New iPad overheating?

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have. LTE? Wifi only? Details matter. And, really now, "frying eggs?"

Mine is 32g wifi and the first day I noticed it was hot on the back and asked my son who owns an ipad 2 if his got hot and he said no. I just want to find out if this is a harmless issue or if this will lead to the internal parts going bad quicker. I want to take this to the beach this summer and Im already reading limitations people are suggesting, keeping it out of the sun and turning down the brightness. I may have to return and buy a nook. 😟

I don't know if it's just me, but does it sound like some Andriod people just came in here to bash the new iPad? I've been here on this page to the beginning, and am hearing a lot of... I'm not going to get an iPad, because of this thred? How do they even know what an iPad 3 feels like yet, and complaining? People are coming here to complain, before they even get the iPad? Are you joking?

When this first thred started it was serious, and now it's sounding like a joke.

This is no joke...

Happens every time a new product is released. Antennagate was so overblown (I never experienced dropped calls, not once, no matter where or how hard I held my iPhone). When iPad 2 was released there was yellowgate. Oh the posts of how the screen made colors yellow were prolific. Now there's heatpadgate, and as usual it's being overblown. I do suspect there are many who get their kicks bashing Apple and you're probably right that many are here to flame, and don't even own one.

I've pushed my new iPad hard and it's yet to get warm. But, if anyone who legitimately owns one isn't happy, they should take it back. With more than 3 Million units sold in a week, the law of averages dictates there have to be some units which may have issues. But, the vast majority of iPad owners are sitting on their couches enjoying their stunning new device with no hint of any issue.

Some of us only registered to attempt to troubleshoot our problem. I love Apple products (although I do use an Android phone now), and I have a very real issue with the new iPad. Both of the new ones that I tried became way too hot from simple web browsing, even with approximately 50% brightness... I drained the battery of my new iPad and am letting it recharge (didn't help the first that I exchanged). I've been looking forward to a tablet screen with a resolution this sick since I first heard the rumors. I may have to just wait til the next generation or until something else hits the market. These really are too expensive to have such a flaw, IMO.

New ipad black 16gb wifi only, bought at Walmart 12 am March 16th:) I would say it easily gets much warmer then my ipad 2 just searching the web, which isnt to bad....However My ipad 2 never even got warm doing anything! But the main problem is playing HD games on the new ipad, is when it does get HOT!!!! Infinity Blade 2, Real Racing 2 after about 15-20 mins the back is hot and your hands are sweating.. And the corner glass is hot as well!! The new ipad looks amazing, but something has to be wrong for it to get this hot!? Matt

I picked up my black 32 (wifi Only) GB iPad on Friday morning. As soon as I started using it I felt it being warm. It is not excessive when compared to Laptop, , but for a device like this it is not comfortable. Last night I was around 15% charge and plugged it in for 5 hours no apps running except a desk clock which showed on my iPad screen. When I checked it it was 35% charge. I called support and they said it can take 12 hours to charge. Well it charged less then 20% in 5 hours, the math does not add up.

I wamt an iPad, I waited for the 3rd generation. If I have to I will return and get the iPad 2,but I want this one. I want the Apple Support to realize there is an issue and find a solution. I am an Apple Fan.

Thanks to everyone for showing me I was not imagining it.

I posted earlier that my new ipad gets warm, but not burning hot. My sister tonight, asked me if mine heated up and I told her it did warm up, but did not get burning hot. She said she thinks I should be concerned because of what she read. I have read posts here of people saying their new ipads don't heat up at all. Here is my question, I wasn't worrying because it got warm, but not hot enough to feel like it might burn. I thought it was to be expected that there would be some heat emmited because of the new battery and such. But now I am wondering if I should be worried if there are some who say their ipads don't even get warm. I like the screen and other features but this evening the worry has crept in because of reading those that say theirs does not even warm. Apparently nothing can be done other than people return their ipads and I really don't want to do that, but it was a big investment for me and I don't like feeling like I made a big mistake. I was not worried earlier today, but as the evening has worn on, like I said before, the worry has crept in. I am typing this on my Macbook Pro and it does feel hot in the top left corner and I feel it in the keys. The ipad has not gotten this hot though. I want to get back to not feeling worried that I am not being smart or realistic about this. Can anyone help me? I thought it was normal to feel some warmth. What do you think?

I live in Sarasota, FL and I would love to have someone to come by and play Infinity Blade 2 or Real Racing 2 for about 20-30 mins and feel the back of my New ipad and the front corner and feel how HOT it gets! Its irratating, for some people to come on here and say people are making up this heat problem! This heat is a real issue!!! I love apple, owned a ipad 2, iphone 3Gs and currenly own iphone 4 and new ipad! My wife has a iphone 4s and both sons have ipod touch 4th gen. Even though my new ipad does get hot, I will mostly likely keep it, because the graphics are awesome!! Hopefully Apple will do something, but im not sure what they can do?? Just like when the xbox 360 came out in 2005 and they were getting to hot and the consoles would overheat and fail. Hopefully Apple will give us some news soon. Thanks, Matt

P.S I only use my new ipad in my house and have tested it with my leather case and without and in both instances the new ipad gets HOT playing HD games, but I would say by the feel it gets a little hotter with the leather case. 16gb wifi only, black...

I heard the story on the radio about the warmer temps in the new ipad over the ipad 2. I was going to buy a new ipad this Friday (3/23/12). I purchased a case for it already but im wondering if the case would make the temp problem worse? Anyone use a hard case like the Otterbox Defender series? Does the case make the ipad heat worse?

Mar 20, 2012 9:43 PM in response to Matt941

Matt I'm not saying all the people coming and registering today are fake users .. but I do think there's a big portion of those .. and in some way this is making things worse for users that may have a real problem ..

Some new tests are in .. and they prove that the temp is rising a bit compare to the iPad 2 .. but not enought to justify all this "heatgate"

in any case if the iPad will fail because it does overheat I'm sure Apple will replace it as they did with a lot of other products that had problems in the past .. been this faulty motherboards or else ...

Good luck with your new toy ..

don't read to much into the postings .. lots are fake .. if you're concern go to an apple store or call apple tech support ..

CNET did run new test tonight and the results are saying the device is not burning hot at all

because it is on the internet (comments) doesn't mean it is all real ..

Yes, I read that and thats ok for me.. you can feel a decent heat rise from the ipad 2 compared to the New ipad when surfing the web and doing minor tasks etc..., which is fine, I dont have a problem with that. I actually bought all the HD games designed for the New ipad, because I wanted to see what this baby could do and its impressive! But every single one makes the New ipad get HOT, not luke warm but HOT after 20-30 minutes and after myabe 45 mins I turn the game off because its just to hot on the whole back and the corner glass. Im not worried, if it fries I will return it for a new one:)
