iPad 3 charging issues

I have had my shiny new iPad plugged in overnight with it's included iPad charger (it was displaying some context for some of that).

I have just woken up and it's only at 39%!!!! Now I know that it's meant to take longer to charge but that is unbelievable!?

As I said I'm using the lead and charger it came with, the only exception is I'm also using a usb extension lead inbetween as the plug is quite far away. I used the same lead with my iPad 2 every night and it charged fine and fast.

It also kept displaying not charging when plugged into my PC (which is definitely high powered ports).

Should I be booking a genius bar appointment do you think!?

Thanks!

Oh, and one more thing I'd like to add ---- why the heck are they still using a 0.3 megapixel front facing camera? It's absolutely absurd!! Add $10 to the price if you must. You have this beautiful retina display yet I can't see the people I'm talking to at Retina resolution. The camera should be there, and the option should be present whether or not we want to use it at high-res or not for those who have fast Wi-Fi connections. And FaceTime still over Wi-Fi now that you have 4G? Absolutely no excuse. I shouldn't have to use a different video conferencing program to chat on 4G.

I'd love to hear Apple's reason why they are using VGA resolution (640x480) which was a 1980's standard.

Oh I'm sure they know. With so many devices being sold it would be impossible for them not to know. As for them doing better? I think the weak points that we are at are LCD displays and current battery technology. Chips are advancing faster than batteries are so until we get better technology for batteries we may see a slow down from here on.

As for the LCDs it is clear the future is OLED. Not only would you get superior blacks but things like light leaks, discolorations and inconsistent illumination would be a thing of the past, not to mention better battery life and cooler temps. People just need to realize that LCDs suffer from those issues in varying degrees. It is very difficult to find a perfect LCD display, unfortunately. As much as I like the new display I hope Apple goes OLED next time. There are just too many headaches with LCD. It's why I have two plasmas in my home.

Yeah, nonsense.... I let my battery drain four full times on the iPad I just returned and I barely got any improvement. And is that what we are made to do now? If it helped, Apple should be doing it for us.

Taxes,

Yes, OLED is the future. I used to invest in PANL (Universal Display Corporation) who produces the majority of OLED displays. Their stock had gone from $5 to $60 in a little over a year but it's down now to $37.45. Apple has heavy investments in LCD and until Apple makes the switch only the other companies will use it which unfortunately isn't enough to bring the price down to an affordable enough level for a 9.7" panel. Though, the new Windows 8 tablets will have some 10.1" panels at 2560x1440 at 291 ppi so it's yet to be seen if they will be OLED or not. The other problem with OLED is that the color accuracy just isn't there yet. Once it is, designers will start using them when they are available in larger display sizes. I've seen OLED cell phones and the small OLED Sony TV and the contrast/brightness is amazing but it's too saturated. Soon though it will have advanced enough to be as accurate as IPS. And truthfully, the Dell Ultrasharp 24" IPS from 2010 with fluorescent lighting is more accurate than their newer LED version and they even admit it. The new iPad Retina display has the most accurate color rendition I've ever seen on any display, and that might be why Apple is still using LCD/LED screens. Or perhaps the reason is they have more financial incentive to stay with the status quo for now. If Apple winds up buying out Sharp, you can forget about seeing OLED from Apple anytime soon.

Just got back from the Apple Store a couple of hours ago. Who would have thought that the best place to test many new iPad (3rd gen. let's just call it iPad 3) was at their store, duh...why didn't I think of that. I wasn't even actually testing their iPads I was simply comparing MY NEWLY EXCHANGED IPAD 3 with THEIR IN-STORE iPad 3's. Wow, to my amazement I can now confirm about the battery actually draining instead of charging when its plugged in. I was simply using the iPad 3 from the Apple store with Safari opened up to an online stopwatch to time how much my newly exchanged pristine out-of-the-box iPad 3 battery drained per minute. Almost 15 minutes into the whole process, I witnessed their in-store iPad 3 while plugged in and only wi-fi on go from 96% to 95%. I immediately asked a genius there and they said maybe the plug was loose, but I checked and the iPad 3 clearly showed that it was charging. I asked him why was this, he simply said he didn't know and maybe it's one of the defective ones.

