New iPad (3) won't charge while in use

Apart from running very hot while plugged in and in use, it seems that the New iPad uses more power than the charger supplies.

My battery meter slowly goes DOWN while in use and plugged in/charging instead of going UP!

Seems the only way to get the battery fully charged is to stop using it!

It's a 64GB Verizon 4G version.

(and, yes, the heat on the back of the thing is starting to bug me).

My new iPad won't even charge sometimes, at all. It's plugged into the wall, I've put it to charge all night, when I wake up it's gone up by 2percent. I'm making sure nothing is running and that the screen is dim, but this is a bit ridiculous.

Your screen doesn't turn off after so many minutes? If the iPad is in sleep/lock mode, it should charge.

This looks like a bit oversight on Apple's part. They stuck and laptop sized battery in the iPad without beefing up the charger. Trying to charge via a computer's USB port will get you no where fast, it's simply evolved past that. The only thing Apple could do to "fix" this problem is offer up a higher capacity charger, and if they're really nice, they'll give them out to the 3+million who've bought these things. 🙂

err, they did offer up a higher capacity charger (higher capacity than a computer's USB port anyway) - the 10Watt wall unit you get with every iPad since day one.

The reality is that USB ports, even those meeting the revised standards for USB 2 and USB 3 do not put out very much power at all - not enough for tablets which are ever increasing in cpu power, storage, screen and so on. You cannot get blood from a stone, and you cannot get 10watts of power out of a computer USB port never designed to deliver more than 900mAmps at 5Volts.

People post about this "issue" like is unique to iPads. Its not. My Nook color ereader is the same - it will charge off a USB if idle/sleep or off, but then only slowly. Other tablets are the same - their power demands are too great for a computer data port to meet them fully.

iPad's should be charged using the suppied 10W charger. Most computer USB ports do not put out enough to charge an iPad. It has ALWAYS been this way, so maybe you should read the iPad Manual which has a section on charging best practices.

As to iPad charging while in use even if plugged into the Wall, Consumer Reports verified yesterday that the new iPad does NOT charge while being used. I'm sure this has to do with the redesigned battery.

When I charge my iPad, I almost always charge at night when I'm sleeping and I simply don't need or want my iPad to be on. I put the cable in, plug it into the wall, and power it down. It will charge most efficiently this way.

The "issue" you responded to isn't the issue of this post. "tofisher" mentioned it wouldn't charge off a PC USB port, but I think everyone already knows that. The "issue" in this post is the new iPad doesn't charge when in use, even plugged into the supplied 10W charger.

The consenus is that a 20W charger would allow the simultaneous use of the iPad and charging (not to mention a much faster charge time when the iPad is not in use).

And, kennb3 was referring to the existing 10W charger not being enough, and that Apple should supply a higher (20W) charger for free.

Tried recharging for the first time this morning. The 10W included power adapter was alarmingly hot after two hours, so I unplugged it from the wall. Wouldn't ever leave something that hot plugged into the wall any longer than that, whether I'm sleeping or not. Wi-fi and cellular data were off and screen brightness is set at about 50%. Location and Notifications were not off, but that shouldn't matter. I'd started charging after completely turning off this wi-fi+ 4 G 32G device. Battery level went from 63% to 93% over two hours. Is there a way to tell when the battery is fully charged without turning on this device, anybody?

I'm having a similar issue. I've had the iPad since last Sunday and have charged it overnight everyday. It came to the weekend (where I tend to use the iPad more), the battery ran down yesterday early-afternoon while I was watching video so I decided to recharge it using the 10W wall charger.

I then read a Kindle (iPad app) book for hours yesterday afternoon (really easy to do on the retina screen) with the charging cable still plugged in, but even though the charging symbol was present - when I took the charging cable out to see what the battery was like, it hadn't moved (up or down)!

I made a Genius appointment today, the guy did a diagnostic and couldn't find a problem with the battery, he said it was "healthy". He offered me a replacement iPad for peace of mind, but thought maybe there will be a software update soon to fix the issue (I opted to keep my iPad since I'm not convinced a replacement will be any different).

My thinking is the same as a few people here, I'm wondering if the 10W adaptor is really cut out for the new power hungry battery.

Every battery-included electronic device I own is capable of recharging while in use (including my £20 shaver). If it's design flaw then I expect this to be fixed, partly as this costs so much more, but mostly as it's going to become a real inconveniece. I hope that adding to this board might help surface the extent of the problem.

Otherwise, I'm loving my new iPad!
