How can I access http://192.168.0.1:4728/ with ipad safari?

Hi everybody!

I have a problem: i have a local ruby on rails application on my windows 7 desktop that i can access without any problem on my local wifi network. I tested with other windows 7 clients, ubuntu linux firefox clients, chrome etc. I dont have a mac computer though, only iphone and ipad - the latest versions

But i cannot use my iphone's safari or my ipad safari to access the local network site http://192.168.0.1:4728/

When i enter a local network ip and a port - i get an error that safari cannot connect to the server.

This is not a firewall issue, a mistake in the ip or the port of the server and i am not looking for an app that allows me to do remote access like splashtop. All the devices are connected to the same lan, via wifi. I even disabled 3g and allowed only wifi - still cannot read on ios what i can on pc/linux.

This is not a flash problem - the site is just a regular dynamic web site with a database behind it. I am just looking to access a intranet site. This is a dynamic site and i cannot copy it on the ipad because it uses databases etc.

Is ios safari not allowing ports? Intranet/localnet sites?

Should i use a port remapper? (i dont know how to do that) Should i use a proxy server to fool safari that this is a internet site?(how do i do that?). I looked on the net for hours - could not find a straight answer on how to access http://192.168... Or http://10.x.y.z:port/ sites on ios

Safari on iOS definitely does allow access to local network hosted sites - I do it all the time on my iPhone for web development purposes.

I just type the IP address:port into the URL bar. e.g. 192.168.1.1:9000

I can't say why it's not working for you, but I can rule out it being that Safari doesn't allow it.

This is very reassuring, but smth is not working. From 3 different computers / various browsers - on my lan i can access the 192.168...:4728 site, deactivated firewalls - ios ... Nothing.

I tried to type 192.168.0.1:4728/ in the adressbar - automatically safari adds a www.192.168... And then i get the same error.

I was thinking about setting a dns server :((

What exactly do you type in url bar?

I literally just type "192.168.1.1:9000" and Safari adds "http://" to the start so "http://192.168.1.1:9000" also works fine.

Safari doesn't add "www" for me. I would guess that may be your DNS server trying to be helpful...?

I use both Google DNS and OpenDNS - maybe those would work for you?

Got exactly same problem.

My Android, Linux, Windows all can access the intranet website. Its only iPad/iPhone that do not access it.

I do not even see any thing in access_log when I try iPad 4/iPhone 5.

Though the site can be accessed with iPhone 4S.

I had this problem and solved it. My internal website, icicle.local:8001, was accessible from another mac on the network and my iphone 4S (iOS 7), but not from my iPad, using either Chrome or Safari. I tried typing the name in different forms: icicle.local:8001, 192.168.1.113:8001, and typing out the entire address with http:// at the beginning (because I noticed often the browser was assuming https:). Nothing doing.

Finally, looking at the iPad Settings:Wif-Fi:Info, I noticed there was a domain name in my Search Domains box. This is a domain name I own and use for email and such but it really has nothing to do with my local network-- there is no local DNS server for it. I tried deleting it, but it came back from DHCP. So I went to my Airport Express using Airport Utility and deleted the Domain Name in the Internet tab. Now it works!

although I can not get the modem to enter the correct ip address (http://192-168-o-1/) in the iPad Safari line.
