Most routers with the new -N ratified settings will work with the new ipad most of the time. Sure there are cases where will not, but things like "death grip", etc., really, if I hold my laptop screen with a so called "death grip" it will bleed colors at the pressure point, is that a cause for me to return my laptop then?
I cannot remember right now who makes the wifi chip on the new ipad, but most manufacturers are getting away from the old standards and trying to get as much speed as they can from the -N standard. So you must know that old routers b and g are not being tested as throughfully as the new standard, and I think that you are tech savvy enough to understand why.
I travel quite a lot also, most hotels are still using g, and some are still using the old b routers. and you also understand about repeaters at the hotels, etc., right?
It is possible that this wifi chip on the new ipad is finicky, I don't know since mine works very good in my house and I can go over 100 feet and still maintain a good signal. I have not tried the amazing death grip because that is not how I use my electronics, and so far all of my stuff, stereos, etc. have last me more years that care to remember.
Lastly, you probably know that the forums are for user based support by helping each other. Things like the wifi issues should be addressed directly to Apple by calling tech support or Apple Care, which everyone gets for 90 days free when you buy any Apple product
