Is anybody else getting a yellowish hue on their new iPad?

I first noticed the issue because when I had the keyboard up, the ?123 button looked yellowish. My screen seems to have a couple of flaws. It is yellowish on the left side, almost all the way to the top. And the bottom of the screen appears darker than the top. It is most noticeable when I have it in landscape mode. I really want to like my new iPad, but these flaws are ruining my enjoyment of it. I was hoping that the yellow tint on the left would go away, and it still might. But even if it does, I doubt that the bottom and top will suddenly become the same brightness. I have had a pretty bad string of bad luck with iPads. I tried two iPad 2s and both of them had screen flaws. I ended up keeping each one for a couple of weeks before bringing them back to best buy. I bought this one at Target, because I don't want to get blacklisted at best buy for returns. Maybe it would be best to just return it and wait a few months to see if they can work out these flaws. I don't want to go down the road of having to do a bunch of returns to get one that is right, because I am afraid that at some point, I wont be able to exchange any longer, and will be stuck with a dud. It is unfortunate, because this one has no other issues. The battery is behaving fine, it is not overheating, and the wifi works perfectly. It is too bad that my eyes are so discerning of flaws, because other than these screen issues. It's a good iPad.

One question. I thought that I saw somewhere that the screens for this production run were made by both Samsung and LG. is it possible that screens from one of the manufacturers could be more prone to problems?

Bought my iPad on March 16 (Australia) and felt that the colour was not as white as my iPad 2 but today the iPad looks much better, white is white, no yellow tinge anywhere. Maybe just needed a few days to burn in properly. The display is brilliant though and its sharpeness in text is far better than the iPad 2 and makes reading small print much easier.

Do they have ways to measure brightness uniformity of screens at the Apple Store? I know that they have fancy thermometers to measure temperature. It would be nice if they could measure the brightness and color uniformity. My wife thinks I'm imagining things. She just doesn't see what I'm seeing. But of course she looks at it for ten seconds, says that she doesn't see it, and hands it back to me. Of all the iPads that have passed in and out of my life, the only ones that have had a uniform screen were my iPad 1, and her iPad 2.

If I was just imagining it, I could learn to live with it. 🙂

My personal take is that if there's a problem with the iPad, return it ASAP. Otherwise, you may have to go through the technical team to get their approval for a replacement when all you want is a good set. My understanding is that you can return with no questions asked within 14 days. That is what apple agrees.

I think apple is rather perfectionist in nature considering the products they have designed. Unfortunately, maybe due to other objectives like profits to the shareholders, they may have to buy panels from other companies that may not share apple's ideals. I think apple should make such companies pay a penalty in the event they deliver faulty parts to the customers and when customers complain. In fact, they should have apple personnels at the factory to do random quality checks to ensure quality and penalize the screen panel providers if they provide yellow tint panels or non uniform panels.

With that customer will be happy the first time. Experience will be great and there wont be additional costs for redelivery and repackaging, etc, etc.

Of course this will be the ideal i.e. 100% do it right all the time. Based on my experience with apple panels and the number of complains in the forums on panels, apple may have a long way to go on quality panels. As for other parts like keyboard, cd drive, motherboard, etc, I have never had a problem with apple. Those parts are easier to achieve quality control I guess...

My first iPad had a distinct yellow tint on the left, noticed it when the keyboard keys seemed to have different hues of grey, same as usmaak. Returned it, got a second iPad which also has yellow tinting. Will wait a week before I make up my mind whether it's a glue issue or a manufacturing defect.

I had a similar issue with iMacs in 2010. Went through 4 iMacs: three 27" and one 21".This was before and after Apple stated they had fixed their manufacturing process abroad for the displays -- I got the first batch of fixed iMacs, only to still have the yellow tint issue. Finally went with a Macbook Pro.

Hopefully it's not the same story here. Paying that much for a 64GB iPad which has a screen defect, where the main brilliance of the new iPad is the retina display, is totally unacceptable.

Apple really needs some better quality control.

As a photographer I use my iPad 1 as a portable portfolio. I received my new iPad 3 last Friday, loaded it up and compared it with my iPad 1 - noticed the green/yellow tint on the iPad 3, called Apple support, who told me to take it in to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, where the rep compared the images on my iPad 1 with my iPad 3 and agreed that there was a color problem. We tried the same image on another iPad 3 in the store and it looked just as bad. I asked the rep at the Genius Bar whether this was a known problem and he said no. Since they could not guarantee me that there would be a fix forthcoming, I had to return my new iPad and ask for my money back.

