If you're asking from a purely technical point of view, yes. You will be able to install a 2011 Mac Mini with Mountain Lion. Depending on when the product (Mountain Lion) ships will dictate what you'll need to do. More than likely, you'll be able to download the upgrade for a really small amount (~$29) but if the timing is REALLY close I've seen it free. Don't count on free. If you're even bummed about $29, go look at what Win7, Photoshop and others "upgrade" for. 😉

Hi John;

and ... What about the upgrading in a Late 2009 Mac Mini?. I've heard the Early 2009 ones won't support Mountain Lion..My MacMini is at the limit!!!

I have Snow Leopard and it runs ok, but, I am really interested on the AirPlay Mirroring + AppleTV feature of Mountain Lion....to send audio+video in the same way I'm doing with my IPAD2 + AppleTV.

Thanks a lot.

Macs that will support OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

As usual, the newer the Mac the better:

  • MacBook Pro – 13″ from mid 2009 or later, 15″ from late 2007 and newer, 17″ from late 2007 and newer
  • MacBook Air – late 2008 and newer
  • iMac – models from mid 2007 and newer
  • MacBook – 13″ aluminum from 2008, 13″ from 2009 and newer
  • Mac Mini – early 2009 and newer
  • Mac Pro – early 2008 models and newer
  • XServe – early 2009 models and newer

Macs that are NOT expected to support OS X Mountain Lion

Older Macs and those with weaker GPU’s will likely be left behind:

  • Anything with an Intel GMA 950 or x3100 integrated graphics card
  • Anything with an ATI Radeon X1600
  • MacBook models released prior to 2008
  • Mac Mini released prior to 2007
  • iMac models released prior to 2007
  • Original MacBook Air

This list of compatible and incompatible Macs and system requirements are based off of the first OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview and may be subject to change, we will update when we learn more about the specifics. OS X Mountain Lion will be released this summer but presumably long before that we will know precise system requirements and what Macs are and are not supported by the new version of OS X. Stay tuned.

Hi BDAqua;

Thanks a lot for your answer.

My fear is to be in the limit in terms of requirements to install MLion in my MacMini Late 2009. My mac mini (Core 2 Duo 2,26 Ghz, 8 Gb RAM and Geforce 9400) is running really fast with Snow Leopard would become an slow machine.... I've recently bought AirParrot and it works really good mirroring my mac to TV with AppleTV...the problem is I only can send the video...to enable audio I need OSX Lion 10.7 or higher.

In your opinion, Should I wait for MLion or upgrade to Lion now?. Actually I'd like send my Mac to my TV, it's only the reason to upgrade, and with airParrot + Lion It will work....or It's what I heard.

PS: Sorry for my bad English

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I'm in Afghanistan so my internet connectivity is sometimes limited.

It looks like your initial question is answered. I have an older iMac and I've upgraded it to Lion with no real problems. It didn't make it slower, at least not noticeably, and if I recall correctly, I also picked up a gig of diskspace back. It has a smaller footprint. However, I noticed the last update is a gig, so you'll be right back when you update. With my limited bandwidth, 1 gig would take weeks to download so I'm not going to be installing it anytime soon.

For your fans, mine kick on when I'm doing heavy processing, like rendering HD videos in iMovie. Before you reset the SMC, have you tried eliminating an application as the cause? For example, I occasionally run Twonky media server on my MBP and it'll make the fans come on. I'd first go through my startup and remove everything, and then add them one by one until I figure out what application is causing them to kick on.
