iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi, iOS 5.1
What does "doesn't work" mean? Doesn't fit? Doesn't turn off display? Doesn't colour match?

It doesn't lock the iPad when I close it. I have the setting turned on in settings but doesn't work..
A reset may help. Push and hold the Home button and the Sleep/On/Off button at the same time for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. Allow to restart. No content will be affected but this procedure.

My case won't turn off iPad when I close either.....of course I'm in the middle of syncing photos...I will try again when sync is completed..
Same Problem here. ipad doesnt lock when open/closing the smart cover.
Theres no menu item. Settings/General. The switch for turning on/off loking with smartcover doesnt exist.
System Recovery (No Backup) changed nothing.
Already tried it.. Works fine with an iPad 2 but not 3
Not that this is going to help but I have just got new iPad and smart cover and so far no problems.
I have just had a play with the cover and it only works with the hinge on the left hand side
Correct, the sensors are along one edge only.

ok. 1 problem solved. the menu entry for switching on/off only appears with my old ipad 2 backup. As a new iPad with no Backup it appers not. what a ******** apple!
But now i got the same problem like "applemadness" settig is turned on but it doesnt lock. damaged magnet?
I'm running an iPad (3rd Gen) set up as a new iPad. I didn't use a cloud backup of my iPad 2 to restore since I wanted to start cruft-free again. The cover setting is there for me in SETTINGS-> GENERAL under the passcode lock options: and it seems to be working fine. Switches the display off when I close the Smart Cover, reawakens it when I open it. The cover, as far as I'm aware, only bypasses the need for the "swipe to unlock" step meaning as you close and open the cover it appears it's not doing anything unless you have a passcode lock active, in which case you have to re-enter this if it's within the timeframe set in the settings. Otherwise it's exactly the same as pressing the top button to put it sleep, then again to wake it (without the swipe option).
Those for whom the cover isn't working, can you tell us:
1) is it a genuine smart cover?
2) if you close the cover then lift the middle of the cover by 'tenting' it slightly, what's on your display? If you lift the right hand edge, obviously this breaks the connection and fires up the display again.
1) hope so. bought it on amazon. was advertised as original an sold from amazon itself.
2) nothing happens. its like i have a piece of paper on it. no reactions.
But the Magnets are working i guess. You can see and feel the pressure.
Troopa,
Hmmmm........weird. So your display just doesn't switch off at all? That's just weird. I know my questions and answer may have seemed like teaching a grandmother to suck eggs, but I do know of someone who thought their cover wasn't working cos the screen was live when they closed it and live when they opened it. It took a few whacks about thte head to fix that one.
What happens if you set a passcode lock, set to 'require immediately'? I'll assume nothing does, but I'll ask anyway.
yea. Also nothing :/
Should visit the genius bar next week.
for me:
iPad cover is genuine and isn't faulty because it works with an iPad 2... My ipad display is unaffected by opening/ closing the display.
The ipad 3 screen does turn on and off when I use a full leather case ie not a smart case if you see what i mean... but the smart case works with other ipads.. weird
I got an iPad 3 today but my smart cover doesn't work with it... Any suggestions?
