itunes music store doesn't work since itunes update

I know this question has already been raised, but I'm following Dave's suggestion about starting a new thread - plus I want to underscore the number of people with this problem! Since I downloaded the new iTunes, when I try to connect to the music store the progress bar goes about halfway and then just sits there 'connecting' eternally. Really hard to imagine why we'd all suddenly be having this problem if it isn't due to a bug with the new version of iTunes.

I discovered the solution for this. I run Norton Security, and discovered that I had to manually change the Norton Firewall to permit i-tunes to access to the internet. If you're running Norton Security, open it up, click on Firewall, then click on Configure, then click on Programs on the bar at the top, scroll down through your programs to i-tunes and change to permit.

I think "Dave Sawyer" tried to advise this, but like many techies he seems to have forgotten to study communication in school.

I am not an Apple employee nor do I use a pseudonym. I'm just a fellow user trying to help out. There may be problems with the iTMS that are causing some people problems, but based on my experience, a large percentage of problems connecting are caused by firewalls, privacy filters, or ISP issues. Most experienced users here try to eliminate those possibilities before we start blaming Apple.

I notice that in your post below that you found that it was Norton that was causing your problem, so it would seem that it wasn't something that Apple needed to fix after all. As to my purported "communication problem", I've been trying to step Nora through the possibilities one at a time. At no time have I been addressing your issue, so if I didn't "communicate" well with you, I'm sorry, but you've threadjacked Nora's thread for your issue, so you shouldn't be surprised that you didn't get clear communication.

Glad you found the problem. Now can we get back to Nora's issue, please, and stop threadjacking? Thanks and regards.

To respond to the point raised below, I don't have Norton, so that's not it. And I've installed other iTunes updates, so it's not just that. Our IT guy has not been around, so I haven't been able to follow up with Dave's suggestions. Not sure when I'll be able to pursue this, unfortunately, 'cause I'm going to be out for a bit, but thank you for the suggestions and hopefully I'll figure it out eventually.

Dave: None of these suggestions worked for me. After updating to 6.0.3.5, I can't access the Music Store. My system, (XP-Pro SP2) hasn't changed. My ISP and network settings haven't changed in months. Turning Norton off doesn't help.

I tried to cut and past the various URL's in these posts but that doesn't help - I get the following error from my browser" Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. Not implemented (-2147467263)"

I give up.

Try the following:

  • Refresh page: Search for the page again by clicking the Refresh button. The timeout may have occurred due to Internet congestion.
  • Check spelling: Check that you typed the Web page address correctly. The address may have been mistyped.
  • Access from a link: If there is a link to the page you are looking for, try accessing the page from that link.

Katrina S-THANK YOU for your comments about the possibility of the upgrade being viewed as a "new install". I went into Norton/Internet Security/Personal Firewall/Programs and found Apple iTunes "Blocked All". I changed to "Permit All" and we're back in the Music Store. AND I an NOT a computer person. You're a champ!

I have had the same problem as many others with no success trying:

Changing my firewall settings. I have windows firewall and iTunes is clicked as an exception.

Trying to directly connect with links posted in this forum.

Turned off my firewall.

So, I can't think of anything more to do. If I click iTMS it freezes the entire program and I have to right click and "end program now".
I cannot access anything like podcasts, videos, etc,.

Is there a link to DL the old version of iTunes that worked just great.

Thanks.
