visible light leakage on ipad 3, very annoying

Just received my new ipad (32G wifi, black). After turning it on for the first time I noticed a visible light leakage at the top edge of the screen, it is at least one inch long and very annoying indeed! I've googled this issue and found that there are some others complaining about the same thing, while one guy mentioned that, for his device 'the leakage disappeared after 2 hours of use'. well, I've been using it for at least 3 hours and it doesn't seem to get even a little bit better. I'm quite disappointed as my ipad 2 has no such issue at all, not to mention that the new ipad seems to generate more heat, makes it uncomfortable to hold it like a book. I'm bringing it to my local store tmr, hopefully they can do sth about it.

This isn't the first model iPad to have this issue. In the past, many users have reported that it actually goes away with a little time. Something about the glass adhesive settling in. Don't know first hand since I've never had the issue myself. If you are not comfortable with that, you may want to try returning it again. Not sure there is much more that can be offered by anyone here.

I had this issue with an iPad2 that I bought back in November. I decided to return that one and wait the few months for the new iPad. I saw it on a couple of iPad 2 store models in Best Buy as well. I am on my third new iPad now, and this one has this issue. It is not by the camera, but along the right side of the screen. The light leak is about an inch and a half long, along the right side. The thing is, if I look at the iPad in a dark room, I do not see any difference between the right and left side of the screen. There is no bleeding at all. It is really only noticeable when I turn the iPad at exactly the right angle and look. On the iPad 2 that I had, it definitely affected the screen in lower light situations and was very annoying. Given that I don't notice any effect on the screen itself, even in low light, I am very tempted to keep this one. My previous two new iPads had uneven backlighting and dead pixels. This has a very evenly lit screen, no yellow at all, and no dead or stuck pixels. It is actually a beautiful screen. If there was some way to know that this would never get worse, I will defnitely keep it.

I was referring to the minor light leakage running up the right side of the screen and my concern about whether it would get any worse. If it stays the same, then it doesn't matter to me. If it gets worse, then that could become a problem. I just don't know if these things tend to get worse over time, or whether it just stays the same.

It shouldnt get any worse. I had a couple of iPad 2s that had really bad light leakage and the third was not too bad but still present. If it is not affecting you in low light condidtions then it sounds like it will be as good as it will get.

My iPad 3 actually has no light leakage, no dead pixels and no discolouring, but I have a philips TV that looks like it is broken in low light there is so much leakage.

I guess it is down to the assembly line and the way the parts went together on the day. Complete pot luck to get none at all.

I would advise to keep it and enjoy it 🙂 Good luck!

Doubtful. This is looking like the iPad 2 all over again.

I went through so many iPad 2's at launch that I can not even remember the exact count; they all had this problem.

It's very pitiful and sad to see the same exact problem on the iPad 3rd gen as well.

So are these units shipping with the brightness at 50% setting just like the iPad 2 to hide the problem?

The iPhone 4 and 4S (afaik) do NOT ship at 50% brightness!

Apple knows about this; they have to from all the iPad 2 articles; they just figure most people don't care.

Unrelated but I got my mom a refurb iPad 2 and when we got it, the wifi didn't work.

It said "certified apple refurbished" right on the box and I got it directly from Apple.com store...took it into the genius bar and they didn't know what to say -- my question was how did this possibly pass inspection? Their response was they can't catch everything...even though it says "certified" -- come on now...

I was thinking about getting my mom another refurb iPad 2 but then I thought I should just get her a brand new 3rd gen...however with the same exact display problem again? I don't know anymore. The Apple I knew is long gone; that much is apparent.

Also even on the refurb iPad 2 I got with the bad wifi, the display still had some minor yellowing on the top by the camera.

I have this same problem with my iPad 3. I have called apple today. His words was "this looks unusual to me" and he also had a word with his technical team. They came back and said to restore my iPad, I don't no how restoring your iPad could possibly sort out a lighting issue which is a hardware problem. I have now made an appointment at the genius bar and will look to replace my iPad.

However I am worried about replacing my iPad as there would of been hundreds which have been returned already for whatever issues and I could end up with a refurbed iPad which I do not want. I have paid good money and should have a brand new iPad. Apple did say there wouldn't be a refurbed one as there aren't any as it's so new, but still, it's in the back of your mind. He did say it would be given to me just in a box, swapped iPad for iPad.

Has anyone had this same issue and have had it replaced or are you happy to just put up with it? Or waiting to see if it got better (some say adhesives drying) which I doubt very much. This is the edges not being sealed properly on the iPad screen, it'll never get better. But do you think it could get worse? Maybe if someone said it never will get any worse,i would keep it as it doesnt effect my use whatsoever from app to app, video to video, pic to pic. Please any replies would be appreciated.

You bought a new ipad and if it is defective when you returned it to an Apple store, you will not get a refurbished because you bought a new one.

Refurbished products are marked refurbished even in the box they come in, including ipads. Besides, Apple has not had enough time to refurbished the new ipads yet. You have to understand that they don't get refurbished in the US, they are sent back to China.

I usually buy mostly refurbished PCs and my ipad 1 was refurbished also. Let me explain to everyone what Apple does to refurbished ipads, iphones, etc. They get back to the factory and anything that was wrong with it gets fixed, including replacing parts, like if the screen is bad, they put a new screen. Once everything is working correctly, they will use a new glass cover, so you will never get a scratched glas cover, plus a new aluminum back, so that also will look brand new.

In fact I believe that the best value out there is in refurbished products. This time I just did not want to wait around four months o so for the first refurbished to show, so I bought a brand new one and it happens to work just fine.

Let me explain something to you, all tablets, androids too, ship at 50% brightness and with auto brightness on, get it? It is not just Apple trying to hide anything. Why? Because only an invicile would use the new ipad at 100% brightness all the time, except in the sun, outside. If you do inside, you are an unusual person or you need to have your eyes check. 100% brightness is way too bright for any indoor activity, period.

So, quit whining, get your refund and buy some other brand and then go to their forums where to be able to sign up you have to provide a serial number. You might not be here if that was the case in this forum, am i right?

Thanks for your insight Alaska, however -- I use all my devices (including my mac book air) at 100% brightness, along with all my dell ultrasharp IPS displays.

IPS displays are meant to be used at 100% brightness.

My iPad 1 does not have ANY PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER with the screen; no bleed, nothing.

It's at 100% brightness all the time.

I wouldn't know anything about android tablets; never used one.

Also my iPhone 4 is used at 100% brightness without any issues as well.
