The New iPad will not sync all photo's

I picked up the new iPad yesterday at the Apple store and am having a problem getting it to sync all of my photo library.

Im using iTunes on Windows 7 to sync the "My Pictures" folder to the iPad.

It will sync some but not all of the folders in the "My Pictures". I have deleted the "iPod Photo Cache" folder, that did not help.

I have 2 iPhones and 2 older iPad 1's which sync the photo's just fine.

I've had this issue since I've brought my iPad and finally decided to call Apple today, they initially got me to reset my synch history which did improve it a little however they then got me to reset my ipad which did nothing apart from waste an hour.

In the end I was having particular issues with 4 folders and the apple guy said that basically the synch was encoutering a corrupt file and stopping (even though they have always synched fine on my iPhone). In the end I spent some time messing with the files and I've found 2 solutions that worked for me:

1. I removed the metadata from the images (I used a freeware program called BatchPurifier (from downloads.com) which solved the issues I was having with 1 folder.

2. The other 3 folders contained some scanned images which I found out were huge in physical size (not just MB), so I reduced the size of these using another freeware program FastStone Photo Resizer (same site) and got them down to around 3200*2300 (they were previously up to 12,000 * 5,000)

Now all my Photos synch perfectly 🙂 (I'm a Windows 7 user with a 3rd gen 64GB iPad)

Your comments about corrupts files got me thinking again.

Testing small selection of photo (working (1) folder at a time),

re-export them from Lightroom 4.0 in various file type extensions.

the result is Jpeg file extension is hit or miss when it comes to SYNC to new iPad.

(sometimes it will be pic #1, other times it will be pic #8,

that the iPad folder shows a duplicate photo or a "square" which the iPad isn't able to view, so it just shows the next available photo)

Another thing that I noticed is that while exporting original raw (to new folder for testing Sync),

iTunes actually throws a flag, let you know that img # xyz could not be imported.

What I found for me, is that DNG of the same file works 100% for (6) folders so far.

Anyhow just a working theory, gonna keep going until I hit a wall.

I also believe that anytime there is a "file" that the iTunes does not know how to transfer,

it will mess up the entire library.

Oddly enough, the erasing the metadata didn't do anything more me,

maybe my metadata was not corrupt like yours?

I've been browsing this thread and wondering if folks are using Photo Stream but are confused about how PhotoStream works.

My understanding is that it is designed only to show the most recent 1000 photos. (See the Photo Stream FAQ at:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486

There's a topic named "How many Photo Stream photos are stored on my devices..."

If you don't want to use PhotoStream and would rather go back to the old method (syncing all photos via iTunes) Go to "Photos" under Settings on your iPad/iPad etc and turn Photo Stream OFF.

Now you'll need to connect your iPad to your computer, open iTunes, Select your iPad and use the Photos tab in i to determine what to sync.

Lastly, if your iPad is displaying less than 1000 photos, you should also probably check that there is enough disc space available:

Settings: General: Usage. You can even disable a few apps (there listed by size) if you want to squeeze out a little more space for photos.

John, What I'm telling you is that you DON'T have to disable all of iCloud. You can simply disable Photo Stream, your music apps books will continue to sync Wireless.

As to the 5GB limit: nothing you've purchased via the iTunes Store counts against that limit. If you've bought 20GBs of music (via iTunes) that'll be stored free of charge in the cloud. But again, watch out for your total usage - some apps especially those updated for retina display are pretty large.

Just a status report, I have managed to sync (43) folder with about 900 pics.

And this is somewhat promising, as these survived greater than 43 sync cycles without propagating corruptions.

As Stokie_Stez's tech support session have pointed out, iTunes "hits a wall" when it comes to what it preceives as an unviewable photo that it can't get iPad to display properly.

So if you try to sync the entire library of 10,000 photo you are very likely to get random shuffling of the unexpanded previews inside each folder, because you are likely to have a number of these "unviewable" that is causing the problem.

To get around it, I manually sync each folder and check for corrupted/missing photo against Lightroom 4(PC),

before I sync the next folder and build up the iPod Cache.

I also thumb to all the photo to ensure that all pics are indeed viewable without displaying the incorrect picture.

(again it is pretty easy to spot, square photo with large white borders, preview photo showing different photo when expanded, or just the number of pic sync not equal to those on the PC)

Each time I see a problem I go to my PC and delete that particular pic and sync again (in iTunes) to remove the "problem" off the iPad, then export the pic back again (with Lightroom 4) into the same folder and sync.

(this essentially remove the pic from the iPod Cache and back again)

If you just uncheck the folder to remove and recheck it to add, it will just pull the same problem off the iPod Cache, as nothing is modified.

I did run into about 15 or so of these "unviewable" among my (43) folders, but each time remedied.

Whatever you do, don't delete the iPod Cache (after the initial reset).

I am led to believe that the problem lies within iTunes, because if you kill off iPod Cache and rebuild your library using the above methods, a random photo become "unviewable" and you have to start from scratch again.

I recommend making a new folder for syncing to your 3rd gen iPad, that way the iPod Cache it is separated from other group of Apple devices.

All in all, this is all very tedious, it isn't entirely clear why auto sync works for iPad 2 but not this new iPad.

Like many, I have been struggling with this issue on the new iPad, though it has never been an issue on our iPad2 or iPhone4s with the same set of photos. After trying what seemed like every suggestion I came across within the 16 pages of this thread, I called Apple tonight and spend 2 hours trying a host of other suggestions they had. I can say after all that time; the only solution they suggested to at least my issue was to resize all my photos to less than 3,000 pixels on either axis. For me at least, it was never a corrupt file or anything like that. It would seem that there is an issue with iTunes+new iPad when dealing with photos greater than 3,000 pixels in either dimension. Curious to see if that helps anyone else?

Hi

Ipad 3 64GB 4g and OS Lion - all current updates to itunes & OS done as at 23 April.

Like many others I have had the photo syncing problem and have seen all sorts of "fixes". Anyway I did the following and so far have had success in all syncs (over 20).

1) rebuilt/repaired IPhoto Library and rebuilt thumbnails.

2) after this I deleted ipod photo cache in iphoto.

3) Reboot and put Ipad in airplane mode

4) Plug in Ipad3 (note Itunes not set to auto sync)

5) With itunes syncing photos from iphoto - I have had problems syncing multiple albums - this time i synced individual events - 1 at a time.

6) repeated the sync process with over 25 different iphoto events, adding one at a time - no crashes, all synced ok!!

Note I have not resized any photos in iphoto or have done anything with photstream

I hope that this may work for some people.

I too am frustrated by the issue. Using Windows 7, 64 bit and the latest iTunes I lose 40% of my high resolution images in the transfer. Using a mac with 10.7.3 Lion all images transfer ok.... It's not necessarily an image size problem, and the images that do transfer differ each time.

It's frustrating not to have any idea of when the problem will be resolved, but I suspect it will require a new edition of iTunes 64 bit...
