iPad 3rd gen photos won't sync

Problem if I try to sync photos to my iPad 3 64gb 4G. If I select some or all of my 7300 photos, iTunes either converts a few (9 to 15 pics) syncs them and skips the rest or skips them all entirely , the ones that do sync look stunning on the retina screen though.

I never had this issue with my old iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and my current 4S or my iPad 1 & 2.

I also tried deleting the photo cache multiple times, restoring the iPad 3 from an iCloud backup as well as a slightly older backup through iTunes, I even reinstalled the old iTunes 10.5 and I still had the same photo sync issue.

Yet my iPhone 4S 64gb is syncing my photos through iTunes via a cable & WiFi just fine.

I even tried copying all 7300 photos to an external drive and syncing them from there, hoping a completely different location may work. Managed 150 odd shots before skipping the rest, this problem is completely random.

Out of those shots a few were the wrong image, the thumbnail image was right but when opened full the image was from a completely different folder

I even tried this morning setting my iPad 3 up as a new device instead of restoring from iTunes or iCloud, synced only my photos and nothing else but I had the same issue so this is definitely a bug somewhere, I suspect iTunes.

Again, same photos and I have no issue syncing 7300 shots to my iPhone 4S.

Everything else syncs to the iPad 3 just fine and runs perfectly.

This problem has bedeviled me on two different iPads, and I have been on the phone with AppleCare numerous times to no avail. After much trial & error, here is what finally worked for me. I am syncing a new iPad (3rd gen) 64GB WiFi to a Windows 7 Ultimate PC running iTunes 10.6.1.7. Note that in my case I was trying to sync photos one way from my PC to my iPad, so I was not concerned about preserving any original content on the iPad. If you are concerned about this, I would recommend making sure that all of your original content is backed up somewhere other than iTunes before trying this. Also, all my videos are AVCHD, which the iPad can’t play, so I didn’t try to sync videos, only photos.

  1. Connect iPad via USB
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi sync (select your iPad on the left side of iTunes, then click the “Summary” tab, deselect “Sync this iPad over WiFi”)
  3. Sync
  4. Deselect “Sync Photos” (select your iPad on the left side of iTunes, then click the “Photos” tab)
  5. Sync
  6. Disconnect iPad
  7. Hard reset device (hold power & home, keep holding until apple shows up on screen). If you want to be paranoid here, you could reboot the PC too.
  8. In iTunes, Edit->Preferences->Devices->Reset Sync History
  9. Quit iTunes
  10. Clear contents of “iPod Photo Cache” directory (in My Pictures)
  11. Restart iTunes (check task manager to make sure it is fully quit before restarting)
  12. Plug in iPad via USB
  13. Sync
  14. Select “Sync Photos”, deselect “Include videos”, select “Selected folders”, and then don’t select any individual folders (may need to say OK to removing photos from device (AT YOUR OWN RISK))
  15. Apply & Sync
  16. Select 1 folder for syncing
  17. Apply & Sync
  18. Confirm that all photos synced
  19. If all photos synced, select additional folders as desired & Apply. If not, call AppleCare, I’m out of suggestions.
  20. Enable WiFi sync, if desired

Good luck!

Still not working for me... Time to wait for an official release where we don't need to do 20 steps and hope it works. Spent way too much time and aggrevation on this. It does seem to be the higher res pictures that create the issue. I am not convinced it is entirely iTunes, as my iPod will say "syncing xxx of xxxx" and freeze. So I am not sure where the log jam is that causes iTunes to skip the music sync step.

Just after I sent that comment Apple customer support called me to tell me about the iTunes update. They also suggested I add a column called "dimensions" when looking at my photo's in windows explorer and the issue occurs when trying to sync pictures over 3000 in length or width. I told them de-resing pictures was neither a practical nor acceptable solution. The selling point of the iPad3 is the screen resolution. Additionally, pictures taken with an iPhone 4S are over 3000, so that makes no sense.

I also asked that they at least admit there is a problem, so I can feel like it is being addressed.

Ok. I did the 20 steps above. I use adobe photoshop and my 15,000 photos are in about a hundred albums to keep them organized. The first album I added was fairly large, 1,300 or so. Then I went back and added 10 albums which added together was about same size. iTunes crashed. I pulled it back up and added 1 album and resynced. Worked.I

Continued to add just one or two albums at a time, seems to be working. Frustrating, but I think iTunes software is getting overwhelmed if the library is too large.

It worked for me, but only if I synced just a few albums (files) at a time. I do think the problem is iTunes is not working when a large amount of photos are involved. Instead of selecting sync all photos, select albums. Start with one, then add one or two at a time. For me, after fifty or so syncs I will be done. By the way, I did need to restart my iPad to see the photos. Hopefully they will fix this. Good luck.

All in all, this is still a strange bug. The iTunes update did nothing to improve the photo sync for me. I have repeatedly tried transferring one album at a time, each time with fewer than 100 images. The transfer fails to get all of the images 100% of the time. The actual number of images transferred varies each time, sometimes as low as only one image. From my experience, i am very surprised that anyone is reporting that this update actually helps. The response from ps1962 does not make it clear if he/she actually was successful getting all "50" transfer groups to work. Also, the need to restart the iPad is not my experience (whatever number of images did make it across are visible immediately and a restart does not change the number, for me).
