Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

Does this apply as well to the macbook displays as display text in the true blue color but the iPad 3's I've seen show it as nore of a purple or grape color. Graigslist.com is good to compare text colors but eBay shows it as well on bold listings. Thanks for any comments in advance..

Same here! Extremely upset. I have both the original iPad & iPad 2. I open my new iPad last night. I wasn't blown away by the screen although I did notice the text and photos were much sharper but something just wasn't right. Then this morning I open my iPad 2 mail app & realize that my new iPad had a yellow hue. I put each iPad side by side with the exact brightness & WOW it was so apparent. I called Apple Care so I can return it. I am not sure I will replace it or not. btw, I have the Wi-Fi only 64GB White model.

The text on Craigslist is SUPPOSED to be slightly "purplish!" Actually, it's pretty close to a true blue, rather than the cyan that most people mistakenly call "blue."

That's the way it looks on a properly calibrated studio monitor.

It also looks like that on my iPad3.

On my ipad2 and my laptop, the text does indeed look cyan rather than blue. That's because their screens are WRONG.

Just about all portable devices-- pads, phones, and laptops-- have much poorer color rendition than the iPad3. Almost universally, they wil render blue incorrectly as cyan. That does not make them right-- this ain't a democracy. The way the iPad3 is supposed to look is very close to what a calibrated studio monitor would show, not what other mobile devices show.

If you don't like it, indeed you should return the unit to Apple, because this is not something that they will "fix." It ain't broke!

It's a true blue? A blue like a royal blue? No grape or purplish shade to it.......thanks for the info, just trying to confirm. I've looked at four from the same store plus mine and some site the blue went to the purple shade.

I'm pretty sure you have a bum 'Pad. Not because of the "purplish" blues-- they're SUPPOSED to be. But you're reporting desaturated colors, too, and that's definitely wrong.

On a good sample of the new iPad, the colors are distinctly more saturated than on a good iPad2 (or iPhone or laptop). The new iPad can display fully 100% of sRGB color space; the old one could only display about 70%.

Suggest you pull up my color and grey scale gradient images, and I'll tell you what you should see if you have a good unit:

Look at the fully saturated color bar at the bottom of the test image. It should look a lot more saturated on your new iPad, not less. Less means something's wrong.

Also, look at the blue "column, from top of the test image to the bottom. On your iPad2 (and most portable devices), it will look too cyan and light -- more a deep azure or sky blue. It should be true blue at the center, cold and dark (think the color of lapis rather than turquoise). That's the color that's in the test image and that's what a calibrated monitor will show.

It's also why test on things like Craigslist looks more "purplish" on the new iPad-- it's now looking CORRECT.

Finally, look at the yellow "column" from top to bottom. On the old iPad, the bad of pure yellow will be very narrow; it quickly veers off the orange on the red side of the spectrum. On the new iPad (and a properly calibrated monitor) the band looks broader and brighter-- colors that rendered (incorrectly!) as a slightly orangish-yellow on the iPad2 will look much closer to a pure yellow; they'll be less orange.

This is why things like the bookshelves in iBooks and some web sites look so different. What looks like a warm, ruddy tan on your other devices will render as more of a yellow-tan on the new iPad. And, again, this is correct.

Hope this helps diagnose whether folks really have a bum iPad or merely don't like its rendering.

I'm not trying to argue but I work for a large printing organization and the color I'm seeing is not a true blue at least to the eye. To the eye the iPad 2's I've seen show correctly as does the IMacs and Mac minis will color calibrated Apple monitors, and the MacBook air I have. Even the iPhone 4s with the Retina shows a true blue and no purple tinge. The iPad 3's of which one is mine go way out of the normal blue color into purple. Even the windows color monitor we use for proofs shows a truer blue. All said and done I'd just like to know why, not trying to upset anyone, just find out why such variance. I do intend to take the new iPad back but was gathering information to make an informed decission. Thanks for your response.@Ctein

Hmmm... I wouldn't describe the whites as being at all "pinker," they're *slightly* yellower than on the iPad2. More accurate, actually, compared to the D65 standard, on the new iPad.

