Poor wifi reception on new iPad

I am in a hotel with my laptop and new ipad3. The laptop wifi reception is as strong as it gets, but the iPad only registers a weak signal. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions?

I live in UK and tested death grip on many a few ipads back home with quite intermittent results.

I'm now in Hong Kong for Easter holiday/business and the interesting thing here is that they don't sell the ipad 3 with 4G - ONLY with wifi. Their excuse is because there's no 4G LTE available yet, and they want to wait. Which makes no sense because Hong Kong (as a technologically advanced city) hasn't got them but UK has 4G ipads with no 4G network introduced until maybe the start of next Year.

Anyway what im getting at is the ipads here (and there are a mass abundance of places that sell them including the appld store) for demo - i've tried death grips on about 8 of them and none have really suffered as badly as the UK ones. Whether this is a coincidence or not, they seem quite fine out here. I will be gettin one some time next week and i will let you guys know the result. My family came with me and they have the ipad 2 so i will test the results out and get back to you guys.

Woody, let's be reasonable here, how can you blame Apple, and find that it is one of your complaint that you go through your 3GB of data too fast?

Think it over and try to make sense of it. Does Apple has anything to do with how fast the cellular networks are and that "you" want to download lots of data with your new 4G device and meet your max too quickly?

Wouldn't that be the same if you had any other tablet? The speed that you swallow up data is not the tablet's fault but the user.

I mean, really, does people "have" to find something to complaint about this thing all the time. How about just enjoy it and get on with your life. Your complaint should be addressed to your data provider, either ATT or Verizon, not on this forum and not toward your new ipad.

Understand my point?

Look who is here! I thought that I embarrased you enough the other day that you would not show your face around here anymore...

You realized that you are just another whiner, right?

Did you feel like an ignoramus when you looked up Little Diomede Island in Alaska and found out that you "really" can see Russia from it? Or you are too dumb to even look it up and continue with your ilogical assertion and bias toward the people of our great state?

Anyway little girl or boy, welcome back and go ahead look it up and put your own self in the corner for not doing your homework!!!! LOL.

Seriously, why are you trolling instead of trying to help users with legitimate concerns?

You probably don't realize I've been contacted by apple engineers who are trying to fix this right? It's acknowledged by apple, people aren't imagining this stuff... Grow up buddy...

I'm glad your experience has been good but that does not mean the problems being experienced by others are not true.

Most routers with the new -N ratified settings will work with the new ipad most of the time. Sure there are cases where will not, but things like "death grip", etc., really, if I hold my laptop screen with a so called "death grip" it will bleed colors at the pressure point, is that a cause for me to return my laptop then?

I cannot remember right now who makes the wifi chip on the new ipad, but most manufacturers are getting away from the old standards and trying to get as much speed as they can from the -N standard. So you must know that old routers b and g are not being tested as throughfully as the new standard, and I think that you are tech savvy enough to understand why.

I travel quite a lot also, most hotels are still using g, and some are still using the old b routers. and you also understand about repeaters at the hotels, etc., right?

It is possible that this wifi chip on the new ipad is finicky, I don't know since mine works very good in my house and I can go over 100 feet and still maintain a good signal. I have not tried the amazing death grip because that is not how I use my electronics, and so far all of my stuff, stereos, etc. have last me more years that care to remember.

Lastly, you probably know that the forums are for user based support by helping each other. Things like the wifi issues should be addressed directly to Apple by calling tech support or Apple Care, which everyone gets for 90 days free when you buy any Apple product

Trolling is a fishing term.

Anyway, if you were contacted by Apple good for you. But too bad that you and others like to say outrageous things and not expect a reaction.

So if Apple is working on a fix, why don't you tell that to everyone here trying to find a solution, instead of getting your feelings hurt by what I might say. That, would be the constructive thing to do.

And by the way, sometimes coming in a middle of a conversation is not a good thing. jsisti made a comment about Alaska regarding what Palin said about seeing Russia. This jsisti person made a comment whether I see Russia from Alaska too. So I told her from where in Alaska you can actually see Russia.

So chill out and drink some tea and stop being so overly sensitive, manup for once!

In most cases you don't have to squeeze it at all, just hold it normally in the area mentioned.

Broadcom makes the wifi chip, it is a different number in the iPad 3 than the IPad 2. Antenna placement according to break down of both devices are in different places (areas) as well. You can find this by Googling iPad 3 or 2 tear down or beak down.

Not all but some are having real issues not only with wifi, but screen colors and batteries.

That said I still like Apple stuff and own a lot of it as will as Windows, Dell, Asus, Netgear and others.

Give Apple a little tme and they will get it all worked out. If your device is bad take it back and get a replacement or a refund and wait a few more weeks and try again ( as I did after 4 tries).

Goog luck and good day ( or evening/afternoon or night as the case may be)

Just thought I'd pass it on.

@RyanLucier - I think we're all with you regarding Alaska99801's toxic behavior. It's clear he enjoys provoking others for the pleasure of it. It's a shame, because he's just polluting the respectful energy here - it's amazing how toxic one person can be.

The irony of his constant use of the phrase "man up" is that the definition of being an adult man has to do with being responsible, respectful, having inner strength - not some phony sense of macho stoicism.

I find the people on this forum are quite adult, articulate, respectful, courteous - things a man should be.

Add another one to the list. We have 3 new iPad 3rd generation tablets in our house (2 are 32GB WiFi only and 1 is 16GB WiFi only). The 16GB WiFi only seems to run fine - no WiFi connectivity issues, however, both 32GB WiFi only iPads have intermittent WiFi connectivity issues; they were purchased on the official release date and weren't really acting up until a couple of days ago.

We have several other devices including tvs, cell phones, desktops, and laptops that connect just fine to our home WiFi network without any issues. Am thinking of getting an Apple Router to see if it'll make a difference. Currently using a Cisco Linksys Wireless Router wrt120n. Have done the forget wireless network and reset network on both iPads to no avail; also rebooted the router several times. One second we will have all 3 bars (full fan), then 2, then 1, then none, and then 1, then 3, then 2, etc. Internet will run slow then speed up then quit then not allow us to connect to our own home network. These new iPads replaced an original iPad and an iPad 2 which were working flawlessly; having some serious second thoughts but too late now they were both sold. Oh yeah, the smart cover sleep/wake functions don't work with our new iPads but the bright side is the screen looks good. Hopefully Apple will publicly acknowledge the WiFi issue and do something to resolve this issue soon otherwise they are going back.

D-Link as a brand of routers are really unreliable in general. I have had trouble configuiring them, and they may require certain special proprietary security options to be turned off. I am not talking about the NAT firewall, but other security protections that are unnecessary and may impede a connection. You may wish to contact D-link support, as we've said, the ipad 3 may use a slightly newer standard of N.

Make sure your firmware is up to date.

Can you connect to it on a laptop not running the software that comes with the D-Link?

I generally do not troubleshoot D-Link routers, I generally replace them, but tech support will know all the ins and outs.

If you turn off encryption (as a troubleshooting mechanism), can you connect?

As I said the TKIP+AES encryption type is necessary to make a connection?
