I do not believe Apple when they say the iPad charger is ok to use on the iPhone but that is my opinion then idiots like you come off like they know everything when they know nothing.

Oh my, stooping as low as your level to return your personal insult, no, not I.

Also, this world is crowded with believers and non-believers.

Tough, ain't it...

You are the expert here so why don't you explain all this to everyone that reads this post it is now in your hands since you are the expert, so why don't you answer that one since I am guessing you have some type of degree in electronics.

Exactly which word in the following sentence is far beyond the reach of your limited comprehension:

"The actual formula explaining this phenomenon is totally irrelevant for this forum".

For the answer to what the charge should be why don't you explain it all for everyone to read since you seem to know everything and am leaving that in your hands.

May I remind you that you claimed certain percentages of battery charge should be respected.

Now you turn the situation around 180° and you are asking me to substantiate your claim!

Cute!

For all the ones that do not believe that the 2.1 iPad charger is ok to use here are some excerpts from some of my books I just dug out now that I finished a project I was working on I broke this down as simple as I can because the books are very detailed and want to keep this as simple as possible....

Remember... I am posting this for optimum battery charging and extending the life of your battery

Well I gave it a few days for someone to explain all this and just got a few 1 to 2 sentences saying I was wrong, so me being impatient I figured since all the replies that is the best they could do I would put this up. I tried to keep it simple as I can for them and am really curious what they would have to say about it, but I am done with this Apple Forum....

NOW..... As I stated above and MANY times this is for optimal battery life and is not practical as I stated many times and I myself do not practice it, because I do not keep a phone long enough to do this. My iPad I will have around for a while so I will practice it with that. If you want to keep your iWhatever around and not have to go and buy a new battery before you have to you can do this.... If you do not mind spending the money on a new battery when yours starts to lose capacity that is up to you.

This was a simple question I answered based on all the years I spent in school for this and I have everyone with 1 to 2 sentences saying I am wrong.... Not one person has stated any background in electronics and have provided no proof of any statements they have said....

If anyone else decided to read this post read all the "know it all 1 to 2 sentence replies" and think to yourself.... Who knows what they are talking about? The person with the degree and background or the people with the 1 to 2 sentences that offer no information except "You are wrong" and back it up with no information. Not to be rude but if you are going to make a statment back it up with some factual information and no one has yet to say what type of background they have.. I know absolutely nothing about fixing my vehicles except electronics so if something mechanical goes out I am lost. When their is an electrical problem I can diagnose it unless it is a dealer only programable part. So... For all the "Experts with their 1 to 2 sentences I will break this down as SIMPLE as I can so you can UNDERSTAND it, beause not one of you has posted any information stating why I am wrong. After this I am DONE with this Forum because it is for helping people and it seems all I get it everyone saying I am wrong... So with that being said here is my LAST POST and if anyone has any problems in the future you can thank all the Know it Alls that replied to this post or call Apple and stay on the phone for them for hours

Here is the Simplest Explanation I could break down for all the 1 to 2 sentence people, and quite sure they will have a comment because they do not understand it. So after this is posted make all your wise comments and then put your foot in your mouth!

Discharge: During discharge, lithium ions carry the current from the negative to the positive electrode, through an non aqueous electrolye and separator diaphragm

Charging: The charger actually provides an OVER VOLTAGE charge then Apple states and it is clearly written all their chargers are 5 volts which is actually higher than the battery but of the same polarity of the battery than reason being it produces the battery to force current in a reduce direction. The lithium ions then migrate from the positive to the negative electrode, where they come embedded in the porus electrode material in a process called intercalation (the reversible inclusion of a moleque (or group) between two other molecules)

Now I am going to skip past a whole bunch of stuff that would leave the one to sentence people with their mouths wide open going "HUH"...

I have never opened an iPhone or iAnything so I cannot say if they put in self discharge circuits in them. To keep it simple they have a Dumb Lithium Battery, like the ones you will see in the stores they say last for 7 years that have no discharge for longer shelf life. Then they have a Smart Lithium Battery that has a self discharge circuit inside it. So if Apple did not put a self discharge circuit in the iPhone design when the device sits off and loses percentage that mean depending how much it loses how fast means a new battery or charging it all the time.

I am going to sum it up here with a few more statements so all you "One to Two Sentence" people do not get to confused. Then I delete the Apple Forum Icon on my PC and delete any Apple Emails I get. I tried to help out, but I can see from all the replies above they are the true experts and surprised they are not Engineers at Apple an they can answer all your questions because they know it all...

