iPad 3 charging issues

I have had my shiny new iPad plugged in overnight with it's included iPad charger (it was displaying some context for some of that).

I have just woken up and it's only at 39%!!!! Now I know that it's meant to take longer to charge but that is unbelievable!?

As I said I'm using the lead and charger it came with, the only exception is I'm also using a usb extension lead inbetween as the plug is quite far away. I used the same lead with my iPad 2 every night and it charged fine and fast.

It also kept displaying not charging when plugged into my PC (which is definitely high powered ports).

Should I be booking a genius bar appointment do you think!?

Thanks!

Not sure it mentions it on the back of the box? Mine just refers to www.apple.com/batteries. But yeah, I calculate it at roughly 8 hours for a full charge give or take 30 mins.

Bear in mind that you shouldn't be using an iPod charger, use the iPad charger, it's a lot higher capacity than the older iPod and iPhone chargers. It's 10w instead of I believe 5w which was the older chargers, which might make up for your difference.

You may just have to let the battery bed in for a few more days, do a few more longer charge/decharge cycles and see if it gets better. If not, then it might be time for a trip to the Genius bar.

Just went to the genius bar and he confirmed that what I, and I think many people are experiencing is normal. Here is a list of charging items that are considered normal for the new ipad with it plugged in via the included charger. If you have noticeably different experiences then have your new ipad and/or charger replaced. If you consider the following not normal then please post and site your source.

-Charging from 0% to 100% will take 5 to 6 hours while in sleep mode.

-Charging while in sleep mode will increase at a rate of about 18-20% per hour which slows down the higher it goes.

-While using the ipad at 100% brightness then battery will basically hold its charge, but it will not increase.

-While using it at 50% brightness the battery will increase its charge, but the rate depends on what you are doing.

-The supplied charger gets warm to the touch, it should not get hot where you don’t want to hold it.

It basically seems that if you think the ipad at 100% brightness and being used should be able to charge itself, or you think it should be able to charge itself completely in 3 hours in sleep mode then this is not the product for you.

Thanks for listing the behaviour, it's good to know its not broken.

The response of this is not the product for you is a cop out though. My response to this would have been "that's great, thanks for the information. Please feedback to your superiors that it's not good enough".

It's really not unreasonable to expect a device even at 100% brightness playing a game to charge.

I have a 32 gig wifi and it is at 10% per hour with wifi, no push notifications aside from mail, calendar, reminders; 60% screen brightness (auto) and whatever else is running in background re apps. I am on Safari 100% of this time aside from going back and forth to Settings. Have 8 web pages going at once. Purchased last Friday and will be doing charge testing while in sleep mode and off, will post on this.

How am I doing so far? This is my first IPad and would like a good experience. BTW no over heating so far, will get hubby to game on it.

Those of you who have iPhone 4S are probably well aware of crummy battery life. I have the gen 3 iPad and a 4S. Here are some things I learned in practice...Discharge battery fully at least twice and fully charge. DO NOT update your iOS software from within the device (by this I mean going through settings). Every time I have tried it, with every device it kills the battery life. I know this isn't an issue with the iPad gen 3 yet because it came with 5.1. Still, when it comes time to upgrade, do it on your Mac/PC through iTunes because it will download the complete and full OS (not a patch like you do through the device).

Longer cable can and most probably will affect your charge time. Current is lower on a longer cable because the resistance is higher and you have a larger voltage drop. i = r/v. I have several long cables laying around the house and most caused much longer recharge times. Oh and if you are adding an extension cable (30-pin connector type male/female) on top of that you are adding another voltage drop AND more resistance!

Another thing, not an ideal solution but a good 12VDC iPad specific car charger will charge the snots out of your iPad quickly.

