p99-imap.mail.me.com not responding

I can neither send or receive email on my Macbook Air usiing my iCloud account. The server p99-imap.mail.me.com is not responding. It is the default server that is chosen by email setup and cannot be changed.

I finally got my mail working once Apple finally posted on iCloud Status that they had a problem. Within minutes everything was working. Although I lost my "sent" folder in my iCloud group on my Mac when I set up using p99.imap.mail.me.com. Sent messages on still on the iCloud website but not on my Mac. Thanks for excellent video. My question for you: Now that I am connected to that strange iCloud p99-imap.mail.me.com server, should I delete it and install the IMAP server setting imap.mail.me.com following your instructions?

Personally, I would set it up as imap.mail.me.com

I imagine the address gets distributed to individual servers based on availability and load.

The letter-number combination is likely a server location and numbering system to help with administration, so you end up with servers with names like p99-imap.mail.me.com and p07-imap.mail.me.com or something like that.

It seems that lots of the mac.com and mobileMe users got assigned directly to the p99 server. And when that server ran into problems over the last couple days, it effected many users.

If those user's accounts had been set to imap.mail.me.com their traffic would have been re-directed seamlessly to a functioning server and they wouldn't have noticed there was any problems.

In essense, the "automatic" setup is the only thing that failed when it assigns you directly to p99 instead of the controlling server imap.mail.me.com

Issue resolved... keep reading if you would like more information!

Like many others... I've been having issues with iCloud mail on my Mac for the last few days (iCloud mail is fine on all iOS devices). Tried many different suggestions posted in this and other threads and nothing seemed to fix my issue.

I called my Dad to see if he was having any issues with iCloud mail on his Mac... he stated he was having no issues. I logged into his computer and compared his iCloud mail settings with mine... and found that we both had the same address for incoming mail server "p99-imap.mail.me.com". I clicked on the "Advanced" tab and found here's where I found the answer to my problem! My "authentication" method was set for "password"... while his was set to "Apple Token". I decided to change mine to "Apple Token"... and lo and behold... my iCloud mailbox is back online on my Mac.

In reading the different solutions suggested... it appears that results may vary... so this may work for some and not others... probably depending on what each individual's issue is. Hopefully this will help some of you resolve your mail issue too!

The problem is not with your password (or strength) but with the mail servers you are connecting to. Instead of using a pXX.mail.me.com it is more stable to use smtp.mail.me.com and imap.mail.me.com which are load balanced on Apple's server end to ensure reliability and speed. "boodaah" also explained this as well above.
