and had my other e-mail forwarded and everything has been in sync for several days now! I'm so delighted!

thanks for this thread.

my Yahoo account was locked last week for a couple days - no notice, no communication whatsoever. quite disruptive.

I submitted a few problem reports. responses came back over the next couple days. a couple said the issue should be resolved (with no explanation) - and it was resolved. others contained irrelevant boilerplate text, like verification steps. (when the account was locked I couldn't get to the verification steps...)

this week I'm getting frequent "mail cannot connect to the account." looks like I'm going to spend part of this weekend migrating off of the yahoo account. I really don't want to experience another account block anytime soon.

@GeoffroyG, I hope your account works again soon. It's horrid to have it not working, not know what's going on, and no idea how to fix it.

As I mentioned in my last post, I set up a gmail account and now I have my yahoo and rogers mail forwarded to that account. It's an indirect solution, but at least it has been working fine. Yahoo/rogers still doesn't recognize my password when I use the iMadc apple mail program (though it does when I log directly into yahoo mail, but when those accounts are set up to automatically forward all incoming e-mails to gmail, then I have access through the gmail account - no probs with that password. It has been several days without a hitch.

I am now 100% sure the problem is on yahoo side and sent this email to them.

I will update with their reply when I get it.

I am a Mail premium customer, it has been 3 days now that I cannot log on the IMAP server on any device: I have tried Outlook 2010 on a windows 7 computer, OSX Mail app, Iphone, Ipad ...

My credentials are correct, because I CAN log with those same credentials on the POP server and of course the webmail.

Now another proof that the problem is on your side: on all mail clients: Outlook, OSX Mail app, Iphone, Ipad, if I use my wife's yahoo mail credential (she has also premium mail) with all other settings equal for the IMAP sever, (SSL, 993, imap.mail.yahoo.com) I can log in, and as soon as I change back to my user name and password I am rejected. -----> Remember with my credentials I can log on to the pop server and the webmail.

So for sure something is blocked on your side for my account on the IMAP sever,

Please fix it.

Thank you