But... Displaymate, which runs excellent display tests, reports that their new iPad is slightly *cooler* in color temperature than the iPad2. Otherwise, my observations match their tests entirely. So there may be some variation in color temperature between units.

People's color vision varies a lot. I wouldn't put much on slight variations in hues that are being reported. Do the color gradient comparisons I just described. If your results basically match mine, you've got a good iPad and should stop worrying. If they're substantially different, well...

Thanks for the test links. My text that I see blue as blue as the third color from the left on your color test is more like the purple or 2nd color from the left. I hope I've explained this correctly. Any way I suspect mine is defective and will return it. Again, Thanks for the color and G/S links.......ds

Ahh, you know color! OK, that helps a lot.

In that case, if you say your iPad is running purple, then I do believe it's running purple.

As a color professional I know you understand the problem with lay folks who call cyan "blue" and think that's what blue's supposed to look like. I gotta assume most people writing don't really know the correct color terminology.

If you tell me your display's off, then it's off.

And, really, I'm NOT trying to argue that there aren't bum displays out there. Just don't want people getting upset over a good display merely because it looks different from what they expected.

FWIW, best as I can tell from screen photos (blehhh), rgoldd's display, pictured above, looks good.

I ran the color test on both my 2 and the 3 as well as my windows HD PC and iPhone 4s. They are looked pretty much the same with very slight tint variations as expected "except for the iPad 3". The blue band is almost half the width of the blue on the iPad 2 and other displays and is mostly the color of the second band (purple). I can see problems with the yellow as well as its band is almost over by the adjacent colors......thanks again for the test link.........Back to the Apple store....

Earlier today at school I asked my friend to compare mine to her iPad 2 she immediately noticed it was pink she gawked at it and said I should take it back. I went into the Apple Store compared it to the first two and it looked pink and one employee even said he thought the colors looked a little off, then when they finally got a specialist to help me and manager approval (they wanted me to schedule a genius bar for tomorrow) they exchanged mine. They brought me out a new one and I thought it looked pink compared to the display ones (though less pink). I ultimately stood there for about 5 minutes looking at it. I said I still thought it looked pink I didn't request a different one though but the guy snarkly told me he'd have to get a manager again, I was sort of attracting a small crowd this one lady watching especially close to what was going on. I just stood there looking at it and decided since it was so much less pink I would accept it. As I was leaving the store I saw the same friend she works across at a store that sells purses, in there talking to her manager before her shift. She looked at it and said the new one was better but I still had her go look in the Apple Store and she said the new one still looked pink but this one was much better and I looked at the 3rd down iPad this time and it looked slightly different colored more towards pink but still less than mine.

I suppose I will be keeping this one even though I'm still distressed since my iPad is most used over my iPhone and MacBook Pro, maybe I'll get it replaced under AppleCare+ later on for $50.

My iPad 3 came yesterday. The white is yellower than my iPad 2 and I dislike it. I'm sot so sensitive to resolution but very sensitive to colors. It's slightly warmer on the camera side than the home button side. I'm not a pro but flesh tone just looks better on my iPad 2. People look slightly yellow and sickly on the new one.

ALso, for some reason, the new iPad is harder on my eyes. It's just harsher somehow. Keep adjusting the brightness and it either looks too dim and washed out or too harsh. Whereas the iPad 2 just looks comfortable unless I turn the brightness way up.

IVe been running it non stop (no screen save) hoping to "break it in" somehow.

This is a bummer because so far my iPad 2 looks better, even though I can see the new one is sharper on the retina ready apps.

From I've heard so far if it yellow you need to return it for a new one or refund. Mine wasn't yellow but the blues and yellow were'nt right. The photos with the camera were really good as long as I transferee them to my Mac for viewing. I never had it over heat though but it did have the Wifi issue. So back it went, hopefully the next one will be OK but I still have my old iPad2 and it works great.
