The New iPad will not sync all photo's

I picked up the new iPad yesterday at the Apple store and am having a problem getting it to sync all of my photo library.

Im using iTunes on Windows 7 to sync the "My Pictures" folder to the iPad.

It will sync some but not all of the folders in the "My Pictures". I have deleted the "iPod Photo Cache" folder, that did not help.

I have 2 iPhones and 2 older iPad 1's which sync the photo's just fine.

I already tried photo stream for PC and it worked the same way as using Itunes. It started copying photos over and then it just stopped and I couldn't get it to transfer any more photos. That is why I read about using Itunes. I always use Itunes to download music and transfer music to my Ipods. Thought it would be a breeze. Only synced about 10 photos before it just stopped and I have 200 photos to sync. The arrow circle kept spinning looking like it was syncing, but the rest of the photos never got transferred to the Ipad.

Using Apple products is not that difficult to figure out. It's frustrating that when I know I am doing everything correctly, it still doesn't work!

I'm guessing I may have the same problem with PhotoSync, since I believe it is the Ipad that has the bug. From reading the Internet, many people (Apple pros) are having the same problem with the new Ipad.

I also removed what photos transferred over because they were in the wrong order. Kind of hard to show people vacation photos when they are not in the correct order. That will be a whole other issue if I ever get this one resolved.

I am going to try a reboot to the Ipad tonight, since I never did one before. Had to look up on the Internet on how to do it. Maybe it will reset something and clear out the cache.

Hello Peter,

I use a desktop computer with Windows XP SP3 and a laptop with Windows 7. My iPad is 3rd generation IOS 6 and the connections are by cable rather than wireless or cloud. I have a good technical background having worked through up from DOS, linear programing, 4Tran etc up generations - not without problems but I could always solve them or find a work-around. This is my first introduction to syncing. All I want to do is transfer images from my computer to my iPad in the sequental file order they are on my computer. I am told by Apple that this is impossible as embedded metadata is used instead of alpha/numeric file order since IOS2.

If I had known this I would not have bought the iPad.

I was told by Apple Support that an App called CopyTrans Photo could do the job for me. I purchased it and found it had the same problem. On contacting Copy Trans this is their reply:

"Thank you for your purchase and I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Please note that due to Apple limitations, at this time, it is not

possible to arrange photos in alphabetical order with CopyTrans Photo.

As we are working hard to satisfy our users' wishes, I will advise you

to post your suggestion at the following page:.........."

They refunded my payment in full immediately and said they would e-mail me if they can find a way to beat Apple's software restrictions - that is service!

Oh for Select, Drag and Drop to the iPad.

Kind regards,

Sgadan Ruadh.

Hi Sgadan,

yes, I have the same background, I am an old boy and have started 1971 with computer programming on an IBM 360.

And yes, Apple is very special with meta data, like you see it on all their iPods. They just use the ID3 an dif you have not maintained it correctly you are lost.

Same method is used for Photos. I am just searching the Apple support document and post the link here.

In the meantime please select 3 pictures you want to sync. Choose one with not personal private content, just choose pictures from a landscape or similar. Then let us share these pictures and I will check the meta data.

Could be I am writing a little visual basic script to adjust it, if it is "wrong" :-)

Sharing could happen via Dropbox or MS-Skydrive or similar.

What do you think ?

best regards

Peter

PS: While I was searching for the Apple Support document I have found an interesting discussion about the same sorting issue in Windows.

In this discussions they mention several methods which helped. Perhaps this will help you as well.

Title is:

HowTo Sort Photos by Name on iPad (Windows 7, etc. - For Those Frustrated)

Oct 18, 2012 1:53 PM in response to PeterOFre

PS:

Here some Apple support documents which explain the sorting on iOS devices.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221

"If you are using iPhoto or Aperture for Mac OS X, your photos automatically sort on your device in the same order in which they are sorted in iPhoto or Aperture. Changes made to the sorting of your pictures in your iPhoto or Aperture albums and events are reflected on the device after syncing.

If you are not using iPhoto or Aperture on Mac OS X, and if your device is using the latest software, it sorts photos in ascending order by the Date Modified.

Additional Information

If you are using an earlier version of iOS

iOS 4 sorts photos by the Date Taken tag of the photos. iOS 3.1.3 and earlier sort photos alphanumerically by the photos' file names."

What is not mentioned in this support document is the method to sort my picture name only. In the following mentioned link (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3380341?start=165&tstart=0) you find on page 12 the methods to make this happen.

But be warned, it is not a good method because it will make the Exif data useless.

The apple method to sort by Exif Date is the best if the Exif date is correct. If you have a wrong date because your camera date was wrong, then you need to correct the exif date and all is fine.

