xcode 3.2.6 installation failed?

I'm on OS 10.6.8 on a macbook air and trying to install the xcode 3.2.6 that i downloaded from apple. I have plenty of free disk space. When I run the installer I get the message: The Installation Failed. An unknown installation error has occured. I've tried installing from a new admin user. I'm not sure where to look or how to solve this problem. Any ideas?

Before installing, be sure to quit:

- iTunes

- Xcode

- Interface Builder

- Application Loader

- ...run Activity Monitor and kill iTunes Helper

- download over a wired connection

- confirm sufficient free space

- don't install to any OS over 10.6.8

ran Activity Monitor and killed iTunes Helper, but still failed. Install fails immediately. I have 50GB of free space. If I uncheck the IOS SDK install it gets about 5 minutes into the install and fails. Is there a log somewhere I can check?

I'm on a macbook air with 120GB, so 50GB seems plenty. xcode install takes 10GB

nothing in system profiler, but i checked this log in the terminal

open /var/log/install.log

and found this ... but I'm not sure what to make of it?

I'm confused how this is a good thing, having to reinstall the os? that sounds a lot like what I used to have to do in windows world. Truly it doesn't sound like a solution, only a fix.

Or....

Did you just reinstall ontop of your existing install without problems?

I admit, installing xcode did not go smoothly and was one of my less than estatic experiences with apple products. And it took a lot of time to decipher the problem as the error logs where not very telling. I'm not sure what was wrong. But I did reinstall snow leopard os 10.6 on my Macbook Air, over the existing install (So all my settings, applications, and data was intact, just a clean install of os 10.6 and then I did system update to get to 10.6.8 and xcode installed no problem after that. I've worked in windows and this experience wasn't near the trouble I've had with windows.

I've sadly not been so lucky...

i've reinstalled Snow Leopard, I've made sure none of the Apps above are running, I've tried to run the Terminal uninstall incase there were any old Xcode files on the HDD, but nothing, get the "Installation Failed" message each time I try.

Seriously how can it be this hard to install?

Is there something I'm missing?

It is frustrating to say the least!

Did you look at the logs? There could be some telling info in there.

Also, did you try installing xcode without ios SDK?

I would look at the logs. Then run the command from the terminal to uninstall xcode. then reinstall snow leopard. softer update snow leopard to latest update. I had to run update a couple times. then install xcode with the ios sdk unchecked.

good luck.

I've been trying to install xcode 3.2.6 on snow leopard off and on for a couple of days now. At each attempt I get the message: "The Installation Failed An unknown installation error...". The same message as in this thread.

I first tried downloading a new installation package and got the same results. I then ran the disk utility to check for errors and cleanup permissions - I got the same results. I then reloaded snow leopard and updated it to 10.6.8 - I got the same results.

I don't know where to go next. My macbook is one of the first with an Intel chip (Intel Core Duo) - my understanding is I can't upgrade to Lion so I seem to be stuck with xcode 3.2.6.

Any ideas??

I updated my os to 10.6.8 via the combo update package then I experienced the problem described above.
I checked the software updates and I only selected an update for the software installer.

After a reboot I was able to install Xcode.
I hope this will work for you guys.
