How do I repair java?

Java appears to be broken on my machine as a particular web app works on other machines but not on mine. How do I delete and re-install java?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

yeah its strange.. i've tried every java installed/removal i can. I've run all my updated and then the combind updated. I've installed jave from oracle, both the developer and the normal versions. I've installed java from the apple downloads as well. Aslo removed the preferences as well.

Its really strange, I had this problem last year as well with lion.. it just started working after some updates.

Hopefully it will work again.

With Java enabled and selected in Safari, if you go to this test site, is Java working?

If it is...

Java only fails on one site that I use, but I can access it using another account on my machine

Some web page functions are done with javascript, which is not java, and I'm wondering if in the other account where it works you have javascript enabled, and this account it is disabled, whether through selection in the browser preferences, or through some browser plugin.

I was finally able to solve this problem on my machine. I used the OSX 10.7 installer, and I reinstalled the OS right on top of my running system. I was prepared for all kinds of grief, but I was shocked to find that nothing seemed to mess up. All my accounts and settings were retained, and the only consequence was that I was able to install and run Java. It's been well behaved for months. To be clear (if I wasn't), it's the whole OS I reinstalled, not just Java. No guarantees, but if you decide to try it, I hope your luck is as good as mine.
