Overheating iPad - SOLUTION ?

I've been reading and watching this issue progress and have started to see some trends. It appears to be left from some corrupt settings from a previous version of iOS and also a recalibration of the battery. Couple this with a post from another user (davidch), here is what is largely considered a solution to the issue...

1. Reset all user data (settings app-> general-> reset)

2. Go through initial setup steps and choose setup as new phone. Do NOT restore from an old backup at this stage, it may write back your corrupt settings.

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off). This may take some time.

5. Fully recharge battery overnight.

Please give this a go before you take the iPad back. If it resolves the issue then it certainly points to the software running processor controls for the iPad 2 which has different needs to the new iPad or indeed a battery recycle issue.

Feed back your experience below on this post and let's see if we can get the feedback to apple so they can coordinate an iOS update if needed.

I cycled my battery three times and did a reset. Mine was warm to begin with, but that has decreased since I cycled the battery three times and did a reset. I was at the point of returning my new ipad, when I decided to cycle a third time. This has helped a lot. Don't give up and realize that all electronics do give off heat. My Macbook Pro runs hotter than my ipad, but they are two different machines as are the different models of ipads. I had to realize that they are not going to be the same just like different models of the iphones are different from each other. Hope this perhaps helps others. 🙂

My new iPad has been warm but by no means "hot". Today it started getting really warm. I'd been sitting in the same place for about an hour, just using Safari and mail. Then I realized what had happened: my wife had opened the curtain on a large window, flooding the room with the morning sun. The iPad's auto brightness feature had upped the screen's brightness. I was able to see how much brighter it was by turning off auto brightness and watching the screen dim.

I admit I've been thinking, "these folks are nuts using the iPad at 100%!". I didn't realize I was doing the same thing without meaning to.

So it seems that the heat is definitely from the screen, that said, I did notice that the auto brightness feature isn't very responsive to moving from a bright room to a dark room - it doesn't seem to dim the screen much if at all in that case. You'll see this if you set auto brightness on, go for a dark room into a light room, return to the dark room, and toggle the auto brightness switch.
