The New iPad wifi connection drop with 802.11g

This is my 2nd day of using the New iPad.

The New iPad experiences serious wifi connection drop when connect to my personal hotspot by 802.11g. It happens when the iPad streams HD video from youtube, sync big file (~100MB), and download iBook (~900MB). The HD video stream connection issue usually happens after few minutes of streaming. From my experience it has more than 90% of chance of connection drop.

I tested the New iPad in wifi of Apple Store, where 802.11n is used. The wifi connection drop issue does not happen. It works well.

Here is my personal hotspot device and configuration:

ClearSpot 4G (Apollo)

Hardware V02

Software 01.20.99.999

Wifi Channel: 9

Anthenticaltion: WPA-WPA2 Mixed PSK

Encrytion: TPIK

Working mode: 802.11g only

RTS Threshold: 2346

Fragmentation Threshold: 2346

Beacon Period: 100

DTIM Interval: 1

Preamble length: Short Preamble

Transmition Power: High

The firmware of this device is up to date.

I am quite sure the personal hotspot works well since there is no connection issue on my iPhone 4 and my PC.

I am pretty disappointed since my first 'New iPad' got this kind of issue. I do not have other choice to upgrade to 802.11n at this moment since the personal hotspot is the only internet connection that I can have in home.

I hope Apple could address this backward compatabilty issue and release a fix in the upcoming iOS update.

I may have to return this 'New iPad' if there is no solution, since I really have no way to connect other than 802.11g.

Does anyone experience same issue or could provide a solution? Thanks

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

Additional things to try.

Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.

If none of the above suggestions work, look at this link.

Thanks for comment.

Actually my iPad still can see the Wifi when it drops connection. The only way I can do is to turn off and then turn on the Wifi on iPad. Afterward it can reconnect the Wifi again. There is nothing wrong on the 802.11g personal hotspot. The problem is the iPad has some backward compatibility issue to 802.11 or not compatibile on my router.

The drop connection happens every time I watch high quality youtube video.

The iPad is just perfect to me except the wifi. I really dont want to return it but I may have to do it finally.

The only way I can do is to complain here and hopefully I can find another router. Clear 4G is very good portable solution since it has unlimited data plan and fast connection comparable to DSL. But it only provide 802.11g hotspot, where the new ipad seems doesn't support well.

I am getting the same issue pretty much since i recieved it 3-16-2012. I just purchased a new netgear cable modem/802.11n wireless that works great with all of my Windows 7 machines as well as an iPhone 4 and 4s. I have never had this much trouble with those devices, I also did not buy them when they were first issued.

Earlier today I noticed that the New iPad seems to not have connectivity issues until my wife comes home with her iPhone 4. Her phone has no trouble but the iPad just quits (perhaps it knows what is best for it and doesn't arguewith her phone) hopefully some one at apple is reading this thread and will come to our rescue.

I had this *exact* same problem! Connection stopped working but still showing connected to the network. Didn't happen on my iPhone, Mac laptop, or Lenovo Thinkpad. I really apprecaited your thread because it got me thinking that I wasn't alone.

I also noticed that it wasn't only happening with my Clear hotspot, but also with quite a few other wifi networks (hotels, airports, etc).

I have tried a ton of different things. What seems to have largely solved the problem, for now, is switching from "WPA-WPA2 mixed" to just WPA authentication (haven't tried WPA2).

See if that works! Keep us posted.

I recently purchased an iPad 3 in India and I guess I am facing the same issue.. It works fine in my home wireless N/W where I have a Cisco E3000 router that supports wireless N.

Now, at work, I am trying to connect my iPad to a wireless N/W to which my iPhone 4 and my laptop connect without any issues. The iPad connects without any issue in the sense that it gets an IP and all other N/W settings from the DHCP but internet browsing just doesn't work. I am going to find out whether it is a N or G network though..

My challange is, even if I take it to the store I bought it from, I am going to have a hard time explaining this particular situation to the guy and convince him that there is some problem with the iPad..

Any suggestions?
