Why is my ipod touch 4 generation battery dying so fast?

Ok, I recieved a refurbished iPod touch 4 gen from Apple after my previous ipod touch 4 gen had problems with the home button not responding. This "new" ipod works great, but recently I've been having problems with the battery... I downloaded the recent update for fixing numerous things with the ipod touch from Apple... And itworks great again... But I'm curious as to WHY my battery is loosing its charge so fast... I'll be playing ANGRY BIRDS SPACE on my ipod for like 20-30 minutes, with the screen brightness lowest that it could go and on a full charge, then press the home button and the battery is half gone! should I set up a repair with Apple? Or is this normal? I just hate going through the whole process of the repair and then getting an ipod that may not work as good as this one... I do have a lot of memmory on my ipod, its a 32 GB, black, not dropped or scratched, 9.9 Gb is used for: 6 movies, 17 apps, and 67 songs... The apps listed previous DO NOT include the already downloaded apps, such as: Calendar and camara etc... Ohh too i dont have any photos stored on my ipod either. Please respond! Thanks!

Your not alone as I have a referb iPod Touch 32 over a year old and worked very well where it only needed to be charged once a week with iOS version 4.3. Since updateding to iOS v5.xx, the battery needs to be charged between two and five times a day. I have completely shut down all notifications, location services, uneeded software removed, limited video and audio, and screen brightness is tuned to 50% or less...and also Wifi is enabled as I need it. I also noticed with any program I run, the battery power goes from 100% to under 50% and near zero when a game is opened!!!! iOS v4.3 was a seriously better OS than v5.xx

I am sorry. I had typed all of this out and what ever I clicked made it go away. So here I go again. I have an ipod touch 4th generation 8gb. The problem with it is the battery. I bought it mainly to be abble to watch music videos. and listen to music. Fully charged it will only play 4 hours of songs( this is from when I first bought it.). I cannot play music videos at all. I can see the battery juice draining out of it when music videos are playing. I bought an extended warranty from Apple. I have been told they would sent me a new one. But what if it has the same problem?? Also I think the 16 gb has the same problem. And the 32 gb too.I have fybromyalgia. and spend a lot of time resting. Some days it is all I can do to get out of bed. Do you, or anyone else you know what a good solution there might be for this situation?Music is my lifeline to help me. I love music. I would be most grateful for any hope!!! Thank-you so much. If you, or anyone could help with this problem.😢 You can reach me at sher975383@aol.com Thanks again!

Funny, I just replied to a similar question. I have this same problem with my iPod 5th gen. I have been in to see the GENIUS people twice, once at the 1.5 month mark of owning it and again at the 2.5 mark (I bought it new). When they run their diagnostic, however, nothing shows up wrong. It's my fault. Something is wrong in my house. I can read a newspaper for 2 hours and it quits. That is my fault. Nevermind that the Nook, Kindle, laptop, and HP tablet all work fine, it is my fault. The first Genius I saw said they would replace it if it kept having the problem. The second genius patted me on the head, told me I was a good girl, and turned around to another customer (even though I made an appointment.) I have several other problems as well, all documented by the first genius, but the second moron couldn't care less.

Hi claire-bare,

If you have Bluetooth turned on, turn it off until you need it. That should result in a much better battery life. Also, check to make sure you don't have any location services that would be constantly polling to establish your location. It's the stuff that is continually going out to check for things that take up battery life, and turning those things off until you need them can improve it dramatically.

Hi Sherry,

See my post above to claire-bare for some tips on saving your battery. But I also wanted to make one other suggestion for you. Have you considered getting an extra long extension cord charger from Apple? I have my iPad on one, and when I've been using it for several hours (or when I want to watch a video or movie on it), I keep it plugged in. With the extra long cord, there is plenty of slack for me to use it comfortably and move it around without any problems.

Just a thought....

Thanks Gail, for your help. However, I don't have Bluetooth. I never have the location services turned on. When I'm reading I put it in Airplane mode to avoid the constant wi-fi signals. I bought the Gen 4 when it first came out and then the Gen 5 when it hit the stores. I had no problems with the Gen 4. I have several other problems with the Gen 5, but I won't waste your time with them. (Also, it's probably best on the battery if it is not plugged in all the time.) The first Genius documented my problems and actually believed that I was having them. He said he had other people coming in with those issues. The second guy was rudeness personified. Thanks again for the reply, though. Wish I was in Maine now. Go Bar Harbor! :-)

Hi claire-bare,

Here is a link for the Apple phone support folks. I would give calling them a shot - I had better luck with them when I had a problem (back in the day) with my iPad 1 when I first got it. I had taken it down to the Apple Store because it kept getting a "not charging" indicator whenever I tried to charge it. They provided a temporary fix (one that worked for about a day) and then it started up again. Since I am over an hour away from the store, I called the support line, and after some redundant troubleshooting (but necessary for the tech to ensure that things were not right), they sent me a new iPad, a box to return the old one, and a number to call UPS for a pick-up. Really nice guy I worked with and he really worked hard to get things right for me. So, here is the list of worldwide support numbers:

I'm a big Bar Harbor fan too! We live a couple of hours away, but what a beautiful place to go. Not sure you'd want to be here right now....we got snow a couple of days ago. But, things are looking up - snow's now all melted, and spring is definitely around the corner....so maybe in a couple of weeks or so? 😁

Hope you have a good experience with the phone support folks - I think you will....

Cheers,

GB
