Having Trouble playing AVI. files in quick time

Earlier today i received some AVI. files from my friend, the weird thing was that they played perfectly for him but when i went to play it on my laptop they would play at all. Now we both have Macs, my quicktime is up to date, and neither me nor my friend could figure out why they worked on his and not mine. Now it said that i might be missing a codec. would any one no of something i would need to play AVI files and if so where i could get it.

installed Xvid and AC3 and still get nothing.

Any suggestions?

In the show movie info window it says
Format XVID, 720 x 480, Millions,

Another file I can't view reads
Format: DX50, 572 x 312, Unknown

Running Quicktime 7.0.4 Pro
Installed Codecs:
3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
AC3 Codec.component
DivX 6 Encoder.component
DivX 6 Decoder.component
XviD_Codec v0.5.1.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
AppleIntermediateCodec.component

Dan I won't go into all I've gone through to find
this solution or explain the details other than you
must convert avi to DivX. There is a small
application available for free download at
http://www.feringa.net/downloads/avi2DivX.jar

Thanks for the link, I downloaded the jar file and it failed to convert.

Info section says "FourCC codec used in this AVI file is not SEDG"

Any more suggestions, I really appreciate the response.

I installed the xvid component as needed after getting only a black screen that plays (but no audio).
Then after rebooting I then got only video (mute off and volume was turned up) but no audio.
Am I missing another codec?
Have Quicktime 7.0.4 with XviD and also Divx video 5.0 components installed.

Go back into QuickTime Player, Window menu, Show Movie Info and check the Format: field again - it should list the audio format as well. Perhaps its AC3 ?

AC3 CoDec - 0.4b1 for AC3 audio in AVI files - FREE - this one claims compatibility with QuickTime 7.0.2 and later
http://www.mactcp.org.nz/quicktime/AC3CodecMacOSX.sitx
AC3 CoDec - 0.3 - FREE - NOTE: NOT CURRENTLY COMPATIBLE WITH QUICKTIME 7.0.2+ ! (If your AVI's have no sound, remove this CoDec)

A52 decompressor for A52/AC-3 audio (although not in avi divx files apparently) - FREE

Hmmm, do you have or would you download MPlayer OSX or VLC to see if either will verify that there is no audio in the file?

MPlayer OS X - Plays just about everything has built-in decompression for other formats such as Indeo Video 3 - FREE
http://mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html
-- If QuickTime Player won't even open a file, try running MPlayer and showing the playlist window, drag the file into the playlist and click the "i"nfo button to see the file format, video and audio compression types.

VLC (VideoLAN Client, application, not a QuickTime Component) - FREE