The resolution on the new iPad screen is stunning so I'm hoping that Apple can get the color cast problem resolved as I sure would like to use this new devise to show off my portfolio.

I also notice the yellow tint on my new iPad's screen. Basically, half of the screen towards the Facetime camera is more yellow than the other half. It's really noticeable on the virtual keyboard while in landscape mode. Here are a few pictures I took:

On the picture above, the right side is more yellow than the left. Facetime camera is on right side.

After turning iPad on other side, the yellow tint is now on the left. Facetime camera is now on left side.

Above is a picture of backlight bleeding. It appears to coincide with yellow tint. In lower right, there's a small backlight bleeding, and it does have a slight yellow tint on virtual keyboard.

Please try this on your new iPad and see if color is consistent across virtual keyboard - place iPad in landscape and put your hand over the middle of keyboard. Does the left side match the right?

P.S. I have an iPad Wi-Fi + 4G LTE for AT&T 64GB

Similar problem here, but I don't believe that they never heard of it. I saw other people complaining about the yellow screen as well when I exchanged mine. But between that and the heat, I returned it after the replacement had both problems as well. Pity, I sold my iPad 2, which I love, on the bet that this one would be better qualiity. Hopefully, they'll iron out those problems soon and I can get it.

My screen looks 100% exactly like yours. I have the same yellow hue only on the camera side. I got my new iPad 16gig black wifi on the 16th ...and unfortunately the hue does not seem to get better over time.

I also have slight backlight bleeding but in my case it's on the home button side and there the screen looks perfect. So I don't think the yellow hue has anything to do with the backlight bleeding.

I have to say that I'm very disappointed with the new iPad ... I really wonder if Mr. Jobs would have been happy with it. I had the iPad 1 and the iPad 2 and in comparison the new iPad feels so "inefficient" or "unapple" somehow. It's thicker (I admit you don't really feel it...nevertheless it's a step back), it's heavier (I can feel that), it's pulls more amps and gets warm (for me another step back), it charges extremely slow and the charger gets concerningly hot... And finally, the most important feature...the fantastic screen (yes, I like the high resolution!) ... obviously lacks quality control and (in my case) is half yellow, ruining the whole experience.

Anyway...I will wait 3 or 4 more days...if the yellow does not get better the iPad goes back. I will then wait and see how the Sharp and LG screens look like.

@ erio I got my new iPad just yesterday. Noticed that it has a warmer colour balance than my iPad 2. However even my iPhone 4S had a warm colour cast when I first got it, now after 3 months that cast has all but disappeared. So I expect that my new iPad too will settle down to a more neutral cast in time. Meanwhile I went to the local Apple store and compared it to the new iPads there. All the demo iPads had a more neutral cast, though in my opinion a couple of them were slight too blue rather than neutral. On my iPad, the slightly yellow cast is slightly more prominent on the left hand edge in portrait mode. There is no light bleed on my screen at all even at full brightness and a full black background. Coming to your iPad, judging by the pics you've posted, I fear that you have got an uncaaeptable sample. The light bleed is much too prominent, as is the colour cast. I think you should ask for a replacement - the colour cast may well improve with time but the light bleed will not. Best of luck!

Puntino, I'll do the same and wait it out. There's a good chance I'll get the same or worse iPad.

Firoze, I'll return the iPad within 14 days. I'll buy again after LG and Sharp screens are out.

When I bought my 4S the screen was dull and yellow too. I read all about the screen glue needing to dry/cure. I can honestly say now it is a cool blue color after several months. Just be patient!

Proroc, I don't think it's the same situation. Unlike iPhone 4S, iPad display is not glued to lcd. Please see step 9 on ifixit.com:

My iPad 3 is experiencing the same issue with the top 1/3rd of the screen being yellow and the lower 2/3rds being more blue. I have a Verizon 4G 16gb Black model. I noticed this defect as soon as I started using it. I do not think this discoloring issue will fade over time. The cigarette like stain is across the top when holding it in landscape mode with the home button to the left. I paid $670 for this thing with tax only to get a subpar unit. My iPad 2 screen and colors looked great compared to this. This screen is also a horrible shade of yellow and even though the text may be much clearer, the "cigarette" stained color of the screen *****.
