My iPad 3 says 3G but data stops working

I recently bought a new new iPad in Singapore and it does not work as I had hoped.

I take it to work and put it on my desk next to my iPhone. They both say at least 1 bar of reception, they both say 3G. Data works on both of them - web pages load fast, emails come, app store works. This is not WiFi, this is 3G cellular data.

I don't know the exact timings but an hour or so later, I turn the screen on on the iPad. Still says at least 1 bar, still says 3G. However no data works. No websites, no app store, no emails, I check my iPhone sitting next to it. Data still works on that.

To make the iPad have data again, I have to turn it off (slide to turn off) and turn it on again. Then data works for a bit.

I have to do this pretty much every time I have left my iPad for a while (30 mins plus?) and want to use it.

Singtel, the telecom provider have reset my line and also replaced the iPad's microsim card. They say that that is all they can do. However since there changes, the symptoms remain.

Apple have said that this is a telecoms problem, not an Apple problem.

I am a little disappointed and I hope this can be resolved.

Lots of similar threads on this one and your own experiences mirror mine exactly. I'm pretty sure there's a bug in the OS; report it as such and get it the attention it deserves.

Just made an interesting discovery while restoring. When restoring as a "new IPad" the "forget this network" option disappeared under the Wifi network options. In addition to this my IPad no longer reconnects to my private wi-fi network when I deactivate/activate wifi. Everytime I return back home I have to choose to connect to my network+ I need to rewrite my password. Brilliant, my New IPad just keeps on disappointing. I am seriously considering going back to IPad 2.

I had did whatever possible to my best computer understand, still the same disappointing results I'm getting. The only I didn't do was, dismantle my "new iPad" for an mod or overhaul.

Didn't go for that as I do not want to void it warranty so that I can still sell it off at good price and buy myself an Android tablet for good. I love my old iPad2 so much that I'd choosed to ignore all it shortcoming and I didn't even care to join this forum. Not the same story for my "New iPad". New? Ha.

I have a new iPad 64Gb 3G (4G I suppose but not in UK) and upgraded from iPad 2. I used the same sim card from Orange and put in the new iPad - which is sim free. I am having huge problems with 3G in the UK. I have been to Orange and they replaced the sim - no fix and I have been to Apple store where they replaced the iPad for a new one saying that there was possibly a problem with the 3G circuitry (although they didn't test it they just changed it no questions asked) - no fix.

Addtionally I have phoned Orange who went through various things on the phone - resetting network settings, changing APN, resetting iPad etc. All of these things didn't work for more than a minute, The one thing that has worked most successfully is choosing carrier manually from Orange to T-Mobile. But again this only works for a while and causes problems every time you lose a signal by stopping everything and telling you that the signal is lost (even if you are on Wifi)

STILL having the same problem says I have Orange 3G with 4 bars but will not connect to internet or if it does it connects at super slow speed - 3 minutes it took to load Google page.

I have the same issue in Switzerland with my iPad 3 even if using differen SIMs, carriers and regions.

A recent trip to France while roaming on different carriers also provided me with regular cellular drops even when WiFi was turned-off.

So it is for sure an Apple iPad 3 issue be it HW or SW.

Amazing that Apple doesn't give the attention and communication to this issue it requires.

Same here,

I live in the UK and am now on a second "New iPad" with an unstable 3G connection. It tells me I am connected to T-Mobile via 3G with plenty of reception but I cannot access any internet sites, internet enabled apps, etc. I keep getting a box telling me that it can't activate cellular connection.

In order to regain a 3G connection I have to either: Power down the iPad, take out the sim card, reset network settings, and even, dare I say it, Restore to factory settings! Now, having to do this several times a day is more than an inconvenience. I have even gone to the trouble of getting a replacement sim card from T-Mobile just to factor out the possibility of it being a problem. Which I managed to swap yesterday. 3G was ok up until 30 minutes ago and; HEY PRESTO! the problem is back again!

The iPad works absolutely fine over wifi with lightning fast connection. But the 3G is, well non-existant.

What's going on?

So, as I stated before I am also one of the "lucky" ones in the US that has this problem; but something interesting happened when I open iTunes and connected the iPad to it. By the way, I am using Verizon. A message just pop up stating that an update to the carrier settings for your iPad is available and if I want to download it now! Has anyone in the US using AT&T or Verizon got this message? I downloaded it and I guess on Monday I will find out if this helps or not. I will be out of the "home" area and using the extended 3G where I'm going. I will let you guys know if this really solve the problem.
