iPad 3rd gen photos won't sync

Problem if I try to sync photos to my iPad 3 64gb 4G. If I select some or all of my 7300 photos, iTunes either converts a few (9 to 15 pics) syncs them and skips the rest or skips them all entirely , the ones that do sync look stunning on the retina screen though.

I never had this issue with my old iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and my current 4S or my iPad 1 & 2.

I also tried deleting the photo cache multiple times, restoring the iPad 3 from an iCloud backup as well as a slightly older backup through iTunes, I even reinstalled the old iTunes 10.5 and I still had the same photo sync issue.

Yet my iPhone 4S 64gb is syncing my photos through iTunes via a cable & WiFi just fine.

I even tried copying all 7300 photos to an external drive and syncing them from there, hoping a completely different location may work. Managed 150 odd shots before skipping the rest, this problem is completely random.

Out of those shots a few were the wrong image, the thumbnail image was right but when opened full the image was from a completely different folder

I even tried this morning setting my iPad 3 up as a new device instead of restoring from iTunes or iCloud, synced only my photos and nothing else but I had the same issue so this is definitely a bug somewhere, I suspect iTunes.

Again, same photos and I have no issue syncing 7300 shots to my iPhone 4S.

Everything else syncs to the iPad 3 just fine and runs perfectly.

Same problem here!

We have 2 iPhone 4S, an iPad2 and an iPad3 (all 64Gb versions) running the latest iOS and iTunes versions on Windows 7 64bit.

8,473 photos sync happily to the iPhones and the iPad2, but the iPad 3 stubbornly refuses to take more than about 10% of the photos. I've restored from backup, rebuilt, deleted iPod Photo Caches etc.

Very disappointed after 20+ hours of fighting it!

Any more ideas?

Same here.

Have been struggling for over a week now.

Tried everything mentioned here + copied my photos to a different computer where there had never been iTunes installed. Windows 7 64bit, latest version of iTunes installed, iPad restored as new.

Still no luck. It does about 200 photos (at leat it says it's doing it) and then jumps through all the rest up to 11 000 like fast forwarded.

Another silly thing I tried today is to change all folder names to remove country specific letters (Polish in this case). Started sync again and so far it's gone up to 2150 photos and still doing it (at least it looks naturally).

Funny that photos in iTunes are no longer optimized as it used to be when syncing iPad 2.

i found a work around.

it seems to work sometimes

make sure ipad is not connected.

take a picture using the ipads camera.

now connect it, uncheckmark sync pictures,

it will ask to to remove all pictures, yes. it simply removing those on ipad.

once all is removed, now sync those picture folders you want.

once sync is done, verify, it should have synced all the pictures.

I did not remove or delete my cache, like many suggest.

it seems the problem is itunes wont sync properly if the camera roll is not setup propely which is done when you take a picture for the first time.

hopefully this will help.

I have the same problem. 64MB iPad 3 4G AT&T and Windows 7 64bit PC. I spend Friday, Saturday, and Sunday trying to figure this out. Here is a short list of the things I tried:

1. Restored firmware and set up as new iPad and immediately trying to sync photos.

2. Copied all pics to a new folder on the computer.

3. Made sure all included photos were .jpg

4. Did successful album sync with 2 iPad 2's and 2 iPhone 4's all with iOS 5.1

5. Deleted all ipod photo caches (repeatedly)

6. uninstalled/reinstalled itunes and all Apple software from computer using instructions from tech support.

7. Did complete computer virus scan using Norton

8. Disabled Norton Antivirus

9. Opened each photo one by one to make sure none corrupted

10. Made sure Windows 7 had all latest updates.

11. I even tried the take a picture with the iPad trick

Has anybody tried exchanging for a new iPad 3?

The most interesting part is the syncs work fine with all my other iOS 5.1 devices. What is different?

I also noticed somebody else mentioned using a Canon SLR. My old pictures also sync fine, but my newer pics are Canon t3i.

I eliminated all my photos from recent Sony Alpha SLT-A55VL and Canon t3i cameras from an album and the rest of the 917 photos from several different cameras over the years synchronized fine. I hope that helps, Apple engineers. I will say the sync still took longer with the iPad 3 than with 2 iPad 2's, an iPhone 4s, an iPhone 4, and even an iPad 1; all of which were able to sync photos before the adjustment. What is different?

So,let me get this right.....The New iPad, with the improved display, will only sync images shot on a low resolution camera? Apple cannot be serious about this situation. I understand that the troubleshooting and solution process might take a little time, but how about a public acknowledgement of the problem?

I have used a third party App, "Photosync", to work around the download issue, so there is/are alternate methods to transfer hi-res images to the New iPad, however I tend to like the iTunes process (when it works) to allow support of multiple iOS devices.

I'm having the exact same issue with my iPad3. I still have the original ipad and it is synching photos just fine, and the photo sync works with my iphone 4 and even ipod. There seems to be no pattern to what it will transfer over, and it changes which ones it shifts over each time I delete the cache folder on the computer. It is a mix of photos from high and low resolution cameras, so I don't think that is the issue. Seems like a very widespread software issue, so please fix!!!

Apple will never admit to a fault or problem. its takes a very very big deal for apply to publicy accept a mistake.

that being said, you gotta wait for apple to release an udpated itunes.

i sorta fixed the problem by taking a picture with the cam, it now syncs the pictures but the problem is when i click on the thumbnail it loads the picture then right away skips it, odd.

so it still has issues.

i've got 4 friends with ipad 3 and they got exact same issue.

one friend took it the genius bar, they spent an hour messing with it. he told me they erased it, setup it up fresh and all that stuff and it still failed.

he said apple was aware of the problem and told him to wait for a fix.

so i expect any day, apple will release an updated itunes.

Hmm,

thanks for this ninja.spirit

I have arranged a phone meeting with Apple Support next Monday.

I'm sure they will not come up with any solution then but just wanted them to have a record of this in case this is related to a hardware problem (which probably isn't ) in the future.

This is going to influence Apple's reputation if they don't fix it soon.

I spent several hours on the phone with AppleCare. The last guy who called had me go through a bunch of steps logging the results and sending him information about my computer. He said unofficially it looks like the Codec (whatever that is) in iTunes has a bug. The pictures sent from the computer to the iPad 3 are higher resolution (bigger files) than what go to the older devices. They are converted first which is why there is a iPod Photo Cache. The same set of pictures was much smaller on my iPad 2 than what was projected to be on the iPad 3. He suggested it might be Windows 7 64-bit computers affected. Has anybody had this problem with a different operating system?

Short version: They are aware of the problem and are trying to track down the bug to fix in a iTunes update. No ETA. I feel your pain.
