Black screen on ipad 2?

So, I too got the black screen of death as it has been referred to. I tried to reset, did a restore and still black. I took it to the Apple store where they told me that for $250 they could fix it for me. Seriously, $250 to fix a device that is only 10 months old. (My first one had touch screen issues so they replaced it with a new one but the warrantee on the device begins from the original date of purchase, not the actual age of the device.) I was (and still am) extremely frustrated with the response from the Apple store. I have several Apple products and have not had the problems with any of them that I have had with the i-pad. Anyway, I decided to try the drop fix technique and it worked! The black screen of death has been defeated...for the moment.

I read in the book of warranty and it says its a year... so why the 250 dlls?.. I hope that this problem doesnt show again in my ipad, if its a year warranty, APPLE do youfix this problem? What does this problem mean?

My current ipad is one they replaced due to touch screen issues. Even though the device itself is only 10 months old, the team member at the Apple store said that the warranty begins on the original date of purchase, not the age of the device. He also proceeded to tell me that I should have bought the extended warranty and then I wouldn't have any problems. I find it totally unacceptable that Apple doesn't stand behind its product. I think a $600 device should last longer than 10 months.

Black screen in my ipad 2. Apple said they could "swap it out" ie- new ipad for $250. I tried the dropping method after leaving it sit in my desk for 6 weeks (no $ to get another one). Viola! It works again!!!! Genious!

? though- if it's fixable by dropping, is there a loose connection or something that could potentially be fixed?

I don't usually post anything on these discussion boards but this actually worked for me. I was a bit too gentle to start with but then I slapped it onto the arm of the sofa which is quite hard and it worked. This was after my eight year old confessed that he had been playing on an 'interactive' game and had banged the iPad on his knee before it went blank. Anyway, it works - fantastic and thanks! 🙂

You are amazing! Every time I fly and go through airport security I get the black & blue screen of death. I tried the hard reset and last time I tried to do a full system restore. However...this time, I couldn't as I have a passcode on the iPad and it wouldn't restore without entering it on the screen...and I couldn't as I couldn't see the screen. So...removed from the case and thought...can't hurt...dropped it onto the carpeted floor in my office and...VOILA! Icons. 🙂 girl!

My iPad 2 just did the same thing. Could not turn the screen on, it was working 10 minutes earlier.

So I found this forum but I didn't dropped the iPad, I took it and hit it against the wall and suddenly the screen came back to live!

Like many others, tried everything...resetting...restoring but no I still had the black screen of death.

Made my appointment for the Genius Bar but thought oh well lets give the thumping of the iPad a go.

Whack! A couple of hits on the arm of the couch and voilà...one working IPad!!!!

Who would have thought? Well chuffed.

I tried ALL of the conventional methods to fix my ipad, except taking it in. I had nothing else to lose so I tried dropping it AND IT WORKED!!!! It sounds crazy, but this TOTALLY fixed my ipad!!! Thanks!

Amazing..... As I read the recommendation, I thought to myself how dumb does that sound. Why would I add more damage to the IPAD by dropping it on the floor. Then I read your post and decided it was safer to just slap my hand on the back of the IPAD. I only slapped it twice and it instantly went back on. I was shocked!!!! Thank You Thank You Thank You. I had an scheduled appointment to Apple for this afternoon and I am sure they would have charged @ $ 250.00 for a problem that they may have just fixed themselves for slapping the IPAD. You just saved me $260.00 or a new iPad. I just went to the Apple store today and they quickly said it was the display and to repair it would be $260.00. I had lost all hope and then read this forum. I did what you said and dropped it gently on the counter and it absolutely worked!! It took a few times and I thought there was no way it would work. But it did! Thank you!

I thought it was stupid too. Guess what, its really work!! I just slightly bang the edge of my ipad on the carpeted floor and then the whole screen reappear. Lucky is that i saw your post before bringing it to service center.

this worked for me as well! amazing. took a few slaps and drops but it eventually worked. thanks for the suggestion. at first, it displayed a glitch but i was able to input my passcode. dropped it and slapped it some more and it looked normal again. happy camper here

After having my daughter's iPad dead with black screen (just few green flashes when it goes on) for couple months, now it is back again!!!!

Hurray! Now my daughter will jump to the ceiling… me too

It seems scary and risky to try slapе and drop the device in purpose.

But as most of you know already: It works….

I started first with few slaps on the back side of the iPad, …. Nothing happened.

But once I hit the frame of the iPad in the middle between down left corner and dock connector… boom.

It turns that was my lucky strike.

Let hope it is gonna last long.

My screen is a bit different then what I have read on here, I hope that someone out there can help me. My screen is going from a lit black then to the apple icon then goes completely black, but it never shuts down or turns off just keeps flashing to those screens by it self. I have tried to reset this to smacking it and also dropping it, which I was scared to do, but I did it and still the same nothing happened for me.

I am so upset because I use this for everything and alot of info is stored on here.

Mine is about a yr. and a half old and I cant afford to take this in to apple.

any suggestions would be SO appreciated.
