I need help getting LG portable super multi drive GP 10 to work with imac

I have just purchased the LG GP10 dvd writer. How does one install the software? The software disc it comes with is for a pc. I am using Lion 10.7 on an imac desktop.

Where does one download software to make it mac compatable. The box the device comes in says it is Mac compatable, but the device only reads discs for playback. I want to burn files onto dvd rom.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

Sense it is Mac compatable and working for playing/reading DVDs & CDs it should also work for burning Discs from OS X without add any software.

I'm not at an iMac a the moment, but somewhere there (I think) in your Applications / Utilities folder there is a utility called Burn Folder. Open a Burn Folder and drag the files that you want into that folder then select Burn, at that point you should be asked to insert a DVD or CD and which burner that you want to use.

I don't have an LG, but have had an external LaCie burner for years. First, there shouldn't be any need for software unless you want to add some burn software (such as Roxio Toast); I use either iDVD (for movies), iTunes (for music), or Toast (for either). You can also use iPhoto (I don't use it so I don't know all its capabilities).

In any case, my burner does not show up on the desktop. However, once I insert a DVD, that icon will show up - that means your Mac knows the burner is available. You have to set the CD & DVD preference pane (System Preferences) to show them on the desktop.

So what kinds of files do you want to burn? If it's just data, follow den.thed's advice - if your DVD is showing on the desktop and it's just files/folders, you should be able to drag those onto the icon as well (or use the burn folder) and burn using Finder and/or Disk Utility. Movies, slideshows - videos of any kind - need encoding/burn software (such as iDVD, iTunes, Toast).

Thank you Den & Babowa for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated. I had difficulty creating the burn folder but eventually was able to find a way to do it. I then dragged and dropped some video files into the burn folder and it worked. I've burned my first DVD with video files to give to a good friend. Awesome - thank you both so much for reponding so promptly.

It actually does work in a regular dvd player. I guess I just got lucky coz I've no idea what or how to ensure video encoding when burning. I'm very much a novice at computers and I've only had the imac for a couple of months so I've got a long way to go and appreciate any assistance. Do you think maybe that the LG GP10 automatically ensures video encoding when burning video files? I wish that a start up menu or something would appear when the device is connected as its supposed to do when connected to a pc, (according to the phamphlet anyway.) Assuming that the burned disc had not worked in a normal dvd machine, what would I have to do to apply video coding?

Well, I must say I'm surprised (and glad for you) that the video works in a DVD player. Normally when you create a movie (from your camera, camcorder, etc) you run it through iMovie to edit. After that you need to use a software that will encode the movie format into one that can be read by a DVD player. There is nothing you can do except have the right software. Here is a good explanation on video encoding (also just google those two words):

My favorite one is iDVD because of the cool themes/menus you can add to your movie to take it from blah to pzazz; Toast is excellent but doesn't have the other iDVD options.

So I can only guess that yours was already encoded...
