Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Hi guys, i need your help. I just got my new iPad today 4G+Wifi 64GB (white) and i am getting a distinct yellowish hue on my retina display. On my iPad 2 it is clearly much nicer and brighter in terms of the resolution. I was making the two comparisons by using safari and just opening up a blank white page with the brightness tuned to the max on both, i could tell the new iPad is yellowish and the iPad 2 is white and crisp. I mean is apple kidding me? Retina display with more pixels results in yellowish crappy resolution than my iPad 2? Im not sure if i should return this junk back to the apple store or if they do replace me will they give me back the same crappy display. I am stuck in a middle right now as my authorised reseller is currently out of stock and when i called apple support today they were telling me i would have to wait much longer if they have to ship it back to me. This is really ridiculous and i hope if anyone shares the same problem do drop me a reply.

Thanks.

You have hit the nail on the head! It IS the top third of the display which is more yellow. At first I thought it was the angle that I was holding the iPad at. But then I realized that that was not it. If I turn the iPad the other direction – where the round button is at the top – then things look okay. I tend not to notice the yellowish one-third of the iPad being at the bottom.

However, it is not always practical to hold the iPad in that orientation. it is specially depends what kind of cover you have on the iPad.

I am going to give it a few days also and if it is not better I will exchange it at the Apple Store.

When I opened my sparkly new iPad last Friday morning I too was a little concerned to notice how yellow / warm the display was. On its own it looked great, but side by side with the 2 it looked ill. I reported earlier that it's improved a lot in the last few days, however I have noticed that, like you, the top 1/4 on the camera side is still a little yellow. The rest is now quite 'normal'. I will say that the yellowing is pretty much confined to the top left corner with a slight gradation across the width of the iPad, but it's much much less than it was. It's really only noticeable now on web pages like this one that are whiteish all over and in the Google search bar.

Rotating the iPad makes the Google bar go from sickly to white and back again.

I have noticed that for some reason turning on auto brightness seems to yellow the display a lot, compared to just moving he brightness slider.

I'm hoping it gets better as I go. Don't know how long to leave it before I try and change it though......

I'm on my 6th 'new' ipad. I'm starting to wonder if there are any available at all that don't have a messed up screen. Four of mine (that I took back) had either half of the screen or a quarter of the screen with yellow tint. Some worse than others, but none acceptable. I tried to be happy with a couple of them, but every time I went to type and my keyboard came up two-toned... it's tough to deal with after just paying $800 and having sold my perfectly good ipad 1 on ebay (with a perfect screen). I'm regretting so much I sold my ipad 1. If I still had it I would continue using it and check back in on the ipad 3 situation in a few months and see if they've put out some decent units.

I think all these people who claim to have a 'perfect' ipad just haven't noticed it yet, are choosing to live with it, or they've never had an ipad before and don't realize the screen is supposed to be perfectly white.

Forgot to mention... my 5th ipad that didn't have a yellower hue was the 'cooler' one people have mentioned. Problem is it has a heavy reddish/purplish tint to it as well. And you have to turn the brightness all the way up to try and make it look right. Ridiculous.

3 Days passed, running the iPad at limit, nothing changes. Same reports from my friends.

I saw so far more than 10 iPad3's, same issues on all of em.

I also believe that most users didnt notice it yet as it differs in intensity on many devices.

I kinda feel pity for those users as they might notice it too late.

I think its a technical problem on a BIG series of devices.

I dont know if it disappears, but i kinda dont care anymore. Its not customers work to fix up the yellowish in any way!! I could wait weeks longer for the release, as long as i get a perfect device.

Mine is going back to the store tomorrow. Full refund. 800 bucks. Way too much for getting disappointed.

And dont wanna mess up with another defect unit. Might be that there are some perfect ones. But again, not customers job to doing the quality control!!

Will wait for a while maybe 2/3 weeks and try another new one.

When its still with that issues, i will search for alternatives. There are alot.

@ Ctein : Thank you very much for your colors test. With your black, grey and white test i finally find out what is the problem in my case. So i have decided to share my situation.

My first reaction was to compare the New iPad with my iPad 2... i guess we all did that! I instantly notice colors to be more yellowish! I was VERY disappointed. In my opinion, my iPad 2 was perfect. However, after playing with my New iPad during many hours, the yellowish tint seem to disappear. I was skeptical. I took my iPad 2 to do some tests side by side with my New iPad... guess what... the iPad 2 was more pinkish... the New iPad more white! I was happy... case closed... but i was still curious!

My curiosity brought me at my Apple Store to look at their units. Big surprise! My Apple Store display both New iPad... the "yellow" one and the "blue" one. Side by side, there is a difference! I am surprise they put them side by side on display. When i ask some questions and show that to an employee he was clueless. He did not saw the differences at first, but finally agree after some comparisons. He mentionne there is no way we can know from the packaging which screen will be "blue" or "yellow". But i quickly realized that the "yellow" one have much more accurate colors. The "blue" screen do not feel right at all to me. I guess this will depend on your personnal taste. However, i find out my screen was in fact perfect... even the "blue" one can be find... i am pretty sure most of the people can not see those differences. But in my case, i see the diffrences. In my situation, on craigslist the text is not blue, but not purple either... i guess just in between! As many suggest, this is the real color we should see.

