New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

Seriously??? Seriously??? "I can't play COD for 48 straight without it getting to hot to hold" Seriously??? If you're dumb enough to think that you can play Call of Duty forever on this device without it getting hot, you do need to place the ipad back in it's box and take it back.

Tell ya what... go place you hand on your XBOX 360 or Playstation 3 after playing for 3-4 hours straight and then come back and whine some more about how hot this product made of aluminum alloy, with the same or better processing power, that has twice the resolution of the best HD TV out there, while remaining less than a half an inch thick has overheating issues.

All this reminds me of when the iPhone 4 first came out and a rumour was started that it had antenna issues. What a load of BS.

I own the newest iPad and the iPhone 4 and have had no issues with either. Love em.

My NEW iPad warmed up too...

Agree that MUST use the charger that came with to charge (AT&T store confirmed)

Targus sells a great full case that eliminates the warm issue.

CNBC ran a piece at 10AM EST where they said gets warm after 30 minutes

I drove for over two hours yesterday with 4G running - was warm - not TOO hot to handle.

Remember the antenna issue with iPhone?

THIS TOO SHALL PASS

I haven't been running mine hard, just an hour here and there in the evening.

The iPad arrived with a 93% charge. After turning it on for a quick check, I charged it with the included wall charger to 100% and I'm still running on the same charge (since the 16th). I'm down to about 60%

It doesn't get warm in the lower left or anywhere in any orientation. It does sound like a batch issue. I'll post back if mine warms up or becomes hot.

I am stomping my feet! I waited since Christmas to have mine. I just got the iPad 3 64 3g wifi Friday. While I was playing a bubble popper game it got very hot so I removed it from the case. I didn't want to fry the innards. When I set it on my lap - it burned my thighs! I had a red rectangle on my thighs for about 15 minutes! I am ****** that they didn't know of this 10 degrees hotter or (95 fricking degrees) than the iPad2 and fixed it before the release. I just left Verzon a very unhappy customer and I am obviously still stomping my feet!

That's really strange. Mine does not get hot and I'm hold it with nothing inbetween the back and my hands.

It holds a charge very well and doesn't get hot while charging which it does in a very reasonable amount of time. Doesn't get hot while watching movies, searching the Web, looking at Email, Playing games or Downloading.

If I had to hazzard a guess I'd say you have defective units.

Iv'e had time now to talk to a number of other 3rd Gen. owners in my area who are also experiancing no over heating problems. For that matter no problems at all.

My 64gig wifi iPad 3 has been running very hot (bottom left & left edge) since I received it March 16. It starts to get warm after 30 minutes. I have brightness set to 60%. Smart cover. It also takes a LONG time to charge. I may return it before my 14 days are up. I hope it's just a bad batch.

New data here. My new iPad 32 GB WiFi has been getting hot enough to go into shutdown mode when using the NetFlix App after 30 minutes. It gets very warm when viewing web pages with Safari but doesn't shut down. I am not using any case at all because I didn't want it to damage itself.

Here's the kicker. My brother bought an identical iPad at the same time I bought mine. He brought his new iPad over for comparison. Using the NetFlix App to watch the same movie on his unit revealed that his iPad only gets slightly warm. If my iPad ran at the temperature his does I would have no complaint at all.

This seems to indicate a quality control issue more than a design flaw. I think people having overheating issues should swap them at the Apple Store for a new unit. The new iPad is capable of running relatively cool but some defective units have gotten into the supply chain.

I don't have any 3D games to really stress my iPad with but the Netflix App is enough to cause my unit to shut down fairly quickly. This simple comparison between identical units as described above shows that if you have a defective iPad, it will run too hot no matter what Apps you use it with.

Apple should make a press release soon to get this situation under control. The "iWaffle Iron" jokes are already spreading in forums and email.

You asked about a method for measuring the actual temperature of your overheating new ipad, and I'm using a little gun-shaped scanner from SMART SENSOR, it's an infrared thermometer which reads temps from -32c to 300 degrees c. i believe I've read Apple has stated that 35 celcius is the upper temperature for stable ipad efficacy...Yesterday my scanner registered as high as 104.8 degrees F. That was right bedore I introduced New ipad to Old Lettuce in my refrigerator's crisper. Pass the aloe

Everyone experiencing a heating problem with the new iPad should contact Apple care to tell them about.

I called in yesterday and correct I spoke with said that they had not received any reports of the heating problem. He did sound interested when I told him about it; I encourage everyone else to call into Apple care and at least make them aware of the problem even if they cannot fix it themselves.

Hi All,

This is my first post on the Apple Forum. I was wondering if anyone on here can give me some advise please?

I live in the United Kingdom and I have a iPhone 4S (32G) on a 24 month contract with Vodafone. On Saturday (17/03/2011) I got a call from one of Vodafone's Sales Departments in relation to the iPad 3. The sales consultant offered me the iPad 3 on a 24 month contract @ £32 a month with a one off £69.99 up front charge. Also with a additional £10 per month insurance premium. I told the sales consultant that I would have to think about it. I haven't made my mind up yet but since Saturday the reports in the United Kingdom's media about overheating and charging issues has made me a bit skeptical about purchasing the iPad 3 from Vodafone. Should I get it or get a iPad 2 instead?

What should I do people?

Any help please?

I don't get any hot spots what so ever. When using it, the warmth on the back feels like what you should get. It's hard to tell if it's the Ipad or tranfer from your hands. The screen feel about what i would expect from use of previous products. After charging from 51% to bring it to 100% which took about 2 hours with the Ipad asleep. I could just feel a slight difference on the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the back case.
