Every month I execute Apple hardware test. The last time the following error was given:
4MOT/4/40000003:HD-1258
Apple support could not tell me what this error means. The support technician told me that some error messages are harmless.
I there anybody among the support community who can tell me more about this erro message?

Hi. I would be a little leery of a technician that claimed the Hardware test results are "harmless". While there is no comprensive list of error codes, yours seems to indicate an issue with a fan motor, possibly the Hard Drive fan. You can verify fan operation by downloading, installing and running iStat Pro. The download link is below.

I allready checked all fans and temperatures with iStat Pro. Istat does not indicate any errors regarding fans
and temeratures. But I do recall that there used to be an entrance "HDD" in the list o f temperaturen" which is now not present anymore.
Hi. Most internet searches do point to a fan issue, but there are a few that seem to indicate it may be an issue with the Hard Drive motor. Have you had any issues with general slow downs? Drive Errors?

Sofar I had no issues with general slow downs or drive errors. I have Smartmonitor installed and this application does not reports any errors. Diskutilty also indicates everything is OK. I suppose the best thing to do is bring my iMac to a servicepoint for an extensive test.

A couple of your Fan (Ventilator) speeds seem to be a little off and that is probably what the Apple Hardware Test is reporting.
Generally the default speeds are set to even numbered speeds (1000, 1200, 1300 or 1400 RPM) and this maybe the reason for the 4MOT/4/40000003:HD-1258 if the fan is actually supposed to be at 1300 RPM.
I also see that the CPU fan is at 938 RPM instead of what probably should be 1000 RPM.....
Are you using any third party fan control utilities? If not then you may have a dust, moisture or power problem that is dragging down your HD and CPU fans.
What I would do first.
1. Shutdown and disconnect everything from the iMac.
2. Lay it face down on a soft towel with the stand hanging over the edge of your desk.
3. Next i would inspect and then vigorously vacuum out the air intakes (the bottom grill work and small air intake on the back) to make sure that they a clear and free from any dust accumulation.
4. Stand up, reconnect, startup and re-check your fan speeds again with iStat Pro or iStat Menus.
Now if the Fan speeds are still out of range, then the iMac may need to be internally cleaned and/or serviced.
I followed up your advice and vacuumed the air intakes. This had no effect on the fan speeds. I executed Apple Hardware test again and the error message was the same except the last number, this was 1233 which is exactly the speed of the harddisk fan. So your analysis seems to be right.
