Airplay problems with BBC iPlayer (Global) on iPad2 and ATV5.0

Hi,

I've just upgraded to ATV 5.0 on my ATV2 and to iOS 5.1 on my iPad2 and suddenly the Airplay option on my BBC iPlayer (Global) doesn't work properly anymore.

For months I have been watching BBC iPlayer content on ATV via iPad using the in-App Airplay icon. But now when I try that I just get a black screen with a spinning load-icon. Mirroring works, sort of, well it puts something on the screen but the audio quality is poor the video is so pixelated and choppy that it is not watchable. Mirroring generally works fine.

Does anyone have any idea why the in-App Airplay option isn't working? Any suggestions? Apart from the two platform upgrades mentioned above nothing else in my setup has changed.

Using an iPad to Airplay BBC content to an ATV may not be elegant, so before you ask why: I am outside the UK (hence the subscription to iPlayer global) and I do not want to fake my geography using a proxy server (I'd rather pay the BBC a monthly subscription than pay it to a proxy service). If there is a better way to get the iPlayer content onto my ATV I'd be glad to hear it. Maybe I am missing a trick here.

Cheers,

Rob

Sorry Bad Wolf,

I haven't upgraded the iOS on my iPad (still running 5.1) with no plans to go to 5.1.1 until I've seen on these discussion groups, if there are any nasty surprises.

So I can't help you with your question. It would help though if you stated what hardware (iOS device & ATV) you're running.

Two others (Magnus & Northesk) have reported that it's working - either of you using 5.1.1?

Cheers,

I only updated AppleTV from 4.3 to 5.0 and 5.0.1 and it works.

My Ipad is on 5.0 but my Ipod is on 5.1.1.and it works.

i don't know what fault you experienced but I got the 2 second BBC Iplayer trailer displayed on the TV and then it stopped with the error message.

Is Airplay working from all other sources like Youtube?

Well, we're running a second gen apple tv and a iPad 2. Both have the latest firmware or iOS updates. We get the two second bbc intro and then we just get a spinning wheel that doesn't stop. It's exactly what's been happening for months since this whole thing began. Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated

I've applied the apple tv and iOS updates as well as the bbc app update. AirPlay on the bbc I player is working again like it used to.

Apple tv 2 (5.0.1)

iPad 2 (5.1.1)

iPad 3 (5.1.1)

BBC (1.3.1)

Now I will re-subscribe. Obviously, only on a monthly basis, just in case it happens again.

Thanks to everyone for their help in getting this problem resolved.

Hi Dave,

like Northesk, I have now upgraded my iPhone and iPad to 5.1.1 and I have no problems. I think I now have the same set-up as you but just to be sure:

iPad 2 (iOS 5.1.1)

ATV2 (5.0.1)

also

iPhone4 (iOS 5.1.1)

For the iPlayer the in-App Airplay button now works fine. I get the spinning wheel for a few seconds and then the picture appears on my TV. Resolution, refresh rate, sound - all fine. Also the mirroring option seems to put me in the same Airplay mode (picture only on the TV and a notification on the iPad screen). Behaviour on the iPhone is almost identical.

The fact that you're seeing exactly the same behavior as before the ATV update is very odd. I don't know if there is any way to reinstall the upgrade, but I think that is what I would try to do. It sounds like it didn't get properly installed. I noticed that when I did the upgrade, I got reset to Cupertino time - I don't know why. After the upgrade was finsihed I also had to 'reboot' the ATV (i.e. power it down & back up) for it to show up in home sharing.

Good luck.

After updating IOS on the ATV and the iPhone evrything started working fine. I was a bit puzzled because the fixes came from Apple (IOS updates) and I was expecting a fix from the Beeb in the form of an update to iPlayer.

Well - finally - the Beeb issued an update to iPlayer and seem to have broken everything again! The Airplay option disappeared completely.

Luckilly I was able to downgrade iPlayer and everything works again. I am using iPlayer 1.3.1 with the latest versions of IOS on the iPhone and ATV3.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks!

Colin

Here's what I did - several times!

Delete iplayer from your app library (itunes) and your device - resync your device. It should be completely gone.

Drag "BBC iPlayer 1.3.1.ipa" out of the trash (mac) or recycle bin? To the dektop is fine.

In iTunes - select "add to library" (file menu) and navigate to the ipa file (on your desktop). Resync your device again. Done.

This (obviously) will only work if you can find the old ipa file in your trash.

Good luck!

Colin

I have complained to the Beeb about this. They just sent me a solution to a completely different issue and ignored the entire content of my email. They do that!

I'm using the following configuration:

AppleTV2: ver 5.01

iPad1: OS ver 5.1.1

iPhone 4s: OS ver 5.1.1

Updated iPlayer to 1.4.0 on the iPhone 4s and mirroring worked fine. On the strenght of this I risked updating iPlayer to 1.4.0 on the iPad.

Immediate result was not promising: sound was mirrored but not video.

In 'slight' panic switched off AppleTV and rebooted the iPad.

Audio and video mirroring now working OK.

The viewing panel of two at home has put a question mark against picture quality: it looks a bit pixellated, but network speed at the moment is lousy so the jury has refrained from making a final call as to whether or not the picture is as good as previously.
