Driver for Epson Perfection 3170 Photo

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, I have the same problem now with my Perfection 3170. I have installed all of the available updates and new ICA scan update. Even tho' it installed a new Epson scan, it would not acknowledge my scanner. From an output point of view, VueScan is not much better but I object to having to pay for something that was free and working when I bought the scanner. However, there is a manual work around in Image Capture that will get you closer to the original scanned source. After the source has been overview scanned, alter the scan parameters. I change "IMAGE CORRECTION" from None to Manual. This brings up 4 individual measurements. All 4 markers or indicators should be in the centre position. Using the indicators like a ruler, make these changes: Brightness - 1.5 to the left of centre (-1.5), Tint: .5 left of centre (-.5), Temperature leave as is, and Saturation: .5 to the right of centre (+.5). Then Scan. The resultant scan is pretty close to OK. In photoshop, I reduce the Cyan and Magent by 10% and the Yellow by 5% and I find that my white is now white according to the info box (0C, 0M, 0Y, 0K). Until Epson can supply a lion compatible driver for this printer I will be using this workaround. Hope this helps you get decent scans again.

I had the same issue with my Epson 3170, VueScan effectively supports this scanner, and I can ue it again at its full capabilities.

I have to say it's not free but it's worth its $39,9. As you can try it for free there's not any risk.

The Epson website says that an Apple OS X ICA scanner driver for the 3170 is available from Apple.

The instructions are to connect the scanner then use the Apple menu item to check for software updates.

Tried that and Software Update shows nothing. Any ideas?

Same here. Very poor quality because you can't choose the type of document you are scanning (photo vs. document).

I refuse to use the workaround, and I refuse to pay for VueScan; there is a limit to make us pay and replace everything evertime we are forced to do an OS update. THIS NEEDS TO STOP!

I also don't have any results when I do "Software Update" to download the "Apple X ICA Scanner Driver".

So this morning I was super happy to see that Software Update was asking me to download the latest Epson Driver 5.7.5.

I downloaded.

Results are still bad.

!?!

I will have to buy a brand new scanner even if my 3170 isn't broken. Way to go.
