iPad 3rd gen photos won't sync

Problem if I try to sync photos to my iPad 3 64gb 4G. If I select some or all of my 7300 photos, iTunes either converts a few (9 to 15 pics) syncs them and skips the rest or skips them all entirely , the ones that do sync look stunning on the retina screen though.

I never had this issue with my old iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and my current 4S or my iPad 1 & 2.

I also tried deleting the photo cache multiple times, restoring the iPad 3 from an iCloud backup as well as a slightly older backup through iTunes, I even reinstalled the old iTunes 10.5 and I still had the same photo sync issue.

Yet my iPhone 4S 64gb is syncing my photos through iTunes via a cable & WiFi just fine.

I even tried copying all 7300 photos to an external drive and syncing them from there, hoping a completely different location may work. Managed 150 odd shots before skipping the rest, this problem is completely random.

Out of those shots a few were the wrong image, the thumbnail image was right but when opened full the image was from a completely different folder

I even tried this morning setting my iPad 3 up as a new device instead of restoring from iTunes or iCloud, synced only my photos and nothing else but I had the same issue so this is definitely a bug somewhere, I suspect iTunes.

Again, same photos and I have no issue syncing 7300 shots to my iPhone 4S.

Everything else syncs to the iPad 3 just fine and runs perfectly.

I'm wondering if it is something to do with either

  • disk space and cache
  • files itunes/ipad doesn't understand

The original ipod photo cache on my machine was 30Gb. After moving it to a different drive, my C drive was very badly fragmented. Also I recieved one warning after it did work (deleted ipod cache) as I had a photoshop file in one folder. Synced another folder this morning and it seemed to work OK.

I don't think that's the issue because I deleted the entire iPod cache, defragmented and then tried to sync 10 pictures in another folder. It synced 1 picture the first time, 3 the second, then only 2 the third (1 picture was erased for no reason) . Tried my iPad 2 after the third try with my iPad 3 and worked perfectly. There is something wrong with either the IPad 3 64GBLTE or ITunes when it comes to syncing with the iPad 3.

Hopefully apple fixes this, it's irritating when the main selling point was increased clarity when those very same clear pictures only are are able to be seen on the iPad 2.

Replying to get in on this. It seems photos over a certain resolution are less likely to sync. Though I can add photos one at a time to a folder I am syncing and they will all sync eventually. If I add more than one, it's a crap shoot. Deleting cache and resyncing doesn't help. 100% of photos sync to iPhone 4S with same IOS version.

iPad 3 64gb Wifi.

Looking forward to a fix. Thanks!

I too have spent hours on the phone with Apple customer support. MY 64gb 4GLTE Ipad3 won't sync photo's correctly. All the usual symptons, during the photo sync, it hangs up after a few pictures are transferred, then the sync finishes incomplete. When looking at the pictures the images will shift. Tech support had me erase my ipad and reboot every which way, so it took hours to figure out it was probably an iTunes 10.6 issue. They have filed a report and I should hear back in 3-4 days from them, I will post any findings from them here.

I just got this response from Apple Tech Support:

"I had a fellow advisor tell me he resolved another callers similiar issue, He said he simply took a phot with the iPad and tried it again and it WORKED!!! So after the restore please take a picture withthe iPad and try it again. Uggh. If you would call or email me with the results.

I only had time to erase all pictures, take a photo and try to sync... Later I will do the full restore, but figured I would pass it along. If anyone tries this and has better results please post them!

I tried just snapping a photo using the iPad 3. It was added to a new folder "Camera Roll" created alongside my other partially synced folders in the Photos app. However, when I then synced with iTunes, no joy. I'm still missing about 1/3 of my photos. I'm not going to waste time on these quack remedies from Apple. They need to FIX the problem!

I also am having the same problem on the New iPad. I only can sync a few photos within an album. The number is different each time and only once have I transferred 100% of the images in a single folder (album). The suggestion to delete teh phot cache did not help the problem. My iPhone 4 still can transfer correctly, so it certainly does appear to be an iTunes issue with the New iPad. I did "build" the New iPad as a new device, not a restored backup from my iPad 2.

I agree that Apple will (probably) find and fix this issue, but it does make you wonder what the Apple Software testers were doing prior to the iPad release. With all of the hype about the new display, you would think someone would have tried to transfer photos using iTunes at least once.