I took my slow charging iPad 3 to the Genius bar tonight (Fri) and was told that the charging/not charging "While in use" is "Normal" & "IT IS NOT EXPECTED TO CHARGE WHILE PLUGGED IN & IN USE". Says I should plug the adapter and cable directly into the wall outlet and charge it all night while the iPad is in sleep mode. Once it charges to 100% and the charge should last 10 hours - give or take, depending on how you use it. Read Apple's info on batteries and charging.

You should allow the battery to completely drain to "0" and recharge to 100% at least 1 x per month.

The Genius connected a digital multimeter to my iPad 3 and it read 1.54 amps in the circuit.

I read on another site, can't remember where now, that the iPad 3 battery will "Fast Charge" to 80% then it "trickle charges" to 100% and that this extends both battery life and device life.

This article says that "The iPad 3 battery continues charging even after it reports that it’s “100%” full. In reality, it continues to charge for another 2 hours and 10 minutes. So after your battery reads 100%, keep it plugged in for at least another 2 hrs 10 minutes.

Hope this helps everyone 'cuz according to Apple and others, it seems like we all need to just adapt to the "New iPad's Battery Charge via Non-Use Explanation". According to everything I've read and have been told by Apple Genius', the fastest way to charge the iPad 3 is to turn off all of the features that you wanted the iPad 3 for; Wi-Fi, Push Notifications, Brightness of Diaplay at 50%, Airplane Mode, iCloud, 3G, etc.

The so-called Apple Geniuses that told you that are Apple retards. I've been in contact with a Senior Advisor at Apple named Shannon Hoehne and she said the engineers want my iPad back in their labs to see what's going on because it certainly is not normal. You think not being able to keep a 100% charge when plugged in is the "new normal" when every device on the planet doesn't work that way and just because the misinformed store clerks told you so? If you really believe that, you are the exact target audience Apple tries to sell to.

Some people at Apple really are honest. I'll give you another example told to me by a senior advisor in the past about the iPhone 4S. You ever wonder why the spinning icon on shutdown is low-res and why a tiny white pixel appears next to the Apple logo on start up? It's not by accident. Apple did it intentionally so they could easily and quickly tell it apart from a jail broken phone.

"The so-called Apple Geniuses that told you that are Apple retards."

I wholeheartedly agree Bellatone! That's why I added "it seems like we all need to just adapt to the "New iPad's Battery Charge via Non-Use Explanation".

I was trying to be sarcastic in my previous post, but I guess that was a fail on my part. Too late at night. I view my encounter as a blatant dismissal of my complaint. I have always charged every other device I have while I was using it, including the iPad 1 and my iPhone 4s. The multimeter test they did proves that while my iPad was not running any apps and the brightness was set at 50%, Airplane mode was on, the iPad was still consuming 1.54 amps. The Genius was "amped" because he said he was anxious to test one and after seeing the reading exclaimed "OMG look at that!".

The 2 amp charger that comes with the iPad 3 is definitely not powerful enough to do what it's supposed to do. Apple saved money by designing the iPad 3 to use the same charger as previous iPads.

I'm far from happy or satisfied with the answers I received. Apple screwed up and I hope that enough people will continue to complain about the battery charging issue, because IT IS an ISSUE! There should be a more powerful charger made to perform with the battery just the same as all other devices do. Oh, and when I mentioned that to the Genius, he said, "please leave feedback with Apple so they can fix it if it is an issue, because Apple Listens".

Seriously?

Went into myer (Australian department store) to check out the new iPad. They had two brand new iPads on display. They where in display mode ie full screen brightness and a graphics marketing loop display and on permenant charger with a security device attached, guess what - both where far off fully charged! One was 80% and one was 70% They are used buy customers all day to play with apples latest technology! (single iPad 2 still on display was 100%) I think they will have to rotate a few iPads to keep the little darlings fully charged! What an embarresment to apple. I have the new iPad I love it (screen is amazing) apart from the fact it will not charge while I'm using it!

Not at all as I'm sure even if it is slowly losing charge it will go easily well beyond a day and I'm sure by the end of the closing hours they are shut down or put to sleep.
