MacBook Air 13" KEYBOARD AND TRACKPAD FAILURE

Hi. I purchased a close out 13 inch MacBook Air from Tekserve in NYC for a friend in Europe, and she is reporting serious issues with her keyboard and trackpad (i.e. neither of them works). She has tried rebooting a number of times. The specs of the machine are as follows. 13.3"/ 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/ 2GB/ 128 GB Flash. I am looking to know if anyone has had this issue and if they know how to solve it. I am not sure which OS she is using, but the laptop was purchased Feb 2012 so I am imaging LION. I have not yet UG'ed to Lion so I am not aware of any issues myself. Thank you so much in advance. Alex

This is not likely to be an issue with the OS version - if the keyboard and trackpad are both inoverative, there isn't a setting or system property in Lion that could cause it.

I would try an SMC reset - it's detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US but the procedure for a macBook Air is:

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note
: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

If that doesn't help, and given the lack of responsiveness from the keyboard it may not, and assuming the laptop was bought through an authorised Apple reseller, the warraty should be valid and is worldwide, so it should be possible to have it examined by Apple or an Approved Service Provider in her area.

Hi

I have the exact same problem with my MacBook Air Model NoA1304. My keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive.

I tried SMC, I tried reseting NVRAM but with no luck. The weird thing is that my trackpad and keyboard do work when I enter the Apple Hardware Test or in the Startup Manager.

But when my OS boots or when I go into Safe Mode they are unresponsive.

Has anyone found the solution to this?

P.S.: Sorry for my bad English.

Was experiencing the same problems as some of the above.

Was in the process of pulling my hair out (the little I have left)... Booted several times. Tried the the SMC and all the other jazz. I even went to the Apple store to no avail.

In an act of desperation I booted, got the login screen and mouse/trackpad and keyboard stopped responding. I simply just closed the lid/folded the macbook and opened it again and BOOM, There it was in all it's glory... A fully functional mouse/trackpad and keyboard.

Now It's time for some serious back-up routines and a re-install.

Hi! I have a 2009 macbook air (1,6ghz c2d, 2 gb ram, 120gb ssd). The trackpad is not working. When i turn the system on, goes perfectly. i tried intel based smc reset, but it did not solve my problem. it doesn't recognize any usb hadvers, except for the magsafe adapter (the battery can be charged). The shift+ctrl+alt+ power button combination works, it shuts down immediately. When I try the smc reset i hear the ssd (or the cpu) sound, I took it to an Apple service, they sad that the whole topcase needs to be removed, (they also tried a sotware update before they said that, but it didn't work) i will try a battery removal. i'm sure it's a hardware problem but i don't think the only option is the topcase removal. I would be grateful if you could give me advices.

Update: I've been having this issue since the Yosemite upgrade, never under Maverick, the system of installation @ purchase in June 2014. Please I hope Apple is monitoring the forums for this and the WiFi issues under Yosemite. I seem to notice I have it more after prolonged Magic mouse use, my tool of preference with my 13' MBA. Lastly, recovery after closing the cover without shutdown, an option I simply think great with a MB, and that never gave me issues (never) under Maverick, works once out of three times under Yosemite. Has anyone else been having these three repetitive issues? And has anyone talked or received feedback from Apple on them? I'm hoping with the new upcoming system I can enjoy my fairly new MBA as I had prior to Yosemite. I'm a newbie Apple /Mac fan, and this has soured my wanting to use a Mac or any Apple product (similar downgrade in performance in my iPad 2 with iOS upgrades).

Does anyone know, but has Apple reformed how they develop or there PLC (product lifecycle process)? Speed, Agile, hiring talent/experienced developers, etc., anything that may be affecting what obviously is less quality in their OS's and products? I'd be looking at this closely now from an overall macro to micro perspective if I was top Apple management. They might want to do like Domino's and really hear and respond quickly (ok, Domino's did poorly on the respond quickly part) to these major quality issues.

Any way, thanks for the temp fix of a reset, which is a pain to remember as a new MBA owner, especially if you can't access the net @ the time when the trackpad stops working.
