On the website there are no concrete instructions how to clean the exterior of a Macbook Pro. I was wondering wether I should use some different solvent or solution to clean the MBP or just plain water and soap.

Im in the process of buying my first ever Mac - the 13" MBP, but I think what they're saying with a "damp lint-free cloth" is one of the microfiber type cloths. Just dampen that, not overly soaking it and wipe down with that and use another dry one to wipe it off afterwards. I use this method on my 50" HDTV screen and it works great, plus Im a smoker, so you can only imagine how grimy my screen could get. Hope this helps.
I've given you Apple's "official" statement. The key thing to keep in mind is that you do not want any water or soap entering any port or opening on your MacBook Pro.

But how does a damp solvent free cloth clean smudges and stuff on the exterior? 😕
When I wash my cloths I use some detergent don't I? It just doesn't make sense
I use a unscented, alcohol free baby wipes... they are not recommended, but if you're careful and dry the case immediately with a lint free cloth, in my experience, it works great...
Alcohol wipes are ok, because the alcohol evaporates quickly water and soap just gets absorbed, damaging components.
