Q: macbook air screen goes black

Hey.  I bought a new MacBook Air 13" on December 20, 2011.  I do like it a lot, but I have one big problem (its big to me!) and question -- about 3 times per week since purchasing the MacBook Air while working / typing on the MacBook Air, the screen just goes black fir NO apparent reason!!  It is like the battery is suddenly totally OUT of any power!  But, the battery has plenty of charge, and no command or other key stroke nor any other activity that should cause this black screen has been done.

NOTE: It seems to happen while I am in M.S. Word for Mac.  It stays black for about 3 to 5 seconds, and then comes back on.  No file is lost.  My work is all still there, and it comes back on like nothing ever happened.  But it is not NORMAL and I have never had this happen like this with any other computer I have had --MAc or Wndows.

Anyone have any ideas what causes thus?  Thankd ahead of time for your time and help.  BLT

Well, I started this thread and after Apple's replacing my Air twice, I gave up and forked up the extra money and got a MacBook Retina Display. I just got tired of going to the Apple store. If you decide to do that, however, I'd suggest you deal with your local store. I tried the online route and I got much better service in person. You'll get credit for the Applecare as well, if you have it. I can't believe they still haven't fixed this problem. I'd really like to have an 11" Air, it was exactly the right size for me with my traveling so much.

I had the same issues and got my laptop replaced several times. As a last try i stopped using Google Chrome and this solved the issue. Not using Chrome results in a perfectly fine working MacBook Air for me

I have purchased 2 macbook airs in 2011 for my office. No problem with either of these ever. Then I bought one in August 2013. It has intermittent blackout problems similar to yours. I noticed that some people say it happens on Chrome. I never use Chrome, only Safari.

I've just been putting up with it. Now I think I'll take it in to Apple. Gr-r-r-r-r. Seriously, we don't pay Apple prices to have these issues.

I just bought a macbook air for college and I'm having the exact same problem, I sometimes click the "esc" button and wait a few seconds and it'll restart in no matter of time.. anyways, I've never had this problem with my macbook pro which I've had for years

Well, I have a Mac Book Pro and it worked great for the first three years. Then last year it started to black out. I have tried everything, I mean everything, and it always black out after watching any vid, or working with graphics, or even just typing. It has being a real nightmare. I gather, I am gonna have to give up on Apple. Very sad, but this really ruins it for many of us and many things and the only option is Linux, cause windows is another real mess.

I'm having the same problem and I understand where you are coming from with the whole magnet thing, but if that's the case, why do they sell macbook air cases at the Apple Store with magnetic closures?.... Why are they selling me something that ruins my computer?

This is crazy, I replaced by 2006 Mac with the macbook Air. It goes black and I was surprised to see how many of you are experiencing the same thing. I will take it to the apple store now. I may decide to replace it since it will most likely not be fixed.

Mac store quickly solved my problem - I had to reinstall operating system and hardware, but it never happened again.  Considering how many of these computers are sold, the number of people having problems is not significant.  it can probably be fixed.  I love my macbok.

Thanks! Had this problem on my MBA. It was an ID magnet about 4" away from the screen!

Did anyone that is experiencing the problem did a restore from another Mac? I am experiencing the same problem, never had this happen before on any of my Mac's, but it started with this new Air 2014, and this is the only one I have actually used the "Restore from other Mac" option...

    Thanks

i had the same problem with my Mac Air and after searching here, i realised that i have a case snugg and it has a magnetic flap close and i use my computer on it, that magnet somehow activates i think sleep mode on my mac then screen goes black and when i tilt the screen or move the computer around it comes back. So i would suggest check if you have any magnetic case or something magnetic under the mac.
