Anyone else having "Noise" problems with iRig/Garageband/iPad "3"?

I've been using iRig/Garageband on an iPad 2 for almost a year now and it works well enough for my needs.

I've recently got an iPad3 but the noise levels are way over what I get with the iPad2. Any form of distortion pre-set seems to generate a massive amount of background noise. The only way I can lessen it is to be brutal with the noise gate to the point wher ethe sustain/delay level is hacked back to almost nothing.

I think it's a Garageband problem because when I use the Amplitude software I get no appreciable noise at all.

Anyone else finding this? Perhaps I should try re-installing Garageband on the iPad3?

Any suggestions, similar experiences?

(I know the iRig isn't exactly 'state of the art' but I'm not comparing it to, say, Apogee Jam. I'm comparing Gargeband on the iPad2 with Garageband on the iPad3 using iRig)

i also wanted to make sure everybody understands that it is in no way a problem with the iRig. i have a griffin calble that i found at target on clearance, and it has the same issue with garageband. i think anything u plug into the headphone jack is not gonna work with GB. i am trying to figure out how to roll back to GB 1.2 cuz 1.3-1.4 has the problem. before the last two updates it worked fine on ipad3...

Ok, I've been following this discussion, partly unwillingly (I get this notification in my e-mail whenever someone posts a new reply to this thread, argh...). Anyway: I too was happy with the I-rig at first, then came the infamous update, and everything went to ****. I was moaning and complaining, then I got sick of that, and bought an apogee-jam. Problem solved, and the some. Even before the I-rig got messed up, the sound I got from I-rig could never compare to apogee-jam. With apogee I got perfect, absolutely perfect, clean tone, both with the clean-amps and the metal-amps (my favorite amp in garageband is punk rock, although I absolutely don't play punk rock, ha ha). I know the apogee-jam is a bit more expensive, but just bye it, and you won't regret it for a second, I swear.

Yes, I assume the iRig Stomp would suffer from the same issues with Garageband, but with AmpliTube would work fine. Also the iRig HD is really cool because you'll also be able to use it with your Macbook or iMac as a guitar/audio interface for recording on the go and at home in your studio. Plus the whole Made in Italy in the same city as Lamorgini and Ferrari is great testament to our quality standards.

Hmm...if it's a "Noise" problem, I'm not sure. However, if it's a "feedback" problem with a high-pitched squeal then I might know the cause of the problem.

On the iRig device, it looks like both the guitar signal and the headphone/speaker output are going through the same wire to the computer/iDevice. My guess is, because of physics, increasing the volume of the headphones or increasing "gain"/"output" on the amp will cause the electromagnetic waves coming out of the headphones/speaker port on iRig to interfere with the guitar input signal going into iRig...and this create a feedback loop electromagnetically within the wires.

So options for the fix if using headphones:

1) reduce headphone volume on computer/iDevice until the feedback is gone.

2) or reduce gain/output/master on the amp within garageband

Best option for computer speaker:

- move the computer volume to around 30-40% and control the loudness through your Speaker system rather than through the computer/iDevice.

The trick is to find the balance between computer volume, amp gain, amp output, and amp master volume.

Hope this helps!

Yes, I ended up with an Apogee Jam as well. Solved the problem in a stroke.

(anyone want to buy an iRig?)

I'm still convinced the problem is down to Apple when they "upgraded" GB but at the end of the day no acceptable (to me) solution ever came up so rather than struggle through I just bought the Jam.

I still prefer the Amplitube software over the Jam stuff (horrible clunky loops) but I'm sorted now, no thanks to Apple on this.

I'm pretty annoyed too.

iRig simply doesn't work with distorted patches.

I first tried iPad 2/iRig/Garageband and I have and unnaceptable level of feedback. In some brutal tones noise itself its louder than guitar sound.

Jamup XT has the same problem. People thing it gets solved but its and illusion. Try to pull of the noise gate effect, you'll see a mad feedback exactly equal as GB. The only thing is that in Jamup XT the noise gate is so well implemented that you don't notice the noise.

But that's not all. I recently tried MacBook Pro. Guess? Not only GB has the same feedback issues. Logic and MainStage has the same problems. Nine Inch Nails use this live? I can't believe. Just they don't use iRig right?

I can't find the point. I understand that you can't expect pro sound with iRig. But it should be working at least. You CAN'T use distortion at all.

I think I'll try a brand new soundboard and conect to MBPro via USB. Bye to all that ad-hoc guitar mobile devices conectors. That's been enough.

Hi, bit of an old thread but I just had a serious squelling noise problem using JampUp, which was odd, as it was fine the other day. (I'm using the cheap-o tiger guitar input that plugs in through the headphone jack, so thought maybe it had kicked the bucket after just a week) Dug around a bit online for a solution to no avail then suddenly thought to check the output settings in jamup - it was set to speaker, when I changed it back to headphone problem solved straight away (even though output was only coming through headphones anyway)

Might help someone else out there with a similar issue!

I know this is a rather old thread but in case any else has the same issue, I thought I'd add my 2 cents. I recently purchased an iRig and had similar feedback/static issues coming from both the iPhone and iPad. For me what was causing the noise was the Bluetooth being enabled. While I'm playing I turn off Bluetooth (and WiFi also just in case) and reduces the noise to almost nothing. Hope that helps.

I am also having these horrible screeches. I have used GB Many times before and never had these problems, even with irig. today i made the 125.00 dollar investment to purchase the full amplitube and to my surprise, it was filled with high pitched noises and impossible to play. I then tried alplitube using GB and same issue. Obviously something is taking place in the input here on the ipad. Im going to buy the apogee jam tomorrow. Everyone says it works very well. Let's see!

All I use either of these for is to play live to backing tracks. Occasionally record. ***** I paid 125 now I have to spend another 125

Let you know how it works out tomorrow! 🙂

UPDATE! I purchased the IRIG HD using the 30 pin connector and problem was corrected!! Costs 110.00 to fix it but works good. Small tip for every one. Went to guitar center to purchase the apogee Jam. Cost was 129.00 and the IRIG HD was 99.00. The only problem is (BE CAREFUL!) The connectors are not included with apogee jam. Had to pay another 29.00 for the 30 pin connector. The IRIG HD had all the connectors needed for the 99.00.

I was able to connect the 30 pin connector without issue and all worked well. The hd is 64 bit and essentially the same.

CASE CLOSED!
