Apple TV 3rd generation stuttering on buffer

i have ran e net from my airport extreme direct to my imac and atv3 and get video stutter (this happens durring the buffer) after the buffer is complete the stuttering stops ...(for both local movies in itunes and internet based from the itunes store) i tried wifi since the e net port is not gigabit and still have the same issue ... my first gen atv never had an issue streaming (yes streaming localy ...not stored on its internal hdd) ... i also tried lowering resolution to 720p and turning off dolby digital audio to no avail ... im pretty sure this is a hardware issue the processor must be crunching while buffering is happening ... does any one have similar issues? i am going to call apple tomorrow

Just to update on my previous post:

I remembered that i had an old usb wifi dongle.

After disabling the ethernet connections completely on both ends, I connected the wifi link, and im now achieving 2MB/s transfer rates via home share to my ATV3.

The result is near instant streaming of 1080 content without pre and during buffer stops.

The dongle is only marked 802.11G but is so far no problem for me.

This is running itunes latest and IOS 5.1.0

IOS 5.1.1 is out with an ethernet fix, but im holding off on that for a while to gauge the responses of the latest update.

Good luck.

So, I just got an Apple TV 3 today and I had the same stuttering problem when streaming HD content from the iTunes server or from my iMac (which is a maxed out 2012 model). I was all ready to return it when I stumbled across a thread in which people found that the auto motion plus was the culprit. I detest the smooth motion options on newer tvs, and always keep the MotionFlow on my Sony TV turned off, but found that I had a setting called CineMotion that was turned on. I turned this off and, voila, perfecto! Any content I stream now plays back fine, just as it should! Check the settings in your TV to see if there's any kind of post-processing being done and swtich that off. I hope this helps some of you!!

So like above I just got a Apple TV 3 and I have a video stutter when use airplay mirroring on my MacBook Pro when I'm playing mirroring movies.

About my setup, I have a pre HD 42inch plasma which unfortunately not going to change for a while as the tv cabling and home cinema all are channeled and run inside the walls.

So I bought a HDMI to Scart digital converter which didn't know existed until a few days ago, plugged Apple TV by HDMI to the converter and Scart from the converter to the tv. Worked absolutely fine playing music and YouTube videos from my iPhone to the tv. Yet when I try to use mirroring from my mac it began to stutter and lag.

At first I assumed it must be the HDMI to Scart converter, so to test this removed Apple TV and plugged a HDMI cable from my mac (using the mini HDMI adapter for mac) into the converter and left the Scart from the converter to tv. The tv again mirrors the mac but this time no stutter on the screen.

Next step I think it may be my wifi, but currently have sky fibre and they give you the standard n wireless router from them, so I've ordered a Asus RT-AC66U which is the fastest router you can get (needed it for other things as well) which is dual band and supports 450mbps on 2.4ghz and 1300mbps on 5ghz which is used for HD streaming and Apple TV and the like.

Getting it tomorrow, hopefully if they deliver in the snow, and we'll see how it goes. But for all you people without hd tvs, if you can't change like me because everything built in, you can still get a HDMI to Scart converter, which is useful.

My ATV was working great (for the 6 months or so I had it ) up until the last software update. Now its stuttering every few minutes as it buffers everything, both from the internet and my home network. Stuff that used to work fine just a few days ago. Incredibly annoying. I've tried resetting, restoring rebooting everything nothing has worked. My samsung LED TV has no post processing going on. I am using an apple extreme router which has worked fine in every way for the past 3 years. The only thing changed was moving the ATV to the latest software 5.2(6010.96) . Now it is useless.

I have pretty much the same problem except in my case I have a first-gen appleTV that has worked perfectly for years. It's my only source of video (other than DVDs) and I have thousands of dollars invested in Tunes movies, TV shows and music. I've always been able to watch them all, both the stuff that's already stored on the appleTV and stuff streamed from my Mac. I use a AirPort Extreme. Nothing -- nothing -- has changed in my setup, just the software update.

A friend was over tonight and we tried to watch a few things but it was pointless. She said, 'well, it's fine if you think of it as a radio show with a picture every now and then!' But then even the sound started skipping.

Most of the tech-y answers on this thread are completely useless to me; I have no idea what you're talking about. ;) And frankly I shouldn't have to. This is Apple. Whatever happened to 'It just works'?

If all the stuff I've bought over the years is suddenly useless I'm going to be mighty ******. Really makes you realize the dangers inherent in going with one, locked-in format.

And sorry I didn't mention this before, but most of the time it works perfectly. I just clicked on the same video that was unwatchable two hours ago because it was stuttering so badly, and now it's fine. Same video. Same home network. Same settings. Same everything. I didn't even restart anything.

If I didn't see it myself I wouldn't believe it either.

What finally made my issue go away was in the last general apple software update (beginning of February) which happened to include an update to the Apple Airport Utility , which woke it out of its stupor to find that I was missing a firmware update. I swear I had checked with the the old utility for this before and it did not find anything.

Once the update was applied and finally after rebooting everything again I am back with a happy Apple TV. I no longer will trust that software updates that affect my router will automatically check that everything is up to date.

I don't know if the same issue might be the case with other routers, but I advise checking.
