iPad 3rd gen photos won't sync

Problem if I try to sync photos to my iPad 3 64gb 4G. If I select some or all of my 7300 photos, iTunes either converts a few (9 to 15 pics) syncs them and skips the rest or skips them all entirely , the ones that do sync look stunning on the retina screen though.

I never had this issue with my old iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and my current 4S or my iPad 1 & 2.

I also tried deleting the photo cache multiple times, restoring the iPad 3 from an iCloud backup as well as a slightly older backup through iTunes, I even reinstalled the old iTunes 10.5 and I still had the same photo sync issue.

Yet my iPhone 4S 64gb is syncing my photos through iTunes via a cable & WiFi just fine.

I even tried copying all 7300 photos to an external drive and syncing them from there, hoping a completely different location may work. Managed 150 odd shots before skipping the rest, this problem is completely random.

Out of those shots a few were the wrong image, the thumbnail image was right but when opened full the image was from a completely different folder

I even tried this morning setting my iPad 3 up as a new device instead of restoring from iTunes or iCloud, synced only my photos and nothing else but I had the same issue so this is definitely a bug somewhere, I suspect iTunes.

Again, same photos and I have no issue syncing 7300 shots to my iPhone 4S.

Everything else syncs to the iPad 3 just fine and runs perfectly.

Had a replacement iPad 3 due to a dead pixel appearing. Tried syncing my photos again but the same issue, this is definitely an iTunes issue.

Also since deleting my photo cache and syncing all my 7300 photos to my iPhone 4s, 95% are in the correct album but now some are duplicated but in a completely different album.

Will be glad when this annoying bug is fixed.

THis is it. As before I was unable to sync photos, Win 7 64 bit. I removed photos by syncing with no photos selected, deleted cache folder then resynced but this time only selecting a small number of folders/photos at a time. If too many are selected it hangs (iTunes problem) but if you then select a small folder with not too many photos as the next folder it will pick up the ones missed.

BY the end I had all my photos correctly synched but Apple need to do a fix with iTunes promptly to get around this. As files it prepares for the new retina display as significantly larger than before, considerably more space is consumed. When they are writing this fix in iTunes, my suggestion would also be to consider having some optional levels of compression selectable to allow for different circumstances/wishes of different users. Some with large collections may want to compress more to fit them all on their iPad, whilst others will rate the quality as the key & just be more selective of which folders they synch.

Everyone on this forum should call Apple customer care and complain about this problem. If they can't help you, and we know they can't, ask them to escalate the problem to the engineers. They are still telling me this is a minor problem given that 3mm iPad 3's have been sold. It seems to be exclusive to Windows 7 64 bit users with large photo libraries.

I have painstakingly gotten half of my library synced, by removing all photos, turning off the photo stream, taking a picture on the device and then adding photos in batches of 3000 or less at first, but then I had to do really small amounts at a time and still can't get them all loaded.

Using iTunes to upload photos and music is a royal pain. Look at the frustration caused by this process.

I have spent a few days trying to upload all my photos. No one should have to endure this. On the first day NO photos would sync. I have iPads 1 & 2 that didn't have this problem. I got about 50 photos on the new iPad 3 via a wireless photo manager. It doesn't detect any more photos.

Twice the device indicated it was syncing all 11000 photos but they didn't appear. A bar at the bottom of the photos screen was zipping along as there is no possible way they could be uploaded in a minute. Some times the orange bar indicates 9 Gb of photos and sometimes 36 Gb! My album contains 18 Gb of photos. ITunes indicates it is syncing photos but hangs. Twice it indicated it was syncing the individual photos but hung on 1 or 2!

Finally got my iPad to sync perhaps 100 out of over 11000 photos then it hangs. I have reinstalled iTunes 64 but the problem persists. I visited an Apple store but the expert wasn't aware of any problem so couldn't help.

I am not going to keep repeating syncing because it is either stupid or crazy to do so!

I like the iPads but will buy the Samsung Galaxy 11.6 inch when it is released. ITunes ***** big time. It isn't good enough for such a wonderful device.

despite this glaring flaw i would not buy any other tablet. i think the ipad is leagues ahead of others.

i spoke to my friend and his ipad syncs up perfectly and we got same os.

all i can think is i have hires images, i shoot with a 16mp camera and his pictures are from an iphone 4s, so perhaps its something to do with size of image.

more frustrating is the fact apple wont admit issue and more frsutrating is the looooong wait in waiting for apple to release an update which quite frankly should have already been done by now.

If the Galaxy 11.6 has a screen with more resolution and uses the Android system to upload files then I am very interested. ITunes is not a program I want to HAVE to use. Too annoying, restricting and frustrating.

In addition I am reluctant to install upgrades to operating systems because on three separate occasions the iPad was restored and I had to download ALL my files and apps and many didn't install until I searched for them. I lost all the groups of apps I had on my home page. Thanks, Apple!

Photos on the iPads do not upload full size. That isn't good enough, either. When I zoom into my photos they should still remain sharp.

There is no official acknowledgement of a problem from Apple. Luckily I still have my other iPads to show people my photos. Btw, the colours on the new iPad are more accurate which is mainly why I bought one.

great news folks

today apple released an updated Itunes

and i'm happy to say it fixes the problem.

i was able to sync every single picture.

i was able to browse each picture it synced with no issues, no skipping or any of those issues.

it took longer than i hoped but apple always comes thru, at least it did today with this known issue at release.

i'm unable to verify by how much it shrinks my images or if it does. i use a 16mp camera and save final image to a jpeg at max quality so i end up with 12 to 16mb images.

all i can say is they look fantastic and syncs flawless.

so if ya not done it yet, download n install the latest itunes 🙂

I just confirmed with apple tech support the issue is the dimension of photos, anything over 3072 will not sync. I handpicked a couple folders with smaller dimensions and it worked perfect and then picked a couple with higher over 3072 and it froze again. So for people like me with high quality photos need to wait for software update. To see the dimension of photos open a folder and right click mouse and select content and it will tell you dimensions of photos.

I also dont see an updated software in itunes? Hopefully ninja.spirit is right that they released update but in my itunes it says I have latest software.

thanks and let's hope this resolves issue finally!!

Just tried the latest iTunes 10.6.1, for me it made no difference 😠

If I sync some of the smaller dimension photos (around 12mp) it syncs all photos in a particular folder but then misses one.

I even tried uninstalling iTunes, reinstalling, then restarting the PC and iPad 3, deleted the photo cache and tried syncing my photos still the same issue as in my original post.

Once again my other iOS devices fully sync just fine.

My photos range from 1mp to 24mp.