WHAT! IPAD 3 BATTERLY LIFE DRAINS WHILE CHARGING!!!

P.S: All their units was at maximum brightness. I guess they want their screens to look bright and pretty for the customers to observe. If I have time, I will maybe go back to the Apple Store and do some more tests and maybe record some footage of this charging issue. Oh yea, forgot to mention like all iPad 3 at maximum brightness with nothing running except for the screen being constantly on, the battery drained at about 1% for every 3 minutes which is about only 5 hours of use time for a full charge.

i think it's more of a Power consumption > Charging speed issue.

we all now knows that the supplied charger charge like a slug...

and the flashy new hardware, gfx, 4g, and screen are eating up the power like mad.

some ppl have suggested to turn off 4g from settings and lower brightness to reduce power consumption...

and many ppl have also pointed out that a product should never be designed to LOSE power when being charged via a mains power charger!!!

i am not a eletronic genius, but i think apple has electronic design flaws at least on the charging part since some ppl have pointed out that the ipad3 actually drains quicker when being plugged into mains!! LOL which might have been due to ipad3 auto switch to turbo/bright/100% speed mode when being charged.

i have canceled my order for the new ipad3 which is due to arrive because i read the clauses, in the event that I opened the box, they will charge me 25% of the purchase price if I am not satisfied with the now known not so chargable IPAD3, OR they will charge me 13-15% (cant recall) as restocking COST if I didnt open the box at all after receiving the IPAD3. APPLE is DEVIL... this is so not right!!! why the heck would I want to risk buying a known defect IPAD3 while end up paying money for acting as a lab testing white rat...... this is totally insane... if the same thing happen to iPhone 5, APPLE will no longer dominate and will instead bankrupt.

Where did you read that? I don't know if their return policies are different in other countries but here in America that is not the case. They no longer charge a restock fee, which was certainly never 25%.

Apple doesn't charge restocking fees, and in the first 14 days you can return it for a complete refund. I don't know where you were given that misinformation from, but if you live in the United States that certainly does not apply, and as far as I know no other country charges restocking fees either, if you purchased it directly from Apple.

Apparently singapore buyers does not enjoy the same return policy....

http://store.apple.com/sg/open/salespolicies#yourrighttoreturn

iPhone/iPad Return Policy

If you are not fully satisfied with your iPhone/iPad purchase, you can return your undamaged iPhone/iPad to the Apple Online Store within 14 calendar days from the time you receive your iPhone/iPad for a refund. A 25% open box fee will be assessed on any opened unit (per unit). A 15% restocking fee will be assessed on closed box returns (per unit). Please visit online Order Status or call 1800-MY-APPLE to request a return. The iPhone/iPad must be returned in the original packaging, including any accessories, manuals, and documentation. Please note that returning your iPhone/iPad pursuant to this policy will not automatically cancel your mobile network agreement. Please refer to the terms and conditions of your contract with your mobile network operator for more information.

How the heck can a consumer access whether the iPhone/iPAD is working or functioning as it is supposed to without opening the BOX?

this is totally wrong... and why does APPLE give different sales policy in different countries... maybe in US there's stronger consumer rights groups?!

Mar 27, 2012 2:11 AM in response to oceanx2k

Wow, that is completely messed up!!! If it is damaged and you want a replacement they will obviously do that but for a refund they charge you if it isn't damaged. The laws in Singapore must allow for that so Apple takes advantage of any profit they can make off it. Perhaps though Singapore charges an import tax and Apple doesn't want to pay for something they made no money on which I can understand, if that's what's going on. Call an Apple rep and find out. Otherwise, find a friend willing to buy it for you in the U.S. and ship it to you, or buy it from an online retailer that will sell to your country.

I try to buy whatever I can from Amazon.com. They won't charge you sales tax like Apple does, you have 30 days to return it, and in most cases if an item is partially faulty but you're willing to live with it instead of returning it they will give you up to a 20% discount.
