iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi, iOS 5.1
I have the same problem still... I have the iFrogz Summit case made for the iPad3.does not work..I had the iFrogz case for iPad 2 and it worked fine..... Looks like the 3 has got an issue for sure....crudola!
I'm going to guess that the magnets in the new iPad are spaced differently than the iPad2. I have a third party cover that worked the sleep/wake mode fine with my iPad2, but not with the new iPad. I suspect I'll have to get a new cover. If I'm right, great way for Apple to sell new covers (and for third party suppliers to have to convert their covers.
I just got the new iPad and also bought the leather Smart Cover from Apple (it arrived first!). It is working perfectly with my new iPad. Wish I could help those of you who are having trouble. I'm assuming that in the Settings you have put "on" the iPad Cover Lock/Unlock.
I just went to the AT&T store where I bought my iPad3 and iFrogz case . I exchanged my iFrogz Summit case for another one just like it ...and it now works....go figure. You can gt a magnet and run it slowly up or down the edge of the iPad3 and it will turn off and on....
I am using the case (not apple brand) bought for my ipad 2, and it does turn the screen off when closed. Somebody mentioned that the magnets on the ipad 3 are on the left side. Is that true? The case I am using appears to only have magnets on the right side.
Genuine Apple case here, ordered along with the iPad from online store and it doesn't work properly.
If I push the smart cover in slightly from the edge of the iPad then it locks but then unlocks again when slid back to the edge.
I have the otterbox defender series with a smart cover built into it and it's working fine. Only thing is it only activates the sleep/wake when on one way even though you can put it on 2 ways. weird...
Just received the new iPad and I have the same problem with a (presumably) authentic Apple smart cover purchased from Amazon. The cover doesn't sleep or wake the iPad. I have the correct setting for iPad Cover Lock/Unlock.
I'm still restoring apps and other data from my previous iPad 1, so maybe things will change when it's done...
Maybe the cover isn't fitted correctly? I have the Yoobao case and I have to make sure the cover hits just right so that the screen goes off.
I've juggled the cover in every direction and it makes no difference. Regardless, though, I have the Apple-made cover so I expect it to work perfectly every time without having to **** around with it.

Just discovered if I lay the smart cover on back to front the screen locks and unlocks exactly as it should...
Wow, same here. Now that's weird...
Actually, it also seems to work if you lay it in the normal position but disconnect the edge with the attaching magnets...

Not if you understand B fields. 😉
Care to explain? Too lazy to read Wikipedia article on magnetic fields.
Just curious, where did you buy your smart cover? I bought mine from Amazon, and I just noticed that the model number doesn't match the one in the Apple Store. Starting to wonder if Apple released a revised version of these covers at some point without any fanfare...
