I have a similar problem. None of my app thats require Java work. I also can't load the Java preferences. when i open the preferences nothing happens. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall Java many times, tried to remove the java preferences (plists) and also logged in with another account. still nothing.
any iades
thanx
No ideas. No one seems to know how to fix this.
Java only fails on one site that I use, but I can access it using another account on my machine.
yeah its strange.. i've tried every java installed/removal i can. I've run all my updated and then the combind updated. I've installed jave from oracle, both the developer and the normal versions. I've installed java from the apple downloads as well. Aslo removed the preferences as well.
Its really strange, I had this problem last year as well with lion.. it just started working after some updates.
Hopefully it will work again.
With Java enabled and selected in Safari, if you go to this test site, is Java working?

If it is...

Some web page functions are done with javascript, which is not java, and I'm wondering if in the other account where it works you have javascript enabled, and this account it is disabled, whether through selection in the browser preferences, or through some browser plugin.
Toby,
remove macintoshHD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin file. Restart your computer and java preferences will load normally and you will be able to activate applet.
:-)
Thanx for the help.. but i still have no java. I'm sure the problem is more then just an applet issue. Nothing with Java on my system works. even the java preferences in my utilities. If I open up apps with java, they don't do anything. I just see the icon in my doc and the title of the app in my doc, but no window or anything.
I was finally able to solve this problem on my machine. I used the OSX 10.7 installer, and I reinstalled the OS right on top of my running system. I was prepared for all kinds of grief, but I was shocked to find that nothing seemed to mess up. All my accounts and settings were retained, and the only consequence was that I was able to install and run Java. It's been well behaved for months. To be clear (if I wasn't), it's the whole OS I reinstalled, not just Java. No guarantees, but if you decide to try it, I hope your luck is as good as mine.

been thinking about doing this.. thanks for sharing your fix. I'm going to try this.
i finally did the install. My Java is up and running, and it was so easy and painless. just ran the os x install from my inside my os x. took 30 minutes to install and now my java is working again.
my java is broken again. this is so strange.
My mac was working fine for about 3 days, even after i did all the updates. Then this afternoon all of a sudden I couldn't use jdownloader which is a java app.
But there seems to be a deeper issue now as well.. my safari wont even load any web pages. I have to use firefox.
