Does Auto brightness actually work???

When I bought my first iPhone (4) I never knew the auto brightness actually works straight away when you walk from a bright area to a darker one, or vice versa. I had an issue with the home button and later my Phone provider swapped a new one for me. This replacement iPhone 4's auto Brightness actually dimmed in lower light areas noticably and in real time. It was really handy and the way it should work.

I recently upgraded to iPhone 4S, and noticed that the auto brightness doesnt change. I checked with my wife's iPhone 4S too and its the same problem.

So, I want to know, does it actually change like the miraculous replacement iPhone 4 I received or is auto brightness a "meh" function that I shouldn't expect it to change. The reason I am asking is because I find in darker rooms, the iPhone is way too bright and I have to keep changing the brightness manually.

Everytime I do this I always see the Auto Brightness funtion on and its starting to bug me that it doesn't work like my old iPhone 4 did. Can someone explain if Auto brightness actually work?

In the meantime, if its really not working you can follow these steps. Go to a dark place in your home, office etc.. Now get the iPhone and go to Settings --> Brightness & Wallpaper. Turn OFF Auto Brightness. Now manualy change the brightness level according to the room light intensity. OK.., Now Turn ON the Auto Brightness again. Done. Now you go outside/direct sun light and see. Auto Brightness bar moves automatically and increase the brightness according to the light intensity. And if you go inside, again Auto Brightness bar moves automatically and dicrease the brightness. Exit now. That's all. Restart not necessary.

Hello everyone

FAST TRANSISTION FROM LIGHT TO DARK STOPS AB WORKING - USE BUTTON ON THE TOP OF PHONE TO SWITCH SCREEN OFF EVERY TIME.......READ ON.......

I have an iphone 4S and here is my solution. I calibrated my Autobrightness (AB) by setting it to the a comfortable level in the daytime by moving the slider half way as I desire. I then switched the phone off and on again. Now for the interesting bit..... I turned the screen off using the button on the top. I covered the ambient light sensor on the front and pressed the 'home' button to turn the screen back on. The phone screen was very dim and indeed the AB slider was near the far left. I then removed my thumb from the sensor and watched the screen get brighter and the slider move by it's self to the centre position where I had set it for that light level. Re-covering the sensor with my thumb did not make the slider move or the brightness reduce but repeating the above with my finger over the sensor and tuning the screen on worked meaning that the brightness would indeed be low if I had turned the screen on in a dark room.

Conclusion: The auto brightness feature seems to adjust at the point of switching on the screen and slowly changes to the changing ambient light thereafter. It will not go from bright to dark when the light in the room has been turned off and this might be by design as your pupils will be adjusted to the bright room and take time to close. The phone may adjust very slowly or not at all from bright to dark.

But there's more...... you will find as I have that to maintain the AB feature you need to use the button on the top of the phone every time you put the device away or close the case. Simply covering the sensor by putting the phone in a case, bag or pocket will confuse the phone and will stop AB working dispite the 'ON' swich on the setup screen. Not great but better than nothing.

Auto brightness has NEVER worked correctly since the very first iPhone. Anyone who claims it has is just plain delusional! Auto brightness is suppose to work when the light the iPhone is in brightens or dims, the screen is suppose to adjust to that automatically...IT NEVER DOES! I've never had the problem on Android phones or Blackberry's, it's always been an Apple issue though.

For some reason they can't seem to make this work correctly, surprisingly for a company who thinks they are so perfect that they can't get something so simple like this feature to work right...
