Apart from running very hot while plugged in and in use, it seems that the New iPad uses more power than the charger supplies.
My battery meter slowly goes DOWN while in use and plugged in/charging instead of going UP!
Seems the only way to get the battery fully charged is to stop using it!
It's a 64GB Verizon 4G version.
(and, yes, the heat on the back of the thing is starting to bug me).
Another post about this, I'm not surprised. It really is not good enough that we can use it while getting a charge!!
I've not used the charger that came with it, but have used the same chargers for my iPad 2...
The wall chargers are the same.

None of the iPads ever charged when the screen was on and plugged to a computer or hub USB. Not enough power provided this way to both, charge and run the screen.

I think it is a problem that the iPad cannot charge while using it plugged into the wall. It is clearly due to the larger power requirements for the display.
Workaround: It charged a little from the wall while in use after I dimmed the screen.
Better workaround...supply a charger with enough output to correctly charge the battery while using the product in any capacity it is capable of (full brightness, WIFI and 4G on, etc.). If 10W (same as iPad 1 and 2) isn't enough for this ipad with a much higher capacity battery and power requirement, then ship it with a 15 or 20W charger!

Not true. I sit here with my iPad 2 plugged into the back of my iMac 27 (2011 model) and am watching the battery charge go from 38% to 41 % in the last 20 minutes, WITH the iPad ON AND at full brightness.
The same problem here. This is the second time I charged the iPad and I took 6 hours! We definitely need a new charger!
There is nothing wrong (well...this is an Apple technical design flaw but not a real issue) with your new iPads. It takes up to 8 hours for a full charge and while being used, the battery capacity can go down by 2% or even slightly more every 10 minutes...at 100% display brightness.
I think there seems to be a different experience from many owners here because people are using the new iPad at different brightness levels.
So let it be clear: The new iPad gets warm (almost hot), charging the battery from slightly over 0% to 100% talkes almost 8 hours and while using it at 100% display brightness, battery capacity even drops by up to 2% every 10 minutes. There is nothing wrong, this is just how the new iPad is supposed to behave, as sad as this may sound.
I have the same problem but was able to get a charge while using with a dimmed screen. However, I just charged my iPad for 6 hours and it only went up 50% in battery (using the charger that came in the box, with the iPad on airplane mode). This is a massive problem, as I need this for work and rarely am home for more than 6 hours to charge it. Charge has been this slow since I got it last Firday. Thinking there may be a problem with my iPad.
This is a big oversight. It is not ok to take 8 hours for a full charge. Please supply (or sell us) a fast charger.
Guys, hold your horses, I think I have found a solution.
In order to adequately charge my new iPad, I've had to mod my Macbook Pro charger cable in order to retrofit a Dock Connector on the end of it. THAT provides enough juice to tame this beast. Now it takes only four hours to charge AND i can use it while charging.
If you want instructions on how to do this, get at me.

Retrofitting a Macbook Pro charger to work with a dock connector is hardly a solution, but it does add support to the theory that 10W isn't enough to charge the new iPad quickly or while running.
Now, if you were to start manufacturing and selling retrofitted chargers, THAT would be a solution! 🙂

Just think...3,000,000 ipads times, say, $5 profit on each charger, that's $15MIL, easy. Don't forget who's your partner, now! 😉
I got my new iPad Friday 16th. I AM using the charger that came with the New iPad and I have always closed every app when I'm not using them to save battery life. I noticed Sunday that my new iPad was at 67%, so using the charger that came with the new iPad, I plugged the adapter into the wall outlet. The only app I had open was Notes. For nearly 3 hours I was working at my desk and entering data into the app, not constantly on and burning up the keys. In fact, I had to wake the device every time I had to enter data. I did this for almost 3 hours and noticed that it had only charged to 72%!! And for the record, in addition to always closing apps I'm not using, I never have my display at full brightness and I dim it whenever I can, especially at night. I never plug it into my MacBook Air to charge it either, only the wall outlet. So no one can tell me I'm using a lot of power at one time.
Not only does the iPad not charge much, if at all, while in use, the adapter does get hot. Not warm, but hot.
This is not just ridiculous, but for Apple to not think that with all of the upgrades to this iPad with the display, battery, CPU and more, a more powerful charger would be necessary, is ludacris. For a device that cost me $700+ that cost Apple a tiny fraction of that to have made in China, which sold over 3 Million units in 3 days, is just not acceptable.
With all of the technology that went into this ipad, I SHOULD NOT have to NOT USE my $700 device in order to fully charge the battery. I bought this iPad to help me be more efficient, not to have to wait to use it.
Apple, are you listening?? We want an adapter/charger that is made to charge the device just as efficiently as all of the other Apple devices. How difficult could that be??? A fix soon would be appreciated by millions!
My advice to those who haven't yet bought/ordered the new iPad (3) is, DON'T. Wait until the charger and over heating issues are resolved.
