In some situation when you change spotlight search to home screen on IPhone 4s with IOS 5.1 the keyboard dos not disappear, and persist on home page and other application pages, only powe off/on the phone can help for this issue, but it comes back again after while, this is an apple IOS bug, is there any permenent solution for fixing this annoying bug ?
PS : this bug is also exist in perviouse versions of IOS.

if its a bug that exists in previous versions of ios including 5.1, there is no permanent fix for it until Apple supplies a fix with a new update. Try doing a backup / restore. 🙂
Set it up as new device without using the latest backup, in case it contains corrupt data.
There is a bug that causes the software keyboard not to appear. The easiest way to view the keyboard if this happens is to turn off orientation lock (if it is on) and then turn your device 90 degrees. This will cause the device to load the keyboard in its other orientation and then the keyboard should be visible.
when i power off/on ke device it works fine for while ( it depends may 2-3 days ) suddenly after changing spotlight search to home this is happened ( many times i swap between search and home, but every thing is ok, it just happened in some situations, i dont know when ) therefore it can not caused by crrupted data, otherwise it must be happened upon phone powered on.
Keyboard rotation dos not work on HOME Screen it just work in SMS or other application 😟
How big is your "other" file when you look at the color bar in iTunes? If it is bigger that 1GB, this could be a sign of corrupt data. The size can only be reduced by restoring the phone. Actually my "other" section is 0.7GB on my iPhone4.
My "Other" sections is 0.69 GB and my phone details is :
IPhone 4s
Unlock Factory
64GB
Black
IOS Ver : 5.1 (9B179)
Modem Firmware : 2.0.10
So it's definitively not the "other" section.
How about the multitask bar, if this happens after a certain time of use, it could be that the memory of the phone is running low, due to the many apps still running or listed in stand by. See if removing those apps from the multitask bar will help.

I have the same problem since I changed my Apple ID password a couple of days ago. I had to relogin in many apps and settings. Also photostream went crazy then, redownloading & uploading all photos.
It happens when I go to Spotlight and back home without using Spotlight, but also when I use Spotlight open a result and later go back to home screen, the keyboard will still be there waiting for me. It stays there while swiping to other screens. To resolve I tap power button (screen black) and home+slide to unlock and the keyboard is gone. Until I go Spotlight again.
My specs:

iOS 5.1
Freespace 6GB
Multitask bar is always nearly empty, I like to keep things tidy and fast.
No jailbreak
Settings:
iCloud on
Siri off
Auto lock off
Keyboard Dutch (Nederlands), no extra/emoji keyboards
Update, clearing the iPhone and restore from iCloud (love that) resolved the problem for me.
I restored the phone completely, but this problem still exist, its ok for couple of days (After Restoring, Or Completely Power Off/On With Power+Home ) but it will be appeared.
I cant find in which situation this error eccoured but it will be come back after using... may be 5 or more days....
My other friends have this problem too (about 10 person, who have the IPhone 4S, with IOS 5.1) , i think it is GENERAL, but it seems people are happy with this, but it is annoying me !!!

The problem just returned for me, when sliding to spotlight and quickly back to homescreen before keyboard slide-open animation finished.
iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1, open apps: Wordfeud and WeatherPro. Everything is up to date, 7.4GB free space, 53MB free ram.