So, this bring me back to the black, grey and white test from Ctein :

http://ctein.com/TOP/cropped_gray_gradient_test.tif

Using this picture with all my products (iPad 2, New iPad, iMac, iPhone), i finally find out that the white is more "pink" with the iPad 2 compare to the New iPad. But, the New iPad is more "pink" compare to my iMac. And my iPhone is more "blue" compare to my iMac and my New iPad. So i guess, what i have learned is no screen is identical. Moreover, the brightness can also affect the colors. My iPad 2 brightness was alwas at 3/10 (10 = maximum britghtness). The New iPad cleary need more brightness to achieve the same result. Something like 5/10. However, since the yellowish tint disappear i have found out that my brightness is now at 7/10 on my New iPad... i guess i was playing at sunlight and i crank up the brightness on my New iPad and never touch it after. Well in my case (i can not tell if this is the same situation for everyone) at 3/10 my white seem more yellow... but at 7/10 my white seem perfect.

Conclusion : i feel like the New iPad achieve more accurate colors. However, i also feel the brightness can also change the tint of the screen.

FWIW - I have already returned one 64GB ATT new iPad 3 - the colors were inconsistent across the screen especially noticeable in whites and neutrals (greys) - there was a severe Redish tint on half the screen and blue on the other half - could also be described as uneven backlighting making one half warmer and the other half cooler.

The replacement I received at the Apple store, wasn't as bad, but I did immediately notice the same issue just not the same degree. I had already been there over an hour and they were so busy, so I took it thinking I could live with it - but after using it for a few hours at home, it is the same problem, just not as severe, but still totally distracting, especially when reading web pages, and books, and any items with mostly white backgrounds, and or neutral colors - the shift in colors is clearly evident, and depending on the orientation of the device in different places. I am taking it back tomorrow to exchange for another one.

If it isnt perfect, I just plan on getting a refund and waiting to see if they will get this straightened out in the future. It is definitely a hardware issue. I don't believe they have the right backlighting balance on these displays, or its just poor quality. Compared to an original iPad 1 with perfectly consistent color across the screen and even an iPad 2 - it just isn't right.

Will update here again after my exchange tomorrow.

My new iPad is pinkish whites on the top 1/3rd and blue in the bottom 2/3rds with the home button at the bottom my new one is bugging me to.

I'm surprised this hasn't been more of am issue I bought mine at the store can I still call AppleCare and gripe without having to go back to the store, I'm sure they already hate me and I'm not in the mood to show my face in there again. It's a pretty problem but none of my other screens are this color.

Mar 22, 2012 12:32 PM in response to lindon85

I have a slight yellow cast on the the left handside of the screen (with the home button on the right) when the iPad is in landscape mode.

Its not massively noticable, but its one of them things that when you've spotted it, your eyes are always getting drawn to it.

Its noticable when I'm using Safari with the white background, and when using the onscreen keyboard. You can see the keys on the left have a slight yellow hue when compared to the right handside keys which do not. The yellow hue is also noticable when a grey background is shown.

I contacted Apple today and I am getting a replacement tomorrow, and the faulty iPad is getting picked up at the same time. Hopefully the new one will be free of the yellow hue.

Mar 22, 2012 12:46 PM in response to james Hall

My warm color cast disappeared the night before last. I can't say that the tint was ever yellow - just warmer-appearing than my iPad 2. Now my iPad 2 seems a tad too blue! And the color cast I saw was over the entire display.

I thought perhaps simply staring at the new iPad rewired my brain a bit to make it appear normal, that in fact the warm tint did not disappear, and that this new "normal" made the iPad 2 only seem bluer in comparison. And I still think that might be happening.

However, I've had my wife take a look and verify what I think I see. She's only had brief glimpses at both devices. She didn't see a warm tint on the iPad, she saw a blue tint on the iPad 2.

For me, luckily, case closed - the warm cast either was caused by glue that hadn't evaporated, as per predictions by some on this thread, and/or my brain adjusted. If you think about it, this could be the case. We don't see orange light that is thrown off by an incandescant light bult, we don't see green from flourescent light sources. Our eyes automatically adjust to make any scene, no matter what the light source, appear to have "normal" colors.

Alessis, above, has come, without saying so or realizing it, to the same conclusion, noting that the displays on all of his devices look at least slightly differnet. And yet, until now, he never noticed the difference. His mind compensated for those differences.

As for the unfortunate james Hall, above, who is on his 6th new iPad, I have a feeling it might be something more to do with james than with the iPads. Maybe, james, you should try sticking with one iPad for a few days, and see what happens.

Mar 22, 2012 1:10 PM in response to iDave

I don't know whether it has much to do with James Hall's personal preference. I just returned my second iPad after keeping it for a fw days running continuously, waiting for the yellow tint on the left hand side to clear up. What annoys me is when a manufacture like Apple, who is touted to carry high quality products, has nothing to say about this issue till now. I've gone through 5 Android tablets, and I finally settled for the iPad 2 for its functionality and speed, and so I was pretty eager to shelve out big bucks for the new iPad. But definitely not for this kind of quality.

Just for fun, I ran the Phillips PM5644 test pattern video on both the iPhone 4GS and the iPad 3 at full brightness ... the color bars are different. The blue on the right hand side is blue on the iphone and purplish on the iPad 3. I am letting it run overnight to see if it makes a difference. If not, it's off to the apple store <sigh>.