Charging: Charging forms deposits inside the electrolyte that inhibit ion transport and overtime the cells capacity will diminish. With all batteries the cell capacity will diminish, that is why they sell new batteries. Basically overtime the increase in internal resistance reduces the cell's ability to deliver current....

Now here is where it is IMPORTANT!!!!!!

This problem is more pronounced in HIGH CURRENT APPLICATIONS & Charging in to hot of an environment or to cold. That is why they say to do leave your iAnything or any portable device in a car because of heat and cold will degenerate the battery faster as well. Always let the device cool down or warm up to ambient (room) air temperature or else you are ruining cells in the batteires.

Believe it or not this is just the basics of Lithium Batteries and it gets much deeper with forumlas and depletion rates at temperatures. Plus all this is just batteries that everyone takes for granted and never paid any attention to. Its kinda like you live in a cold weahter state and your heating source has worked flawless for the past 20 years, but one day it breaks down and you are now freezing.. Its all the little things we take for granted in life, but never give any thought to....

Reading to all the replies I forgot this one..... The person that posted the iPad will not charge on a PC stating that it says "Not Charging" has not replied yet.... I am guessing you let it sit for 6 hours sleeping or turned it off and see that it does charge.... iPad says "Not Charging", but I am willing to bet with the .5 amp current the USB supplies from your PC you got about 5% an hour increase. So is the iPad correct saying "Not Charging" or did the current just magically jump in? I know no one wants to wait for 24 hours to charge their iPad, not even me. But that is just another example of you cannot believe everything you read from Apple..

Almost forgot this too...Since the person who has no clue why I said about strorage of a lithium battery never posted why, I am guessing he has no clue, but had to comment saying I was wrong.... Since days have past and you didnt reply I am guessing you have no clue wo I will explain since you cannot.

Their are 2 ways it is recommended you store a battery:

1) The rate of degradation of Lithium-ion batteries is also related to battery charge level; they degrade much faster when at 100% charge, bascially what this means if you cannot figure it out that at 100% the battery in storage will discharge at a faster rate. I could give you the formula, but I am sure you know it already. This is once again if Apple has the circuitry in it, which I have no clue and would have to test. I know with my iPod and Nano they do not for sure... iPhone and iPad I would test, but am always on it. I upgrade all the time and usually give my old stuff away, but will do some test when the iPhone 5 comes out (if ever only a year behind) and the next iPad, guessing next year with Apple.

2) I mentioned above their are smart lithium batteries and dumb lithium batteries and never opened up or researched which one Apple put in. Batteries witll typically discharge overtime sitting and if they go to a fully discharged state they are no good. If Apple put in protection circuit then it would be ok and this circuitry would shut it down and the battery would hold at that level protecting it from total discharge and desctruction...I do not have a clue if Apple put that in so I cannot comment if it does or does not. I believe I said above batteries in everything you own they always say do not charge in the heat or cold. One thing I forgot was that regardless of charging or running on battey power lithium batteries do degrade faster in heat, so leaving it in your car on a hot day is bad charging or not. Also, keeping in your pocket versese in a belt holstler pouch degrades the battery too. Bottom line is no battery is perfect, but heat and to much amperage while charging will shorten the life of your battery. Their is one test I do want to do is bring both chargers and use the iPhone 4S as a test and use both chargers because I would say the 2.1 amp charger will generate more heat then the 1 amp charger supppied with the phone. How much, not a clue, but read above heat degrades Lithium batteries.

One last thing and I know this is not practical with the iPhone, but I would say with the iPad... When charging turn it OFF... Not sleep Mode.... Turn it Off

Believe it or not with all this their is so much more, so everyone with your 1 to 2 sentences that could not do what I just did post all your comments and I can already picture a few... Why would he put all that? Whats that got to do with the phone? Why would anyone want to do that? I am sure you will hae your comments because you seem like you always have to get the last word in, so my question is to you....

You had days to research this but it was easier to come up with your short replies.... My question to you is do you log on to this forum just because you are jealous of other peoples knowlege and have to pretend you are right and get embarrassed when you are wrong? I said before I thought this was like other forums to help each other, but I can clearly see that it is not, that is just seems to be a bunch of people just thinking they know everything and have no clue what they are talking about. Not to be disrepectful, but if you don't know what you are talking about just read on and don't reply or perhaps ask a question to keep the discussion going to it can be figured out... I have been on some forums and that is the way they usually work, all but this one....

