Is a 8mp photo taken with my iPhone 4s still 8mp after editing on my iPad with iPhoto for ios? Or is it downsized to 3mp as implied by many reviews. Confused.

Why not try an experiment.take an 8 mp photo from your iPhone and transfer it it your iPad, edit it in iPhoto for iOS then email it to yourself. Check the receiving photo to see what size it is.
At least for me, the original photo taken by Canon 5D Mark II is downsized to 1/4. No idea how to keep the same size.
I guess the OP didn't try the experiment I suggested. I've read the iPhoto for iOS downsizes photos so they are optimized for various social media sites. Supposedly exporting a photo to iTunes will keep the original size. Give that a try.
I tried your experiment.
I tried exporting an edited photo to itunes and it STILL lowers the quality. My iPhone 4s photo with a resolution of 3264x2448 ends up as 2048 × 1536.
To even get the full rez photo on to my iPad I had to email it to myself since Photostream downsizes it anyways, and then it ends up downsized upon export.
VERY dissappointed by this app....
What I've discoved with iPhoto is:
If you 'send' a photo via email or message thru iPhoto, your file size will be reduced. 8mp pic file is large.
If you want to send the pic at full file size, use the default 'Photos' app. It won't downsize the pic.
I use the app PhotoSync to transfer pics between iPhone and iPad. No downsizing occurs.
If you save your iPhoto edits to 'camera roll', it will preserve your edit as well as the original at full size.
I've learned to like iPhoto despite this work around.
The edited photo stays at fullsize and you can export this onto your computer?
Point for me is I do not want my photos downsized after editing on iPad...as per my post and experiment here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3896964 - all I did was auto optimise and went from 2.5 mb to 877k with a visible drop in sharpness on mi iMac screen
I haven't use the Auto Optimize function in iPhoto for iOS. But Optimizing in PhotoShop reduces the color information and the deduced the file size (not the pixel dimensions though). I wonder if the Auto Optimize function in iPhoto for iOS also discards color information to reduce file size?
Could be...photos that were only straightened were also reduced in size, but less of a reduction. But the examples I have were smaller to start with, going from 1.4 mb down to 1.3 mb.