That issues are not Apple specific, I am fighting with it since I have started with digital cameras back in 1998.

Hi Peter,

I am the one Sgadan was refering to in his comment ... and to answer your question, I have the iPhone 4 and the iPad 3gen and everything was working fine, syncing my photos correctly, up until about 2 version-upgrades ago ... now, neither Apple products will sync. I find it annoying that I might have to purchase a program to do something Apple should be fixing - I have heard about getting that program before ...

I have tried uninstalling iTunes, unchecking the box in iTunes to un-sync photos, etc.

When I connect my phone to my PC, all the usual windows popup regarding pictures that I have taken, it says it is saving them, but the question is where? I have yet to be able to find them - even doing a computer wide search using the photo name that I can see if I tunnel down thru my iPhone (when connected to my PC) to the folder with the pics ...

Hi phscheuer,

you are right, Apple should give a nice user experience without additional apps and at least in my case they deliver that good experience.

But you need to accept their way of thinking, i.e. you cannot delete pictures you have synced from PC. Or you cannot sort by name and the name is not displayed at all.

I have tried out several programs like Photosync or PhotoManagerPro just to see what advantages it will give.

If you want to have almost full control I would recommend PhotoManagerPro, here you can sync without iTunes and use an FTP client with a sync feature. In the Mac world they use CyberDuck.

OK, I understand that you have a) issues with iTunes syncing and b) you do not know where your pictures are when you connect your iPad to your Windows PC and save it.

b) is a normal Windows Function and has nothing to do with Apple.

When I do it with my PC and iPad I see the MS Word, Photoshop and MS Scanner and Camera Assistent in the popup.

If I choose the assistent I am able to select picture and clicking on next button I can define the target folder.

But you can just go to your normal windows explorer (not IE explorer) and see your iPad picture folder. With normal copy and past you can access your pictures.

Please try that first before we can go to a) which could be more difficult.

I am using Windows XP and iPad 3 with iOS6. I could try it with my other PC with Windows 7, if you are using windows 7. Please let me know.

best regards

Peter

Hello Peter,

Thank you for your reply and kind offer, you certainly earn top marks for helping others in distress. I have decided to continue the way I am working with a single sync and add to new folders with the Transfer app. It more or less lets me do what I need to do but I don't use iPods or sync into the clouds, I keep my feet on the ground.

I need all the EXIF Meta data intact on my images as I use them commercially and in exhibitions. I think someone will come up with an app which recognises file alpha/numeric file names and allows them to be sequenced in a sensible way. I discovered that re-oriented images (portrait to landscape) will change the sequence. I think that Apple using "iTunes" to deal with images gives a clue to what causes the problems, ie. a tweeked program to do what it was not originally designed to do. Multy-use tools seldom work!

One of the problems with this thread is that there are so many angles to the sequencing of images on the iPad. Some contributers are using Macs while others are on Windows. Some sync from and to iPhones and iPods etc.without going through a computer, while others are complaining about the syncing process itself.

I'll bow out but keep my eye on the thread in case someone comes up with an answer - even Apple themselves?

Kind regards,

Sgadan.

Oct 20, 2012 8:45 AM in response to Sgadan Ruadh

Hi Sgadan,

Yes, keeping all Exif is important for me as well. And sorting by name is a special case which is (currently) not covered by Apple.

PhotoManagerPro is an App which support that. You mentioned CopyTransfer, but it just helps you to transfer the pictures.

It has nothing to do with Sorting.

The Cloud Feature = Photostream is just used to support easy sharing between iOS and Mac devices. I do not use it for normal syncing.

If you want to correct the sorting sequence, just download the free exiftool and exiftoolgui. Unpack and copy both exe files in same folder.

Then start exiftoolgui and check the Exif date and compare it with file dates.

If not correct you can adjust.

Every good photo tool should do the same. On a Mac you can use iPhoto and Aperture. On a PC you can use Lightroom or ACDSee for sure. Yes, ACDSee can do that, have just double checked.

You need such a tool anyway, if you are travelling and forgot to adjust your camera date :-).

Do not hesitate to answer again, we normal users should help each other.

Best regards

Peter

Hi PeterOFre,

Well, I am happy to say that once I deleted all the partially loaded photos and rebooted the Ipad and plugged it into my Windows Vista Laptop, the photos began streaming from Itunes immediately. It went pretty fast and all the photos are in date order (which is a good thing). They even loaded into the folder that I set up. I am very happy that that is all it was. Kind of mad at myself for wasting so many hours on this in the beginning! I know now that whether I am dealing with PC or Apple products, they are both temperamental!
