Mail app shows 3 unread emails when there isn't.

Both the badge on the app icon and the app itself on my 3rd gen iPad says my gmail account has 3 unread emails. I've checked multiple times, and I can find none unread. When I look at the account on both my desktop and my iPhone, they register none unread.

When I delete the account on my iPad, the badge goes away and everything is fine. But when I add that one account back, it reads 3 unread again. Any idea what's going on?

I had this problem as well, go to settings and just turn off mail, do not delete!

open mail, do not go through setting up again. Close mail.

go back to settings turn on mail, open mail.

Make sure you have "unread mailbox" and any unread mail should be in that box.

I Found an old KijjijI alert there...

good luck...

I had the same issue, finally solved it on my own. On my iphone 6 I went to

  1. settings, then
  2. "mail, contacts, calenders"
  3. iCloud and logged in then went back a step
  4. clicked on my company exchange or i'm guessing for a non-work phone its the gmail / aol / etc. client
  5. turned the mail icon to off
  6. then turned the mail icon back on
  7. messages disappeared

I previously tried syncing this with my laptop through a usb as I have MS Outlook on my mac, but dice. After months of annoyance, the above steps finally worked.

I've been having the same exact issue on an iPhone 6 with Outlook for weeks. I was just able to resolve it by opening client on my laptop, marking all emails in my inbox as unread, refresh my phone, then mark all emails read on the client on my laptop and refresh my phone again. Finally the three mysterious unread emails on my phone were all 'read'.
