My iPad 3 says 3G but data stops working

I recently bought a new new iPad in Singapore and it does not work as I had hoped.

I take it to work and put it on my desk next to my iPhone. They both say at least 1 bar of reception, they both say 3G. Data works on both of them - web pages load fast, emails come, app store works. This is not WiFi, this is 3G cellular data.

I don't know the exact timings but an hour or so later, I turn the screen on on the iPad. Still says at least 1 bar, still says 3G. However no data works. No websites, no app store, no emails, I check my iPhone sitting next to it. Data still works on that.

To make the iPad have data again, I have to turn it off (slide to turn off) and turn it on again. Then data works for a bit.

I have to do this pretty much every time I have left my iPad for a while (30 mins plus?) and want to use it.

Singtel, the telecom provider have reset my line and also replaced the iPad's microsim card. They say that that is all they can do. However since there changes, the symptoms remain.

Apple have said that this is a telecoms problem, not an Apple problem.

I am a little disappointed and I hope this can be resolved.

Lots of similar threads on this one and your own experiences mirror mine exactly. I'm pretty sure there's a bug in the OS; report it as such and get it the attention it deserves.

On another thread, a member called AntonUK posted the following solution. It's worked for me and several other people in the UK on T-mobile and O2. I have no idea why it works, but it certainly seems to.

The fix is:

1. Go to settings > mobile data > SIM PIN

2. Turn on using default PIN for your carrier (see below)

3. Choose "Change PIN" re-enter the default PIN and the change it to one of your choice (that you can remember) and save it.

Default PINs are:

O2, GiffGaff, Tesco Mobile: 5555 (O2 can also be 0000 or 1234)

T-mobile: 1210

Vodafone: 0000

Orange: 1111

Virgin: 7890

That seems to work for many, hopefully it will work for you too.

Good luck and credit Anton if it works for you.

Leaving the SIM PIN on seems not to affect the operation of the iPad at all, it never prompts you for the pin or anything, however it does seem to resolve the issue, so I'm guessing it's some kind of security problem.

Please reply if this fix works for you in order to help others...

Hi Guys,

There may be a problem on an earlier version of the New iPad. It has been reported by another user that his friend has purchased a new iPad and his/her serial number starts with DLXF and apparently there is no 3g problem!

I like many others have this 3g problem and mine starts with DLXH

Please reply with which ipad you have along with the first part of your serial number and if you are experincing this problem or not.

Hopefully were getting closer to an answer!

Mine is also DLXH. Tried the PIN trick - did not work for me.

I am testing now different possibility. On some polish forum I found information that iPads working in one of four polish carriers (it is called Play) do not have this issue. Other three carriers T-Mobile, Orange and Plus - people with iPads on those carriers have this issue. I have it with carrier Plus. So today I bought Play sim card and testing. I will let you know about the result.

Actually I've managed to have my iPad 3 working all day with cellular data and wifi, but not at the same time.

I don't know if I've just been lucky or if it'll continue to work, I can keep you posted about this.

BTW: I (still) live in Denmark with no 4G, and have a DLXH serial.

But what I've done is a combination of ideas earlier mentioned:

1: I disabled the SIM pin code

2: I disabled Wifi

3: I disabled cellular data

4: Shut down the iPad

5: Turned on the iPad

6: Enabled cellular data

It's been working all day. I've been switching between cellular data and wifi to test it out. When I do I do it like this:

7: Disable cellular data

8: Wait for around 10 seconds

9: Enable Wifi

When I change from wifi to cellular I do the same but of course in reverse order:

10: Disable wifi

11: Wait for around 10 seconds

12: Enable cellular data

If this "fix" is really a fix, it seems like what it solves is really a software issue with the implementation of iOS 5.1 on the new iPad (perhaps something in regard to the management of the new 4G hardware), Apple should be able to fix that with the next update.

As mentioned I'll keep you posted, but so far it's bee a joyful iPad day! :-)

Same problem with 3G data/ wifi. This is a 64GB ipad3 on orange in UK. Please can someone at apple look into this as clearly it's endemic from reading these posts and for a product which isn't cheap and boasts its data capabilities this really needs to be fixed. Given many of us don't visit these forums often (unless we have to for a problem like this), it would be nice if apple could email us an update/ time scale on fixing this issue. Many thanks.