With this I now delete the icon off my PC and delete any email that comes in.... Sorry to say if someone does have a legit question I could have helped them with just ask all the one to two sentence people who replied to this post and do exactly opposite what they say to do, google it, call apple, try to sort it all out and weigh out which is the correct answer.... I am done with this joke forum....

Jun 7, 2012 5:30 AM in response to Apfelwurm

Just did... I did it as simple as I could and left out a TON of stuff that would have left you totally confused... If you really were interested in this topic you would research it yourself, but I am guessing you do not have a clue where to start.... Now lets see what your comments are to what I wrote... I am sure you will have something to say or add..

By the way may I ask your profession? And what degree you have in electronics?

Why such a big explanation to this tiny issue :) I regularly use my iPad charger for iPhone and I don't need somebody to tell me if I can do or not. I just read the charger specifications on the charger and I know it's fine. The only difference is current capacity of iPad charger is more because it has to support larger capacity battery.

I still believe Apple should have provide min 1.5 amp charger, it's insane to have 8-10 hours charging time .

Jun 7, 2012 7:03 AM in response to Community User

Now this is what a forum is all about, people asking questions... Why it got so big is I have a very, very extensive electroncis background and someone asked a simple question, then if you read the replies these people with no electroncic's background no all the answers but cannot explain it. They find it easier to try to embarass me and point out my typo's. You are 100% right about why such a big explanation to that tiny issue, but if you read the post I asked them to explain it to me, but they could not, so I explained it to them. I did cut out a lot and really that is pretty much all the main stuff.

I read the end of your post and you say "Apple should have provide a min 1.5 amp charger, it's insane to have an 8 to 10 hour charging time".... Ipads came with a 2.1 amp charger and I never timed one, but my guess is it should only take about 5 hours if it was at 20% doing the calculations off the top of my head. I would have to time it....iPhone came with a 1.0 Charger... What is taking 8 to 10 hours to charge up? They do sell portable power sources and Mophie has a nice one but only output 6,000 mAh which would be great for the iPad 1 and 2, but the new Ipad is coming in at

You can use your iPad charger on your iPhone and I have stated that many times. Both are the same volts so it will not fry out your phone. What it will do is if you plan on keeping your iPhone for a long time you are slowly ruining your battery. Believe me with all the problems apple is having with this IOS 5 Battery is at the top of the list.

If you are going to upgrade in a year or two, and you are on it a lot of the time of the day you for sure want speed of charging time. Downside is like I said you are slowly ruining your battery and maybe charginge 3 times a day or getting a new battery. But if you are like me you will be getting a new phone like most people upgrade so it is no big deal. I stated that many times, but these know it alls just cannot comprehend that

If you research Apple's biggest complaint what is it? Battery life and always having to recharge.... Now they suddenly say it is ok to use the ipad charger that is double the amp output which should charge you faster because amps is rate..

The ipad 1 and 2 battery is like 6,600mAh and the new iPad from what I just read is 11,666 on a quick google search. But it has a faster processor and and retina display just like the iphone 4s. I know I am getting long on this one, but think of what I just typed why did they double the ipad battery mAh,same size ipad, but the same size iPhone 4s the battery is bascially the same... They both got faster processors and retina displays and my iphone 4 I still have I barely every charge....Did Apple make a mistake pushing that out so fast since they did not get the iPhone 5 out?

Just a little FYI on the iPhone cases so you dont have to shop and get the wrong ones that are overpriced or not that good.... Energizer is horrible... The second you put the phone in the thing starts charging and gives you 40%....

Mophie.com you can check out their cases and they have two to choose from in differenct colors... be careful... One is 1,500 mAH and the other is more expensive and is 2,000 mAh, but cost around 100.00..

Best case for the value is the xpal AP 2100 on Amazon for under 50.00 and it is 2,000 mAh which will charge you up 100% on your iphone

For your iPad if you have the 1 or 2 Mophie has them, but they are 6,000 mAh which is good... If you have the new iPad it is 11,666 which will give you close to half... Their are other ones out their with more mAh you can find on Amazon...

Sorry for the long email, but wanted to give you some long good info so you are not wasting money on these battery cases and get the best for your money, plus aggravate the ones that have all the sarcastic remarks towards me and would hate for them to tell me I forogot to put something.....

I have a Masters in Electrical Enginering from Perdue and pretty close to my phD and I am done with this Apple Forum. Try to answer a question for someone and all stedman and apefulworm (whatever that means/is) cannot answer one single thing but come up with sarcasm. Not one of you could come up with one logical reason or even have a debate on anything which tells me what you know. I could really care less what you do or your profession because I am guessing it is pretty menial. Goodbye and good riddance.
